Description

LAURENCE E. FRENCH, 0F SEBASTOPOL, CALIFORNIA.
PRIMING-DEVICE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed. October 12, 1917,` Serial No. 196,141.
To all whom t may concern.' y
Be it known that I, LAURENCE E. FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sebastopol, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Priming- Device Attachments, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to priming devices for internal combustion engines and it is the dominant object of the invention to provide a priming device having novel operating means whereby the cut-off means therefor can be actuated by foot or by hand for admitting the passage of a priming Huid to the engine cylinders. i
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide means for allowing the cut-off means to be maintained in open position subsequent to the starting of the engine, thereby permitting the cylinders of the same to be brought to proper working temperatures.
Other independent objectsare to provide features of construction of portions of the attachment which tend toward the attainment of the above aims irrespective of the relation in which they are used.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein-Y after set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown one of various possible embodiments of my invention I have illustrated a vertical section through a motor driven vehicle dashthe said straps carrying a fuel tank i therein. Connected to the fluid outlet port of the fuel tank 2 is a conduit 5, the free end of which extends to a point in proximity of the dashboard D. v
lSecured to the rear side of the dashboard D by means of bolts 6 is a bracket 7 having a screw threaded opening formed therein for receiving a complementally screw threaded portion of a rotary valve casing 8. Rotatably mounted in the casing 8 is a valve 9 having a lever 10 fixedly mounted on one extremity thereof and provided with a plurality of openings, the purpose of which will be subsequently apparent. A second conduit 11 extends from the valve casing 8 into engagement with the cylinders of the internal combustion engine E.
.Passing vthrough a suitable slot or way formed in the lower portion of the dashboard D is a tubular casing member 12, this casing member being supported 4upon a plate 13 arranged over the said slot and secured to the dashboard by means of screws 14 or other suitable fastening devices. A plunger rod 15 is slidably arranged in the tubular body 12 and has the inner end of the same pivotally connected to the lever 10 by means of a suitable connection passing through one of the openings formed therein, while the remaining end of the plunger rod is notched as at 16 and provided with a head 17. Screw threaded guide caps 18 are turned into engagement with complementally threaded portions formed on the tubular body 12 and slidably receive the plunger rod 15 therethrough. As will be noted, the plunger rod 15 when moved inwardly to its full extent will have the notch 16 formed therein engaged with the adjacent portion of the outer cap 18, thus, serving as means for maintaining the plunger rod in its innermost position against the tension of an expansible coil spring 19 arranged about a portion of the same within the tubular body 12.
To permit operation of the cut-off means or valve from the front of the machine when cranking the same manually, a wire 20 or suitable connection is passed through the remaining opening formed in the lever 10 and extends through the mesh of the radiator construction of the vehicle to a point slightly beyond the same, whereupon it is looped to facilitate engagement therewith.
It is to be noted, that thel fuel tank 4 ismounted above the level of the valve and as a. consequence, the flow of combustible fuel therefrom into the various cylinders of the engine E is permitted.
When operating the priming` device from the operators seat of the vehicle by foot, the head 17 of the plunger rod 16 is engaged by the foot of user and moves inwardly against the tension of the spring until the notched portion 16 engages over the adjacent portion of the guide cap 18. Vhen in this position, the lever 10 will have been moved to full open position thereby admitting the passage of fuel from the tank 4 to the cylinders of the engine E and effectively priming the same to facilitate starting thereof. When the engine has run for the desired period and the cylinders have been brought to proper working temperatures, the head 17 may be moved slightly upwardly by the toe of the foot of the operator, thus disengaging the notched portion 16 from the guide cap 18 and permitting the eXpansible spring 19 to return the plunger rod to its normal or closed position, thus discontinuing the passage of fuel from the fuel tank to the engine cylinders. When the car is cranked from the front thereof, the valve may be operated by the wire 20. By pullin the wire forwardly the lever 10 will be roc ed in a direction to open the valve and also will move the plunger rod 15 inwardly whereupon the notched portion 16 will engage with the adjacent portion of the guide cap 18, thus maintaining the valve in its open position until the engine has run for a suiicient time in order that the cylinders of the same may be brought to the proper temperatures. At this time, the plunger rod 15 may be disengaged by moving the head 17 slightly upwardly to dis- Iii engage the notched portion 16 from the Y guide cap 18.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
