FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919..
Application filed December 8', 1917. Serial No. 206,331.
invented an Improvement in Fasteners, of
which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, 1s a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in fasteners, and more particularly, though notexclusively, to improvements in separable fasteners for autombile curtains wherein the stud is adapted to be attached to the curtain and the socket to be carried in a recess in the automobile body, the exterior pre- Fig. 3 is a sectlon on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. p
In the illustrative embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, I have provided the stud 4 attached to the curtain 5 of an automobile, and projecting inwardly therefrom for engagement with a socket 6 fastened in the side of the car 7 preferably by screw-threads 8, as shown. The stud 4 is preferably provided with grooves 6 and 7 one of which is preferably adapted to engage with a preferably annular resilient jaw 9 in the front of the socket 6, and the other of which is adapted to engage with a second resilient jaw element 10 located near the back of the socket. I The stud 6 may be attached to the curtain 5 in any suitable way, but I prefer to attach it by the, screwthreaded stud 11 passing through thecurtain and adapted to engage a knob or button 12 exterior to the curtain. The head 13 of the stud 4 is preferably rounded on the edges so that when the stud is to be entered in the socket, the annular jaw 9 will i by the groove be forced outwardly so that it can pass over the stud 4.
Similarly, the interior shoulder of the groove 7' is preferably rounded so that, as the stud is entered in the socket, the passage of the groove 7 of the stud past the aw 9 will not prevent the full entrance of the stud in the socket. -When the stud is completely entered in the socket, as shown,
,the jaw 9 rests in the groove 6 and the second resilient jaw element 10 is entered in the groove 7 so that, if pressure is exerted outwardly on the curtain in any non-axial direction theresilient jaw element 10 will firmly press a ainst the shoulder provided and head 13, thus preventing accidental withdrawal of the stud from p the socket. When, on the other hand, the stud is directly withdrawn from the socket, the head 13 can pass through the resilient jaw 10 by expansion of the ring 10. If the stud is for any reason accidentally partially withdrawn from the socket, the spring jaw 9 will engage the groove 7 thus providing one form of double locking means, or means "for yieldingly holding the stud and socket in a plurality of determined positions.
The preferred form of stud and socket provides plural independent jaw means engaging the stud, which not only increase the strength of the resilient attachment of the stud to the socket, but also provide 00- actin resilient fulcrum elements opposing exten ed withdrawal of the stud from the socket by force exerted in any non-axial direction.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that changes involving omission, substitution, alteration and reversal of parts, and even changes in the mode of operation, may be made without departing from the scope of my inven tion, which is best defined inthe following claims.
Claims:
1. A separable fastener comprising, in combination, a stud providing two grooves spaced longitudinally thereof, and a'tubular socket adapted to receive said stud and having interiorly thereof two grooves spaced to til correspond to the grooves of the stud, two of said grooves retaining annular spring portions for engagement with oppositely disposed grooves.
2. A separable fastener comprising, in combination, a stud providing two grooves spaced longitudinally thereof, and a tubular socket adapted to receive said stud and having' interiorly thereof two grooves spaced to correspond to the grooves of the stud, two 10 of said grooves in said socket retaining annular spring portions for engagement with oppositely disposed grooves in said stud.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
