FRED S. OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TD CARR FASTENER GQMPANY, 0F CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATIDN OF MAINE SEPARABLE rnsrnnen.
sooeta.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I," FRED S. CARR, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, in the county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, (whose post-office address is care of Carr Fastener Company, Cambridge, Massachusetts,) have in I on the drawings representing'like parts.
This invention pertains to separable fasteners, and particularly, though notexclusively, to stud and socket fasteners separable by relative tipping movement in one direction only.
In the drawings, which show a preferred form of my invention i Figure 1 is a front elevation of one embodiment ofmy'inven-tion;
Fig. 2 is a section, partly in elevation, on
. the llne 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, partly-in section,'on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and I .Fig. 4 is a section, partly in elevation, on the line H of Fig. 2.
In the preferred illustrative embodiment of my invention shownin the drawings, I have provided a stud 5 having a head 6 and a neck 7, a preferably abrupt shoulder 8 being provided between the head 6 and neck 7 The stud 5 is shown secured to acurtain .9 by prongs 10 passing through thecurtain and clenched over a plate 11 in the usual manner. Cooperating with the stud 5 I provide a socket preferably,asshow'n, carried on the inner side of a curtain and secured thereto by a tubular projection 12 from the socket proper expanded or rolled over a face plate 13. The socket proper preferably comprises a front plate 14 from which the tubular, extension 12 may be died forwardly, a back plate 15, which, as shown, preferably 00- operates with the front plate 14; to provlde a casing for yielding jaw means herein typified by the jaw 16 below the stud and urged toward the stud by a spring 17. The casing also preferably provides a fixed jaw 18 adapted to engage the neck of the stud opposite the yielding jaw 16. The yieldingv jaw 16 is preferably beveled or inclined at that portion thereof engaging the stud, so that when the bottom-portions of the stud Specification of Letters Patent.

and socket are moved apart as by a pull to the left on the curtain 12 below the socket, the shoulder on the stud will engage the sloping surface on the yielding jaw 16, cans ing it to be forced downwardly against the pressure of the spring 17, thereby'pelinitting the stud, 'on continuation of the relative tipping movement, to be disengaged from the 'fiXed jaw 18, and to be entirely withdrawn from the socket; r
The fixed jaw is preferably, as shown, formed by pressing forwardly a portion of the back plate 1 15, and the tubular projection from the plate 14: isprefera'bly formed to provide an extended bearing surface for the head of the stud. The back plate 15 may be provided with a lip 19 providing an eX- tended bearing surface for the shank of the stud.
While I have shown and described a pre-- ferred form of one embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that major changes involving omission, substitution, al-.
teration and reversal of parts, and even changesin the mode of' operation, may be made wlthout departing from the scope of my invention, which is. best defined in the combination, a stud having a headand a neck, a socket for engagement with said stud and providing a yielding aw having a sloping surface for engagement with theshoulder on said stud behind the head thereof, said jaw and said shoulder being relatively proportioned so that the sloping por tion only of the jaw engages said shoulder.
2. A separable fastener comprising, in combination, a stud having head and a neck, a socket for engagement with said stud and providing a yielding aw having a slop ing surface for engagement with the lower shoulder on said stud behind the head thereof, said jaw and said shoulder being relatively proportioned so that the sloping portion only of the jaw engages said shoulder.
3. A separable fastener comprising, in combination, a stud having a head and a neck providing an abrupt shoulder between them, a socket for engagement with said stud and providing a yielding jaw having a sloping surface for engagement with the shoulder on said stud behind the h d h of, said jaw and said shoulder being relatively proportioned so that the sloping portion only oi? the jaw engages said shoulder.
4. A separable fastener con'lprising, in combination, a stud having a head and a. neck; a socket for engagement with said stud. and providing a fixed jaw above said stud and a. yielding" jaw below said stud, said stud having an abrupt shoulder between said 10 head and neck, and said yielding jaw having a sloping portion engaging said shout.
prising a front plate, a back plate, a studl engaging rigid jaw projecting forwardly from said back plate and a yielding jaw between said plates.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
