The invention relates tocar roofs of that `type in which the carlines are arranged above the roong sheets and form the `supports and weather proofing caps therefor. The present invention has particular reference to various features of construction as vhereinafter set forth.

This lug has a portion eX- tending inward to overlap and rest upon the block K, and consequently the load upon the carline is largely transmitted through the lug L to the block K. The block K in addition to the securing ofthe bolts L is preferably riveted'to the flanges I, as indicated at M, so that the load carried into the block from the lug L is in turn carried into the flange I of the member I and from the latter into the top of the plate J.
The lug L in addition to its mechanical Y' function as a support performs the further function of an additional weather-proofing means for stopping the channel of the carline and preventing the krain from beating upward into the portion overlying the car. A further weather-proofing is effected by a hashing plate N, which has a flange N overlapping the siding O of the car body and "also having a depressed panel N2 which passes between the block M and the liange I,being bent inward at its upper end to partially overlap the rounded corner of the member I. Thus any water that may find access to the channel of the carline through the joint between the same and the roofing sheets will be directed by said sheets beyond the flashing yN and by the latter' will be conducted outside of the car.
During operation the roofing sheets will be moved relative to each other and to the carlines to compensate for weaving stresses in the car frame. This causes more or less abrasion at the points of contact .with the carline flanges, particularly where cinders are driven into the joint, and thus there is danger of destroying the weather-proofing coating of the sheets so that they will rust. I have avoided vthis defect by placing a nonmetallic bearing, preferably formed of felt, between the flanges ofthe carlines and the sheets, the material extending over the nested flanges D, as indicated at P. This member therefore forms additional weatherproofing as well as a non-metallic bearing.
The running-board saddle may be attached directly to the carline, as the latter is above the roofing sheets.' Inasmuch, however, as the carline is of arch forni it is necessary eitherto form the saddle of a similar curvature or to provide other means for the proper bearing. This I have accomplished by forming a saddle of folded sheet metal comprising top portion Q with the returnbent flanges Q and downturned flanges Q2 which embrace the sides of the carline. The top portion Q extends in the same plane from end to end of the carline, but at the center of the ends there is 'a depressed p0rtion R, as shown in Fig. 6, curved to fit the cross section of the carline and sufficiently depressed to support the ends of the saddle when its center is resting upon the arch. The returnbent flanges are provided with a suitable number of apertures S for the engagement of securing bolts for the ruiming boards, and the saddle itself is secured to the carline by suitable means, such as rivets Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a'car roof, the combination with a carline of inverted channel section and having a downturned end portion overlapping the eaves, of a lug securedk within the channel of the downturned portion and projecting inward beyond the same, and a niember supported on the plate of the car forming a seat for said lug.
2. In a car roof, the combination with a carline of inverted channel cross section having a downturned end portion for overlapping the teaves, of aV lug secured Within the channel of the downturned portion and projecting inward therefrom, a member resting upon thel side plate of the car and projecting downward on the outer face thereof,

In a car roof, the combination with a carline of inverted channel section having laterally-extending 'flanges and provided with a downturned end portion of similar lsection overlapping the eaves of the car, of a metallic angle member having one flange thereof resting upon the side plate of the car and a downturned flange lying adjacent to the outer face of said side plate; a member secured to said downturned flange forming a spacer between the same and the flanges of the downturned. portion of the carline, securing bolts for the carline passing through the downturned flanges thereof, the spacer and the side plate of the same, and a lug secured within, the channel of the downturned portion of the carline projecting inward therefrom and resting upon said spacer.
5. The combination. with a wooden side plate, of a carline of inverted-U cross section having laterally-extending Hanges provided with a downturned end portion overlapping said side plate, a metallic angle member having oneliange resting on said side plate and a downturned flange adjacent to the outer face thereof, a member secured to said downturned flange forming a spacer between the same and the flanges of the downturned' portion of said carline, bolts passing through the downturned flanges of the carline, said spacer, metallic angle member and the side plate, and a lug fitting within the channel of the downturned portion 'of the carline and secured thereto, said lug projecting inward and resting upon said downturned portion of said carline, bolts the sides of said metallic angle plate, and passing through the downturned flanges of a flashing secured between the downturned the carline, said spacer, metallic anglememflange of said angle plate and said spacer 10 ber and the side plate, a lug secured within and bent outward to overlap said car siding 5 the channel of the carline and projecting inbeneath and at the sides thereof.
