IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-REELS.

Specification describing an Improved Harvester-Beel, invented by JOSEPH A. SHEP- HARD, of Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto, Ohio.

In my improved device the reel is mounted in a permanent bearing at the upper end of a telescopic standard, and is raised or lowered by adjusting said standard as to length by means of a forked lever. The proper tension of the band is maintained by the automatic adjustment of intermediate pulleys, by means of a curved bar pivoted concentrically with the reel-shaft, and riding over a stud on the stationary part of the standard.

Figure 1 is a side or end elevation of a harvester-reel, and ashoe supporting the same, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, partly in vertical section.

A represents the inner shoe of a harvester, and B a sector-bracket mounted thereon to pivot the standard and adjust the same as to inclination. O represents a telescopic standard, composed of a tubular trunk, z, and a single slide, 9 within the same. 1 1 arevertical slots in the sides of the said trunk z, and 2 2 pins projecting from .the slide 3 through the same. 1) represents a hand-lever with fork to engage with the said pins 2, and E a'bracket bolted onto the trunk z of the standard 0 to fulcrum the said lever, the same being constructed with a sector-rack, w, for the engage ment of a dog, w, pivoted to one side of said lever, and operated through a rod, v, and finger-lever, u, to hold the hand-lever in different positions. F represents a stud-shaft, projecting from the lower end of the trunk z of the standards 0, and G a pair of pulleys or a double pulley thereon. H represents the reel, Ithe shaft thereof, J its pulley, and K its bearing, bolted to the upper end of the slide y of the standard. By shifting the hand-lever D, the slide y of the standard 0 is raised or lowered to elevate or depress the reel, as required. At the same time the curved rod M is slid over the stud N, and the pulleys t t carried laterally in either direction, as required, to keep the band 0 taut. On releasing the hand-lever, the gravity of the finger-lever u and dog 10 causes the latter to engagewith the sector-rack :12, which looks the parts in position.

In Fig. 1 the parts are shown in two positions by full and dotted lines.-

The telescopic standardO will be seen to furnish the requisite extensible support for the reel in the most compact and simple shape; while the rod M and stud N, with little friction, which may be reduced by friction-roller, if desired, and without projection, adjust the intermediate pulleys t and keep the band 0 properly taut, the band itself keeping the same in contact.

The reel H, brackets B E, and lever D, and the pulleys G, J, and t, and their shafts or bearin gs, may be of any preferredconstruction. The rod M may also be otherwise pivoted concentrically with the reel-shaft. j

What I claim in this my invention is- 1. The described combination of thecurved rod M, pivoted concentrically with the reelshaft, and the stud N, for adjusting the band-' tautening pulleys t.

2. The combination .of the telescopic standard O, composed of stationary trunk z and slide y, the reel-shaft bearing K on the said slide, the curved rod M pivoted on said bearing, and the stud N projecting from the trunk z, for the purposes set forth.
