Be it known that I, CLYDE C. MALooMB, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rivesville, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lath-Mill Bolters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as wood sawing,"and more particularly has reference to a lath mill bolter.
It is the primary aim and object of the present invention to provide a machine of the character described wherein an improved return roller feed is operatively connected to the saw carrying shaft so as to operate in the same direction as the saw and facilitate the return of a slab subsequent to the severing thereof from the main block, thus serving as a labor saver.
More particularly, this invention includes the provision of improved motion transmitting means between the saw carrying shaft and the: roller carrying shaft for insuring of the proper operation of the return roller.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a deviceoof the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low, and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more tion to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and where in is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is 'to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the arious parts.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
[Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a table indicated in its entirety by the numeral 1 and consisting'of a rectangular frame 2 supported at the respective corners by legs 3 which are in turn braced through the instrumentality of cross bars 4, the ends of which are tenoned in the legs while suitable stay rods 5 serve to increase the rigidity of the legs and the braces. A plate 6 serves as a top and .is hinged as at 7 to one side edge of the frame and terminates approximately medially of the frame. Extending longitudinally across the frame in closely spaced parallel relation to the top 6 is a cross bar 8 while mounted on one side of the frame and medially thereof is a bearing 9 in which is journaled one end of a shaft 10 the opposite end of which is journaled medially of the cross bar 8 while carried on the extreme inner projecting end of the shaft 10 and bearing between the bar 8 and the top 6 is a circular saw 11. A pulley wheel 12 is carried by theshaft 10 while operating there'about is a motion transmitting belt 13 for insuring of the rotation of the shaft 10.
In order to insure of the proper feeding of timber to the saw 11 a worm 14 is formed on the outer projecting end of the shaft 10 while meshing therewith is a worm gear 15 which is carried by one end of a shaft 16. This shaft is journaled in laterally extending journal brackets 17 on the adjacent side bar of the frame 2 and carries a bevel gear 18 on its opposite end. The bevel gear 18 meshes with another bevel gear v19 carried by the transversely extending shaft 20, the respective ends of which are journaled in be 2. carr e y intermeshing gears 17 and 18 respectively on the shaft 16 and 20, it is apparent that the feed roller 23 will rotate in an opposlte direction to the saw 11 so as to insure of the timber being, properly fed to the'saw.
A spreader 24 is mounted on the top 6 in proximity to the saw and serves to deflect the slabs as they are being severed to prevent them from binding againstthe saw.
As intimated, improved. meanshave been provided for facilitating the returning-of thecut slabs rearwardly over the top. In reducing this feature of the invention to practice laterally extending journal brackets 25 are mounted on the front piece of the frame while journaled therein is a shaft 26 on one portion of which is mounted a return feed roller'27, the upper surface of which roller is positioned slightly below the upper surfaceof the top 6, so as not to interfere with the cutting of slabs from the main piece of timber.
"In order to rotate the roller 27in th same direction asthe saw 11 a bevel gear 28 is carriedby one end of the shaft 26 and meshes with another bevel gear 29 carried by one-end of the shaft 30. Y The shaft 30 is journaled in laterally extending bearing brackets 31 on the side pieceof the frame. A worm gear 32 is mounted on the opposite end of the shaft 30 and meshes with the under surface of the worm 14 so that rotary motion will be transmitted from the shaft 10 to the shaft let, and by reason of the bevel gears 28 and 29011 the shafts 26 and 30 the shaft '26 will be rotated in the same direction-as the saw 11 so that thereturn roller will in effect act as a booster for the slabs after they have been severed and facilitate the return of the slabs. V
In use, when the main piece of timber (not shown) is being carried toward the saw by the roller 23 aslab (not shown) will be removed therefrom. During the forward movement of the timber the slab. will be passed over theretu-rn roller 27 'and about the time that it is unbalanced and severed from the main piece of timber an attendant engages the outer projecting end to prevent the slab from falling from the table. The return roller 27 now acts as a booster to facilitate' the returning of the slab rearwardly over the top or table 6. t
Itis believed inview of the foregoing description that a "further: detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is thought that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described this invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
l. A machine of the character described including a table, a shaft rotatably mounted therein, a saw carried by one end of the shaft means for rotating the shaft, a serrated feed roller rotatably mounted in the table and operably connected to the shaft so as to rotate toward the saw, and a return feed roller rotatably mounted on the table in the rear of the saw and operably connected to the shaft so as to rotate in the same direction as the saw to facilitate the return of the slabs after the severing thereof.
2. A machine of the character described including atable embodyinga frame, supporting legs connected thereto, and a top swingingly connected to the frame'formed near one edge with a slot, a cross bar on the frame and 7 arranged in spaced relation to one side edgeofthe top, a shaft rotatably mounted on the frame, a saw carried by one end of the shaft and operating between the cross bar and the top, means for rotating the shaft, aworm' formed on the outer end of the shaft, another shaft journaled in the frame, a serrated feed roller carried by one projecting end of the last shaft and operating in the slot in the top, a motion transmitting shaft, a worm gear on one end of the motion transmitting shaftand meshing with the worm on the saw carrying shaft, means for operably connecting the roller carrying shaft and the motion transmitting shaft so as to 'insureo-f the rotation ofthe roller in a direction toward the saw, and a feed roller rotatably mounted at the other end of the frame and having its upper edge positioned slightly below the top and operably connected to the saw carrying shaft so as to rotate in the same direction as the saw to facilitate the returning the slabs after severing thereof.
3. A machine of the character described including a table embodying a frame, supporting legs connected thereto, a top swingingly connected to the frame and formed near one edge with'a slot, a cross bar on the frame and arranged in spaced relation to one side edge of the top, a shaftrotatably' mounted on the frame, a saw carried byone end of theshaft and operating between the cross bar and the top, means for rotating the shaft, a worm formed on the outer end of the shaft,
another shaft journaled in the frame, a serrated feed roller carried by one projecting endof the last shaft and operating in the slot in the top, a motion; transmitting shaft,
