EDGAR SAMEIi LYONS, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO THE MCCASKEY REGISTER COMPANY, (INCORPOBATED IN 1914,) 013 ALLIANCE, CHIC, A CORPORATION Specification of Letters Patent.
FILING APPLIANCE.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed Match 26, 1918. Seral No. 224,898.
T0 all wh0m z't may concem:
Be it known that I, EDGAR S. LYONS, a British subject, residing at Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Appliances, of Which the followmg is a specification.
The invention relates to a filing appliance for sales.bills and other similar papers,in which a plurality of bill holders are operatively mounted upon a suitable base for swinging separately or collectively into upright or reclined position for giving access to the filing faces of the holders; and the object of the improvement is to mount and operate such a series of holders upon a base or within a case having substanmally the same depth from front to rear as the corre- Sponding depth of the holders when 1n upright position, so that the apphance as a whole can be'placed and operated upon a c0mparatively narrow shelf or the correspondingly narrow portion of a counter, withont protruding in front 'thereof when the appliance is not in use.
This general object of the 1mprovement 1s attained by providing swinging and sliding pair of links or arms pivoted at one end to the sides of the sW1ng ing end of the foremost holder, and beingin sliding engagement at the other end With the sides of the case so that the forward edge of the case Will stop the links or arms in substantially horizontal position.
A preferred embodiment of the invention thus set forth in general terms, is illustrated forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a front or face elevatmn of the improved filing appliance show1ng the holders in normal upright position;
Fig. 2, an elevation section of the same on line 22, Fig. 1;
Fig; 3, a similar section showmg the supporting means and several of the holders swung forward into reclmed pos7 t on;
Fig. a, a detached perspectwe v1ew of the supporting means for one side of the appliance; and
Fig. 5, a fragmentary sectional view of the slide guide and roller.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The filin appliance preferably comprises a series of olders 1 normally arranged in upr1ght position with their lower ends connected by hinges 2 and having the forward side of the foremost leaf l supported by the p1vot pin or pintle 3 upon bearing brackets 4 monnted at or near the forward edge of the base 5 of the rear wall 6 and side walls 7 forming the case of theappliance.
Abutment rollers 8 are preferably mounted upon brackets 9 secured to the side walls of the case against which rollers the rearmust holder is adapted to bear and operate in a Well known manner, as the foremost leaves are swung to and from reclined position; and the base 5 of the appliance is pref erably provided with means, as the clips 10 and the bolts 11 located near the rear of the base, for securing the same to the shelf or counter 12 at or near the forward edge thereof, so that the appliance as a whole Will not be tilted forward when the leaves are swung "and supported in reclined position as illustrated and described herein.
Supporting arms 13 are provided, preferably one at each side of the holders, which supporting arms are pivoted at one end to the free end of the foremost holder 1, and are provided at the other end with a sliding engagement with the sides of the case along or adjacent to the base thereof.
The pivotal connection for the swinging ends of the supporting arms, may comprise the pivot bar 14 extending from one arm to the other and being journaled in the free end of the foremost leaf; and the sliding engagement for the other ends of the supporting arms, may be by means of the rollers or runners 15, pivoted to the ends of the arms operating in the fiattened C-shaped channels 16 secured to the side walls of the case as by means of the L-brackets 17 located in the angles formed by the side Walls 7 and the base 5 of the case, Which channels form guideways in Which the slide rolls are adapted to slide forward and rearward.
The parts are so proportioned and arranged that When the forernost holder is in normal uprightposition, the slide rollers or 'of the supporting arms, are automaticaliy carried forward and downward therewith, until thelower sides or edges thereof intermediate their ends impinge the forward edge 18 of the base in which operation the rollers or runnersslide forward in the guideways to apoint Within the f0rward endsthereof; and it;is evident that the bearing furnished by the forWard edge of the baseserves to stop the arms 13 in substantially horizontal position for supporting the foremost leaf in reciined position, as shoWn in Fig. 3, which foremos't holder thus beeomes a table for supporting the other holders of the, series Which 'may be swung forward and superp0sed in recliued Position upon it; and it is also evident that when the foremost holder is swung upward into upright position, the supporting arms Will be automaticaliy carried into upright position alongside the holders, and that the rOllers or runners on their rear ends W111 slide rearward in the gnideways.
1. A filing appliance including a base havillg guideways and pivotal bearings, a series of swingiDg holders ha ving the foremost holder pivoted on the bearings, and arms at the sides of the holders having-their foremost ends pivoted to the free end of the foremost holder and the rear ends in sliding Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. c.
,end With the base adapted to bear inter mediate their nds upon the base for supporting the holders in reclined position,
3. A filing appliance including a base, a series. of normally upright holders niounted on the base for swinging to and from reclined position, and 'means operatively connecting one of the holders and the base adapted to bear upon the base intermediat its connections for supporting the holders in reclined position, said means' having pivotal connection With the one and sliding engagement with the parts.
4. A filing appliance including a base, a series of normally upright holders monnted on the base for swinging to and from reclined Position, and means operatively Connectixig one of the holders and the base adaptdto bear upon the base intermediate its connectionsfor supporting the holders in reclined position, said means having pivotal connection with the one and guiding engagement With the other ofthe connected parts.
