FILING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 10, 1916. Serial No.114,156.
To all whom t may concern.'
I Be it known that I, HARRY J. HIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an appliance for filing sales-bills and other similar papers composed of a series of hinged holders, and a case in which the holders are operatively mounted and in which they can be completely inclosed for protection against lire and like damage; and the improvement contemplates the use of a case or cabinet for the hinged holders, in the form of an ordinary upright lireproofsafe in which the front wall may be composed of one or more laterally swinging doors. i
One obJect of the invention is to utillze the available receiving .chamber within the case or cabinet with a single set or series of hinged holders-for filing the maximum number of bills therein; and in carrying out this object the foremost holder is pivotally mounted on a rockin support upon the forward end of a movab e carriage with a counterbalance arm ends of the rearmost holder, and an Oscillating follower frame is also mounted upon the carriage for supporting the rearmost holder in upright position. v
The object of the invention, and other ancillary advantages, are attained by the` construction, arrangement and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a yvertical section of the case with the door opened and broken away, showing, in side elevation, the Vseries of hinged bill holders in normal `upright position within the case, and showing the track table and its leg section swung upward within thek door opening in front of the holders; f
Fig. 2, a similar section of the case with the bill holders moved ,forward into operative position, showing in full lines. the normal upright position of the holders, and showing, in broken lines, the reclined position thereof;

Fig. 8, a fragmentary perspective view showing one of the supporting rollers on the follower frame. y
'Similar' numerals refer. to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The case 1 of the ling appliance may he made of any well known lireproof construe-s tion, with spaced wall plates and intervening heat resisting material, and is preferably closed in front by the laterally swingingy doors` 2 in accordance with well known safe` construction, so that the case can be opened.
in front the entire height and width of its.
receiving chamber 3.
The track table l is hinged at 5 to the bottom of the case inside the doors'Q, and is adapted to be swung into upright position within the doors, as shown in Fig. 1, or to be swung into reclined position to form a .table for the bill holders 6, when the same are drawn forward into operative position, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 2l.v v
The leg section 4a of the table is preferably hinged to the lowerl portion thereof, and is adapted to be folded under` the same when in reclined position; and this section is provided with the brackets 7 forming supporting legs for the table when in reclined position; which legs are adapted to protrude within the receivingl chamber 'of Vthe, case fragmentary vertical section,
when the table 4 and its leg section la are both rotated upward on-tlie hinges, as shown inFigl..l 'i
Trac-k bars 8 and 8a, in theform of plates secured on edge, are provided, one o'n each side of the bottom ofthe case, and one'on Aplates 10, the @rear endsv of which are,A .con-
nected by the yoke plate 11, and the forward ends of which are connected by the cross bar 12 which forms a handle by which the carriage can be moved by the operator.
` The interval between the forward ends of the track bars 8 and the rear ends of the track bars 8, when the track table is swung downward into reolined position, are preferably bridged by the links 13 mounted on the pins 13"1 and 13b on the inner sidesV 'of 'the respective track bars; upon which links the flanges 9b of the Carriage wheels'ar'e adapted to travel across said interval. f And the cross baig rl is preferably' provided at die free end of the track table, which 'serves as a handle for swingihg thesaine, and also serves as a Y support roi the bil-l holders Awlieii- 1reliiied iipoii the table, as shown iii Fig. 3.'
The rear pair of wheels 9 are journaledon pih'tle's 15 seoured direetly to the side plates ro of the carriage nadie, but the forward pair of carriage wheels 9a, are journaled on pitles- 16 ekten'ding laterally from the rearwardly extending link plates 17 which 4are formed oh the ends "of thetransverse floating bar 18 l'obated under the forward end of the carriage frame. i l
The forward ends 4of each link plate 17 is provided with the hearing aperture 19, the forward 'eh'd's of eleaeh carriage side lplate 10 is provided with thfe hearing aperture 2Q, and the hinged end of the foremost bill liold'erf1 is p'royided with the bearing Iapert'ieel; byiiiaiis of which bearing apert"ure"`s,l'these areall 'piyotlally mounted upii thetiaiisifie "e pivot iod 22 extending tranlsfeisely through the 'saine,wh1'cli pivot rod` is provided with suitable 'cotter `p'i'ns` y23, washer-"s 24 and spaoing thimbles 25, 'for latersecuring and 4spacing the parts pi'voted thereon. g *e The 'normal lower endsQof the 'bill holders '6 are eonnleoted together by hinges 26, and when the holders are all rotated into upright pol' sitio'n, seine 'of the reainios't holders 'rest upon and are supported by the rearwardly ,',",'---vv 1 .7.17, A3 i' extendmg counterbalance arms -27 as shown in Fig. 1, which are rigidly secured at their forwaidvends to the transverse iloating bar 1 8; and it is evident that the link plates/17, tlie floating bar 18, and the eounterbaiance arnis 27,r vconstitute arocking frame for sup-V portiiig thebillholders By this construotion and arrangement it i'sfevide'nt that .the weight of thtebill holders 6 `is Carried primarily upon the pivot'rod 22 l Y whieh bears the foremost holder, and upon Vto the forward endsof the link plate 17 on the endsof the floating bars 18; and that 'this weight is ultinfa'tely borne by the forward set of carriage wheels 9a which are mounted ori the pintles 1 6 whiohharerjournaled in the the foremost holder upon the pivot rod 22, which is located in front of the axis of the forward wheels 9a of the carriage, tends to depress the forward endo/fthe carriage and forward ends ofthe link plates 17, excepting only as `same is counterbalanced by the weight of the rearxnost holders when resting upon the eounterbalance arms 27, which extend a greater distance in rear of the axis of the forward wheels 9 than the pivot rod 22 is locatedin front thereof.
For the sion of the forward end of theroeking frame when a 4"Cl'Siderfdbl llllllb'Of tll' fODSt holders are rotated into reclined position, as showii in Fig. 3f, the Vstop 'post 28 is 'provided on theside plates 10 frame at a point intermediate the li'iXisof the forward carriage wheels and the 'pivot bar 22, which posts iinpin'ge the 'upper edges ofthe link plates 17 land stop "a further depression ofthe floating bar 18 'when a `suilicient number of holders 6 have been rotated into 'i'ecliiied position to raise the hinged ends of the rearinost holders from bearing' upon tie couiiterbalaiiee arms 27, `as shown iii Fig. e.
The parts are so 'proportioned and arranged that the stop 'posts 28 will prei'fent a further depression of the floating bar 18, thereby stopping a further elevation of the rear ends of the oont'erbalance ari'ns 27 -'when something less than half of the foreinto play unless and yuntil more vthan half of the bill holders have been rotated into Iu'piight position, after which 'uis weight 'of the rearinost holders is 'carried by ythe 'counterbalance arms to such anjextent that they will not Cause a slamming of 'the foremost leaves when they are started upward 'from recline'd position.
A follower frame for supporting the reari'nost holder in upright position is composed of the side bars 29 which are kconnected together at the rear 'ends by the yoke bar 29, and the side bars of this frame are pivotally mounted on each side to the pair of 'upright parallel links 30 and 30, the lower ends of the rear links being pi'voted directly to the side plates 10 of the carriage frame, and the lower ends of the forward links being pivoted v on the pin'tl'es 16 of 'the forward carriage wheels 9a.
A guide plate 3 1 is secured to and depends from 'e'aoh side bar of the follower freine, in fwhich plate is provided the vupright slot 32 in which the guide postfS- protri'idingfroi'n the hinged end of the rearn'iost holder 6b operates to oscillate the follower' frame forwardand `rrear'ward vasthe foremost bill holders are rotated 'to and from reolin'ed position. Y suits-breeders si are pirated at of the carriage purpose ofstop'ping the depres- Y the receiving chamber of the case,
counterbalance arms the inner side of the rear end of cach side bar 29 of the follower frame, against which rollers the rearmost frame rests and slides upward and downward during the operation of the foremost holders.
The lower end of the guide slot 32 is preferably inclined rearward and may be formed on a curve substantially concentric with the pivot rod 22 of the foremost holder, so that the follower frame is not moved forward very far until after quite a number of the foremost holders have been rotated into reclined position.
The bill holders are normally located in upright position upon the carriage within as shown in Fig. 1. For use of the appliance in filing or removing bills from the holders, track table 4 and its legsection 4a are swung forward and the track section 4a is folded under and supports the table in reclined position, as shown in Fig. 2; after which the operator draws the carriage forward upon the track table until the forward wheels 9iL enter and rest in the recesses 35 provided in the upper edges ofthe track bars 8a, the shouldersof which recesses serve to stop the carriage .with the bill holders thereon in operative position in the front of the case, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
With the bill holders in this position, they are readily operated from their normal upright position, either singly .or collectively, to and from the reclined position, shown by broken lines vin the same figure; in which reclined position, the foremost holder may rest upon the cross bar 14 at the forward end of the table.
As the weight of the hinged ends of a numberof the foremost holders is brought to bear directly upon the pivot rod 22 form ing the fulcrum for the foremost holder, the forward ends of the carriage and of the link plates are depressed and the rear ends of the eounterbalance arms are raised by reason of the gradually lightened load thereon, until after half or more of the bill holders have been rotated forward, when a further depression of the forward end of the carriage 'is stopped by the stop posts 28 striking the upper edge of the link plates 17 as shown in Fig. 3, after which the operation of the remaining rear holders is performed without the assistance of the counterbalance arms.
In the operation of the appliance, the support given to the rearmost holders by the when more than half Copies of this patent may be obtained for iive cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G.
the holders are in upright position, serves to relieve the follower support from the weight'ofthe same.
