city and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Type-Writing and Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to power-transmitting mechanism which may form part of a combined typewriting and computing machine ,of the type in which a motor is 'intermittently connected to the mechanism to be driven thereby.
The invention is in the nature of an improvement on the invention disclosed in the co-pending application Serial No. 875,554, vii-led Dec. 5, 1914:, (now Patent No. 1,231,108, dated June 26, 1917,) wherein there is shown an Underwood-Hanson typewriting and adding machine of the type in which the numeral keys of the typewriter are caused to set up pins which are subsequently engaged by a general operator, which operates through suitable mechanism to rotate the dial wheels and run up the number corresponding to the actuated keys. Said application shows an electric motor which normally remains at rest, except when driving the general operator, and which is controlled by a starting key. The latter controls a clutch for engaging the motor to drive the general op,- erator and also controls a switch in the motor circuit, so that when the starting key is depressed, the clutch and switch are closed, and the motor started, so that the general operator is driven through one complete operation, the clutch and lswitch being then opened automatically to bring the parts to rest.
The present lnventionrelates particularly to an improved form of clutchl mechanism and switch, and means for controlling the same.
In practising this invention the clutch is arranged to intermittently connect a driving element and a driven element, which may consist respectively of a gear connected to be driven by the motor, said gear is loosely mounted; said shaft being operable by one complete rotaand a shaft on which ti'on to effect an operation of the general operator of the computing mechanism. Said shaft may also operate suitable mechanism for returning the typewriter carriage as shown in said co-pending application, into position to commence a new line of writing. The clutch may comprise a ratchet connected to said-driving gear and pawls driven thereby, said pawls mounted on a lsup ort connected to the said. driven shaft. he clutch and switch controlling element may consist of a member mounted on the said driven shaft and having a limited rotation relative thereto .for controlling the clutch. l

As the driven shaft completes a rotation, said controlling member which rotates with it, is intercepted by the trip pin which, in the meantime had been restored, thus eilecting a movement of the controlling member relative to the shaft to release the clutch parts and open the switch.
A feature of the invention consists in the use of an electric switch, in which the switch contacts have a relatively fixed mounting, so
that they are stationary during the rotation of the clutch with which they are associated, the switch being mounted in the upper part of the clutch casing, where it is protected fromthe accumulation of dust and dirt to which the usual rotating switch element is to shift into Fig. 2 is afragmentary sectional front elevation of an enlarged scale taken on the line vvpin raised by the starting Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the clutch mechanism and switch, the pawls being out of engagement with the ratchet wheel, this being the normal position of the parts while the motor is at rest.

Referring vto Fig. 1, numeral key 9 and alphabet keys 10 when depressed, rock bell cranks 11 to swing type-bars 12 and cause them to print against a cylindrical platen 13 mounted on a carriage 14. The carriage is .20 on the type-bars provided with a rack 15 which meshes with a pinion 16 to rotate an escapement wheel v17 when the escapen'ient dogs 18 are reciprocated transversely thereofl by a universal bar 19, said universal bar being moved by heels when the latter are swung to printing position. The carriage is moved from right to left by-a spring' drum 21 which is connected to the carriageby a strap 22.
In said combined typewriting and computing machinethe numeral keys of the typewriter, set up numbers written in a certain column, by connections including a denominational dog or tappet- 25 on the carriage, and other devices not shown in the drawings.
Vhen a series of numbers has been set up, the operator depresses a starting key 26 to effect the operation of a general operator by which the set up numbers are carried into the computing wheels (not shown), and at the same time causing the typewriter carriage. to return to the proper point flor starting a new line of writ-ing.
The power for operating the general operator and for returning the carriage may be supplied by an electric motor 27 ofthe shunt type. The motor drives a shaft 28 connected to the motor shaft through a slip clutch 29 adapted to slip when the motor is subjected to overload, such as might occur from j amming of the mechanism. )Vhcn the shaft 28 is rotated, aworm 30 thereon drives a worm wheel 31.
The carriage is returned at the proper time by thc depression of the starting key 26 the trip clutch the the disk 56 and -at its other endto a which moves a lever 32, causing the latter to rotate a second lever 33 about a pivot`34 to raise a clutch controlling trip pin 35. This causes the operation of clutch mechanism (hereinafter fully described) by which a driving connection is made from the worm wheel 31 to an operating shaft 36. At the same time a switch is'operated (as fully eX- plained later) to connect the motor 27 with a source of power so that the motor is started and rotates the shaft 36. A crank arm 37 at one end of the shaft 36 carries a crank pin 38 which engages with a block 39, the latter slidable up and down in a groove 40 in la slide 41 and operating to drive the slide 41. forwardly. This latter structure may be identical with that shown in the patent to Frederick A. Hart, N o. 1,190,233, dated July 4, 1916. The slide 41 has an' extension 42 in engagement witha yoke 43 on a rack bar or general operator 44, so that the latter moves forward with the slide. Theforward movement of the rack bar 44 rotates a pinion 45 which meshes with .a sector 46 to rotate the i wheel or driving member 31 and the operating shaft or driven member 36 (Figs. 2, 3, and 7) is controlled by a clutch-operating disk or movable element 55 (Fig. 7) which is mounted for a limited oscillating` mov'ementon a second disk 56. The disk 56 is fixed to the shaft 36 by a set screw 60. Shoulder screws 57 which pass through slots 58 in the disk 55 and are threaded into holes 59 in the 4disk 56, permit the disk 55 to swing from the Fig. 3 position to the Fig. 4 position to wheel 31 to the shaft 36.
The worm wheel 31 is normally disconnected from the operating shaft by means of pins 63 on the disk 55 which hold pawls 61 out of engagement with aratchet wheel 62. The pins 63 pro-ject through holes 64 in to engage with the pawls 61, the pawls 61 being pivoted on headed 'studs 65 secured to the disk 56. The pawls are held against the pins 63 by springs 66 each anchored at one end to a pin 67 on the disk 56,

As shown in Fig. 3, the clutch-operating disk 55 is held under tension by a spring 70 connected to one of the pins 67 and a bent-0H portion 71 on the disk Toconnect the worm wheel 31 to the operating shaft 36, the trip pin 35 is raised, as heretofore described, byan actuation of the starting key 26, o-ut of the path of the stop lng 71. The switch whichis normally open' (Fig. 5) comprises Contact spring arms 75, 76, provided with contacts 77 and mounted -on a block of insulating material 78 by screws 79. The contact arms areconnected to the motor by a pair of conductors is secured to the casing 81 by screws 82.
y The switch is closed an instant after the worm wheel 31 is connected to the operating shaft 36. To accomplish this, there is mounted on the disk 55A and insulated there-- from, a finger 83 whichv normally engages with the spring arm to hold it out of engagement with the contact arm 76. The arm 75 may be faced w-ith a wear plate 75 of steel or other suitable wearing material to prevent wear of Ithe arm. 75 by the finger 83. When the disk 55 is moved by the spring 70, the finger 83 is moved out of engagement with the spring arm 75 to permit the latter to engage with the spring arm thus closing the circuit from the source of powerto the motor 27. It should also be understood'that with the pawl and ratchet construction, the driving and driven members are readily connected and disconnected and that these operations and also the opening and closing of the switch are controlled from movable element 55. Also the disk or movable element 55 has a primary movement to effect a. connection between the worm wheel or driving member 31 and the operating shaft or driven member 36, and a movement to close a switch. Said disk or movable element 55 has a reverse movement which is effective to open said switch, said disk being effective after the opening of the switch to disconnect the driven member from the drivof the pins 63 engagratchet wheel 62.-
lt should further be understood that the 'contact springs are mounted at relatively fixed points and theircontact points far removed from the lower part of the casing and thus protected from dirt which might 'accu-- mulate in the bottom of the casing.
Varilations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and p'ortions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, claim:
1. The combination with a motor and mechanism to be driven thereby, of a rotory driving element and a rotary driven element connected respectively to the motor and said mechanism, a clutch comprising a pawl and ratchet mounted on said elements, a clutch controlling device mounted on the pawlcarrying element and having a limited shifting movement relatively thereto, the clutch pawl is controlled, means to shift said controlling device to causethe pawl to engage the ratchet and thereby cause the driven-element to be rotated through a complete rotation, -and means to shift said conthe disk or l by which trolling device at the completion of a rotation of the driven element into position to release the pawl from its ratchet.
2. The combination with a motor and mechanism to be driven thereby, of a rotary driving element and a rotary driven element connected respectively to the motor and said mechanism, a clutch comprising a pawl and ratchet mounted on said elements, A

said circuit adapted to be closed by the with-` drawal of said starting pin, the connections being such that after the starting pin is returned to effective position, said circuit remains closed until the disk arrives at normal position when the circuit is opened and the arrest of the disk Causes the'pawls to free themselves from the ratchet and permits the motor to rotate idly.
