Application filed August 8, 1918. Serial N o. 248,956.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN ANDREW SEEBY, a citizen of the Unitcd States, and a resident of Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Planking-Clamp,of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a clamp adapted to be anchored to the timbers of a ship and provided with means to clamp the planking in position while being secured to the timbers.
The object of my invention is to provide a planking clamp improved in various particulars, whereby certain advantages and results are obtained, among which are the following: The main clamp bar carrying the clamp screw is provided at the opposite end from the screw with screw holes whereby screws may be employed for fastening a wood block on the bar to constitute a rest adapted to seat on a frame timber and a novel anchor is provided tor the clamp, the anchor comprising separable members which in practice are in the form of a screw eye for engaging the timber and a shackle through which the main bar has sliding movement together with a bolt pivotally and detachably connecting the shackle and screw` the arrangement making tor the ready positioning ot the anchor and its engagement with the timber and otherwise promoting con venicnce in setting up the clamp and shifting the same as desired. An important incidental result also is obtained that with the shackles detached from the screw eyes the latter are available as set screws for setting up the planking edgewise as the screw eves may be so positioned as to take the thrust of a wedge driven between the same and the edge of a plank.

The letter a indicates ships timbers and o planking thereon. My improved clamp includcs an elongated 11 with a threaded bore therethrough to receive a clamp screw 12 adapted to engage the planking. On the bar 10 at the opposite end is secured a wood block 13 which may be made from any suitable material available for the purpose in a shipyard, said block being secured by screws 14 passing through screw holes formed in the bar 10.` The block 13 affords a substantial seat for the clamp at the end opposite the screw and at the same time it promotes lightness as well as cheapness, the block being readily renewable when worn and from material involving practically no cost since pieccs around 'a shipyard will be available for the purpose.
My improved anchor for the clamp consists of a screw-eye or eye-bolt 15 and a shackle 16 detachably and pivotally connected by a transverse bolt 17. The screw 15 may be readily secured to a timber as indicated bv the holes c in Fig. 1 and the shackle 16 slidably receives the bar 10 and indirectly takes the thrust of the screw. The slidingot' the bar in the shackle permits of three or more planks being clamped in succession with one setting up of the clamp and the detachable connection permits of the ouick shifting of the clamp as required. lVith the shackle and clamp detached from the anchor screw or bolt 15` it will be apparent also that the anchor may be so positioned adjacent to the edge ot' a plank that wedges may be driven between the anchor and the plank for werlging the plank edgewise to make a close lioint.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
