SKID FOR DIIN'ING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DoBsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palisades, in the county of Mesa, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skids for Mining-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a skid or runner, and more particularly to the class of adjusta ble skid attachments for coal cutting or mining machines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a skid of this character, wherein the same can be readily placed crosswise of the under frame of a coal cutting machine, such for example as that type known in the trade as the Goodman short wall mining machine, to enable the same to traverse a working place and to avoid any obstructions or obstacles which frequently happen to be in the way of the path of movement of the machine, such as boulders rising out of the working surface or floor in the mine, and particularly should the floor be of soft or cla formation.
nother object of the invention is the provision of a skid of this character wherein the coal cutting machine can be readily raised or loweredrelative thereto to properly adjust the same for preventing the cutter bits thereof from going into the floor in the mine and especially when cutting in a pitchin vein, and also eliminating the necessity of acketing the machine for lifting the same over an obstruction or obstacle.
:A further object of the invention is the provision of a skid of this character, wherein the cutting operation by the coal cutting machine can be executed with despatch, as all conditions ordinarily met with to obstruct the travel of the machine and the perfect working thereof will be overcome, the construction of this skid and the attachment thereof to the machine being of novel form to assure the positive and successful operation of said machine A still further object of the invention is the provision of a skid of this character whichis comparatively simple in construction, readily and easily applied to a coal cutting machine, easily adjustable, thoroughly Specification of Letters Patent.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction and arrangement of elements, the construction of which will be exemplified in the description hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coal cutting machine in sumping position, showing the skid constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally the coal cutting machine and B its under frame having mounted on one of'its side sills or beams C the bracket for the skid, both being hereinafter fully described.
The bracket comprises an angle iron forming the vertical plate 10 and the horizontal plate 11 constituting angle flanges at right angles to each other. The vertical plate 10 is of less length than the horizontal plate 11 which is rounded as at 12 at one end, the vertical plate 10 being cutaway at opposite ends as;at 13 and 14 and the end thereof at the cutaway portion 13 is beveled at 15 so as to avoid chafing of the steel cable of the coal ner presently described.

On the under face of the plate ll of the bracket are fixed diagonally disposedstop ribs or abutments 26 which are spaced apart the required distance and with which enga'gesthe head 23 of the jack screw 22 when the skid is in position beneath'themachine for use therewith. When the head 23 of the jack screw 22 is in engagement with any one of the abutments 26 and the machine A is in motion the skid will be prevented from working along the side sill or beam C of the under "frame B for the displacementofthe skid when the machine is cutting across the face of the coal and the skid is sliding upon the'working surfacejbed or floor of the mine. In other wordsvthese ribs or abutments p26 on the bracket will hold the skid in proper position relative to the machine A to I avoid displacement of said skid when traveling over the workingplaceor floor in the mine during the cutting operationofthe machine. The machine A can beraised and lowered by adjusting the jackscrew 22 relative to the skid so that when the machine is crossing'a working place in its cutting operation it will pass over any obstacles or obstructions and thereby eliminate the use of lifting jacks -or the cleaning of the way of the ma-- chine which requires labor, as well as it re tards the operation of the machinefor'the cutting of'the coal with despatch.
