IMPRCVEMENT IN CELLAR-HOISTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,790, dated July 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be a known that I, PETER 003m, of Mechanicsburg, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cellar-Hoists and do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper side of my device as applied to the entrance of a cellar. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line a a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a partial cross-section on line 2 z of Fig. l.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple, cheap, and efficient means whereby barrels and other similar articles may be lowered into a cellar; and to this end it consists in the construction and combination of the several parts of the device, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the outer passage to a cellar, inclosed by hinged doors 'B and provided with steps 0, all in the usual manner. Secured to or upon each side wall D are two grooved strips, E, which are placed at a distance of about two feet, from each other and extend downward from the upper to the lower sides of said walls in lines parallel to each other and to the stairs C, the outer strips, at their upper end, being placed at the outer side of the opening or passage. Fitted into the opening or passage is a platform, F, which has a width equal to the distance from the front to the rear sides of the grooved strips and a length just equal to the space between the pairs of strips, and is pro vided upon its ends with suitable lu gs f, which correspond to and fit into the grooves 0, so that, if said platform is raised or lowered, it will maintain a horizontal position and follow the inclination of said grooved strips or ways.
In order that the platform may be readily elevated or lowered, the following-described means areemployed: A rope, G, is attached to one side of the passage at its upper edge and midway between the ways E, and from thence extendsaround suitable pulleys g beneath said platform; from thence upward and over a pulley, H, pivoted at the opposite side and upper edge of said passage; and from thence rearward and slightly downward; and has its rear end secured to or upon a pulley, I, which is suitably fixed to or upon a shaft journaled upon the face of the wall. A sec- 0nd and larger pulley, K, is secured to or upon the shaft with the pulley I, and is provided with a rope, L, which is wound upon said pulley in an opposite direction from that with which the rope G is passed around its pulley, so that when one rope is unwound the other is wound up.
As thus arranged, it will be seen that by pulling outward upon the rope L the rope G will be wound upon its pulley and the platform raised to the upper side of the entrance, while by releasing said rope L the weight of said platform and its load will cause it to drop downward, by which means said rope G will be unwound and the rope L rewound.
It being desirable that the platform should occasionally be locked in place when elevated, a hooked lever, M, is pivoted to or upon the side of one of the guides, and, when its lower end is thrown outward, engages with a notch, m, provided within the contiguous portion of said platform, and holds the latter in position. To release the platform it is slightly raised by means of the hand-rope, after which the upper end of the lever is thrown forward and its lower end removed from the recess or notch m.
As thus constructed, this device affords a means whereby heavy articles can be quickly and easily lowered into or raised from a cellar without the usual labor and often injury which result from efforts to accomplish the same end by the usual appliances.
-Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1. In combination with the platform F, provided with the lugs f and pulleys g, the cords G and L, the pulleys H, I, and K, and the ways E, provided with the grooves e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the platform F, provided with the notch m, the lever M, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
