Be it known that I,-JoHN LAnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watkins, in the county of Adams and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks,of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved animal releaser, and has for its object to produce a simple device of thischaracter whereby an .nimal may be 'easily' and quickly stored ina stall or manger and as easily released when desired.

A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which shall be simple, strong, easily operated and positive in operation.

Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

The casing of the improvement preferably comprises a square or rectangular member which is indicated by the numeral 10. The casing is integrally formed, upon its inner face with a peripheral flange 11, and this flange, on the diametrically opposed sides thereof is formed one with a central slot 12 and the other with an elongated slot 13. In the slot 13 is received one end of a latch bolt 14:, the said bolt being pivoted through the medium of a headed threaded element 15 passing transversely through the flange 11 and havingits threaded end providedwith a securing nut 16. influenced in one direction through the medium of a spring 18 that is secured thereto, the said spring being also secured to the lower flange of the casing, preferably through the medium of a bolt 19 which passes transversely through an opening 20 within which the spring is received. The bolt 20 is provided with a securing nut 21.

The latch bolt, at the center thereof is reduced on one of its edges and centrally widened on its other edge. The reduced edge is formed with a'notch 22 and lugs 23 disposed to the opposite sides of the notch. These lugs are designed to contact with a shoulder 24 formed upon the inner face of a rest plate 25 for the latch bolt. The shoulder 24 is provided by reducing or cutting away the inner face of the plate 25 from approximately the center thereof, and one or both of the ends of the said plate, upon the inner face thereof are notched as at 26 and the portions projecting beyond the notches are received in depressions 27 provided in the upper and lower flanges of the casing 10. The plate 25 is secured to the casing through the medium of bolts 28 passing through the upper and lower portions of the casing and through the ends of the plate, the said portions being engaged by nuts 29.

The face plate 30 of the casing 10, opposite the notched portion 22 of the latch bolt 14 is provided with a vertically disposed elongated opening 31 and this opening is designed to receive therein a bit 32. The bit has one of its edges notched as at 33, and the said notch is designed to be engaged by the bolt whereby to hold the bit in the casing. The finger piece must be operated to swing the bolt against the pressure of its spring before the bit can be released. The

bit is provided with a flange 34 and outward of the flange with an eye portion 35 to which is connected a chain 36, and this chain is secured to the halter or neck band of an animal to be retained in the stall.

The casing, at the corners thereof is provided with openings round for the major portion of their length but square a distance from the outer face of the said casing. Through these openings pass bolts 37 the said bolts adjacent to the heads thereof having squared portions received in the'squared portions of the openings. The threaded shanks 0f the bolts pass through suitable openings in a portion of the stall or manearers gel, nuts 38 securing the bolts thereon. lhe portion of the stall or manger to which the device is attached is provided with depressed portions or notches to receive the bolts and the projecting shanks of the bolts which are connected to the lock casing proper.

YVith iny improvement it will be seen that the device is simple and strong in construe tion; is firmly and securely attached to the stall or manger; that the latch bolt may be easily operated by pressure in an upward direction thereon; that the finger piece 17 is arranged close to the support for the casing so that contact thereof by the securing chain for the aniinal is thus obviated, and that the bit may be readily inserted, in the casing and engaged by the bolt and can not be released therefrom until the bolt operated.

Having thus describe l the invention, What is claimed as new, is

1. in a device for the purpose set forth, a flanged casin paid casing having slots in the side flanges thereof, a transversely arranged latch bolt pivotally secured in one of the slots and passing through the other slot, spring means for influencing the bolt in one direction, a rest plate for the bolt secured to the inner face of the casing and having a shoulder upon its inner face designed to receive one of the edges of the bolt, said plate having an opening therethrough, the casing having an opening alinbeing notched and provided With lugs to the opposite sides of the said notch, the opposite ed 'e of the plate, opposite the notch being widened, a spring secured to the latch bolt and to the lower flange of the casing for swinging the latch bolt in one direction, a rest plate for the bolt having its ends let in the upper and lower flanges of the casing and havinga shoulder on which the lugs of the latch bolt rest, said rest plate having an opening therethrough, the casing having an opening alining With the opening in therest plate, and a notched bit carrying a tying element designed to be passed through the openings and to have the notch thereof engaged by the bolt,
