RAILROAD-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. is, into.
Application filed December 5, 1918. Serial No. 2653s? 7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Inn A. Gannnn. a citizen of the United States. residing at Towson, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroach'l ies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad ties'and has for its object to pro vide a tie that is simple and durable in construction, and which is so constructed as to greatly increase the life of the same.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved tie.
Fig. '2 is a vertical longitudinal. section of Fig- 1.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig' at is a vertical cross section of Fig. 1 showing the position of the rail;
Referring to the accompanying drawin forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts through the several views thereof, 1 designates a metal casing which is corrugated at the sides and ends and is provided in the sides and top with apertures 2 and openings 3 extending across the top thereof. Across the said openings 3 are two plates 4: which have their ends bent downwardly and are secured to the inner surface of the casing 1 by the rivets 5. These plates 5 serve as rests for the rails and are provided with a number of apertures 6 so arranged as to accommodate difierent size rails 7 and through which the spikes 8 pass to the filler 9. The said filler 9 may be of wood, compressed pulp, or other suitable material into which the spikes 8 can be driven, and is provided with a number of concavities 10 in the under surface which prevent the said ties from creeping on the road bed. The metal casing 1 is covered on all surfaces with concrete or cement 11, which isapplied by placing the said casing in form and placing the filler 9 in position in said casing and pour ing the cement or concrete between the filler and the form. the apertures 2 permitting the cement or concrete to flow freely to both sides of the casing 1. The said concrete on the upper surface of the casing l is flush with the upper surfaces of the plates 4.
It will thus be seen that the metal casing 1 being entirely cove ed by the cement or concrete the metal will be preserved andthe life of the tie will be greatly increased. at the same time the tiller 9 being of wood or other suitable fibrous material will permit of the use of spikes for holding the rails, and dispense 'ith the use of bolts or clamps for this purpose.
Having thus described my invention. What 1 claim is:
i. A railroad tie comprising a metal casing covered with concrete, a. fibrous filler for said casing, and plates extending across said casing and having apertures for the spikes or other holding means. C
2. A railroad tie comprising a metal caising having corrugated sides and apertures in the-sides and top thereof and covered with concrete. a fibrous filler for said cas1ng,an plates extending across the upper surface of the said casing and having apertures therein.
3. A railroad tie comprising a metal casin 9; having corrugated sides and apertures in said sides and top, and LWU openings in the top of the casing extending entirely across the same, said casing being entirely covered with concrete. a plate extending across each of said openings in the casing and having its ends projecting downwardly and secured to the inner surface of the casing and provided with a number of apertures in its upper surface, and a filler of fibrous material for said casing having concavities in its lower surface.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
IRA A. GARB'ER.
