DAVID ALLEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-VENDING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed December 13, 1916. Serial No. 136,731.
To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dav n zen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Cigar Vending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vendlng machines and has particular reference to a device of the class described adapted particularly for vending cigars.
The primary object of myinvention is to provide a device of the class described which after being emptied will not receive a coin or permit the'same being deposited in the coin receptacle. -Another object of my invention is to provide means associated therewith to prevent the bridging of the cigars over the-delivery drum.
A-still further object of my invention is to provide a moistening means associated therewith to prevent the cigars from becoming extremely dry, which is an objection against the cigar vending machines now 1n common use.
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efiicient in operation and that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the outer .casing of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with the sliding cover removed;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of my invention showing a cigar about to be delivered';
' drum, and V Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a humidor used in connection with my invention;
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the means employed in my invention to insure the uniform delivery of the cigars to the discharge 2 Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the (11S- ALLEN, a citicharge and the means for retaining the same to prevent rotation thereof when the casing has been emptied of the cigars.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, A designates my invention in its entirety having a base 1, and end walls 2 and 3, the lower edge of the wall 3 bei'n provided with an opening 4- to permit the ischarge of the cigars. Side walls 5 and 6 are mounted on the said casing and provided with longitudinal grooves therein to permit the top 'Zfto be slidably mounted thereon. The end wall 2 is hingedly connected by means of hinges 8 mounted on one edge thereof and provides means for gaining access to the humidor and also for removing the top. A discharge drum 9 is rotatably mounted in the side walls and is provided with a longitudinal recess 10. A spring 12 1s mounted within the said recess to normally retain the cigar in alinement with the periphery of the drum 10. A pair of corrugated rubber strips 13 are mounted transversely of the roller to provide means for preventing the bridging of the cigars and are used in conjunction with a small screw having an enlarged head 13 which is mounted adjacent the said longitudinal slot over the periphery of the drum, the said screw being adapted to engage a supporting plate 14 and thus agitate the same upon the rotation of the drum. The plate 11 is suspended. or detachably mounted on a pair of lugs 15 and 16 mounted on the side walls. The said plate 14 comprises a sheet of metal having the edges thereof bent laterally of the body portion. One of the said bent. portions "providing means for retaining the said plate in the desired position and the opposite end providing guiding means for the cigar upon the rotation of the said drum. A transverse strip 17 forming a brace means for the end is secured to the strip 17 and when the door said strips being 2 is closed, said spring is disposed into ongagement with the depending portion of the plate 14 to hold the plate 14 inwardly displaced, but to permit opposite movement thereof when engaged by the head 13, so as to permit the latter to pass the inner depending portion of the plate'14, when the drum is turned to dispense the cigars.
On the opposite side of my rotating roller are provided a pair of strips rigidly connected to the side walls of the casing, the mounted on a slant for a purpose which willhereinafter appear. plate 20 is detachably mounted on the said strips and having the edges thereof bent similar to those described to the supporting plate 14 and for the same reasons.
The supplemental plate is detachably engaged with the end wall 3 of my; invention by means of a screw or other securing means 21 fastened to the said wall and engaging the body portion of the said plate. A lateral extension 22 is provided on the said body portion extending over the supporting plate 20 to retain the same in the desired position and also providing means for alin-' ing the cigars so the rotating drum in the desired position. A cushionin means 23 is mounted on the under side 0 the said supplemental plate to prevent scratching of the plate 20, in the same manner that the cushion 19 coacts with the plate 14, as well as to firmly hold the plates in position.
The locking means for my invention comprises a sheet metal plate 24 rigidly secured to the side walls of my invention and provided with a plurality of transverse openings 25 for a purpose which will hereinafter be described. A lateral extension 26 is provided on the free end of the sheet metal plate Y 24 to prevent the cigars from being deposit- 3 .;35 to slide Qfr'e'e end of the said ed before reaching the desired position. An opening is provided intermediate the ends of the said laterally bent ortion 26 to permit a catch 27 which is hingedly connected to a cleat 28 to engage the roller 9. The free end of the cleat 28 is provided with an opening therein to receive a bolt 29 which detachably secures the said cleat in a central transverse opening and also retains a spring 30 in engagement with the catch 27 to engage the same with the drum 9. The end of the catch 27 is flared as at 31- to permit the said drum being freely rotated. A plate 32 is adjustably secured to the transverse slots -25 having a diverging or. downturned end portion to deflect 'ci'gars whendischarged from the roller or drum 9. A plurality of parallel slanting cleats 33' and 34- are mounted in spaced relation to the side walls to permit the humidor supporting plate between the said cleats, the
plate having a transverse strip 36 mounte thereon to limit the that they will be fed to sEsT A\II\A\LABLE CQ'r movement of the plate.
posite directions provides a retaining means for the humidor and also a supporting means for a foraminous plate 38 which is secured to one of the said bent edges. A receptacle 39 is niountedon the said plate and retained therein by means of a pair of wings 40 formed on the strip 37. A standard 41 is mounted on the base 1 to provide a supporting means for a plate 42 having one end thereof secured to the standard and the opposite end engaging the base plate adjacent the openin 4 provided in the end wall 3 of the casing. An extension 43 is provided on one end of my casing to provide a supporting means for a well consisting of a sheet metal plate having a body 44 secured to the said extension and having the opposite ends thereof-bent to form diverging end portions 45 and 46;, A plate-17 is secured to the end wall 3 above the opening 4 and-provided with a diverging wing portion 48 to deflect the water away from the said opening.
strip of spring metal 49 is secured to th base and having the free end thereof engag in the standard 41. The strip 49 thus pro vides a coin chute to distribute the same 1 the section designated R- which forms a coil 'tacle 50 and a consequential locking of th{ machine against operation. A designating plate 53 is mounted on the side wall adj acen the coin receptacle to taining a transparent plate and cate the grade of cigar in the machineani also the price thereof. 1 The operation of my invention is as fol lows: Upon the insertion of a coin in th' coin receptacle 50 the handle 51 is rotate( and if a cigar is in the longitudinal groov of the rotatable drum the same will be per mitted to rotate beyond the shelf 32 afte the coin has dropped into the coin retaiiie R and the cigar depositedon the plate 0 chute 42, from where it slides into the we. 44. If on the other hand the cigars hav been previously exhausted the catch 27 wi engage the longitudinal opening as shown i Fig. 6 and prevent further movement of tl roller. Thus the spring 52 will cause tl return of the roller to its original positio when the coin will be returned to the perst operating the same. It is of course obvio= that when the cigar is in the groove, in spective of its size the spring 12 will for the same into engagement withthe catch i thus preventing the said catch from enga ing with the groove.
he desired method of refilling my cash with cigars is to insert a box of ciga through the door 2 in an inverted positic depositing them as desired upon the remov of the top.
From the above description taken in connection with the'accompanying drawings, it
*"j nation with a casing walls, of a hopper-shaped receptacle formed having a longitudinally therein to receive a cigar, a spring member can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and. when assembled can be placed upon themarket and sold at a minimum cost.
It will beunderstood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general embodiment of'my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made withln the scope of the. appended claims and withoutsacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
