Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: H
Be it known that we, OLLIE L. LAFFERIOR and NELsoN A. LArrnRioR, citizens of the United States, residing at Argyle, in the ed to that general type including a plurality of reciprocable plungers to produce a suficient violent agitation of the water in the body receptacle of the machine to force said .water through the clothes to clean them.
It is in general an object of the present invention to improve the efliciency and struc ture of devices of this character and the ease withwhich said devices may be operated.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts as more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved washing machine, showing a tub positioned therein;
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the washing machine;
Fig.3 is a vertical sectional view through the washing machine on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2;
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, the present invention is illustrated in connection with a tub A and a supporting means therefor indicated generally by the character 5.
For supporting the present mechanism, a pair of uprights 18 are secured to the sup porting portions 5. Connected to the upper ends of the uprights 18, by means of the hinges 20, are the vertical arms 21. Rotatably mounted in the upper ends of these arms is a transverse shaft 22. Bars 22 are mounted on the upper ends of the arms 21 and extendtherefrom in parallel relation,
and their outer ends being connected by a cross bar 23. Rotatably mounted in the outer ends of the said bars is atransverse crank shaft '37. These arms are held in a horizontal position by braces 24 which are secured'to said bars, and to the arms 21.
This plunger mechanism comprises a shaft 27 which is held spaced above and parallelto the shaft 22 by rigid arms 28 connecting them, there being a pair of these arms provided adjacent each end of the shaft-27 and positioned on each of the shafts 22 and 27 respectively between each pair of arms, are
sleeves 29 and 30, there being two of the sleeves 30 between each pair of links. A pair of links 29 are loosely secured on each of the sleeves 29 and the links of each pair extend in opposite directions and are each secured to the upper end of a member 31 .which carries a plunger proper, each comprising an inverted funnel-shaped member 32 having at its apex a shank 33 which is attached to the corresponding member 31. Levers 35 are secured to each sleeve 30 extending therefrom, each at different angles to the horizontal, each having its otherwise free end bifurcated and secured at 36 to a respective tubular member 31. Thus by reciprocably rocking the sleeves 30 the plungers will be vertically reciprocate and no two plungers occupy the same horizontal position at one time, so that a continuous plunging operation is procured. For rocking these sleeves, the crank shaft 37 is journaled in bearings 38 intermediately carried by the side bars 22 and carries an operating handle 39 outwardly thereof and is provided intermediately with a plurality of cranks 40 to each of which is secured a pitman 41 connected to an upstanding yoke 11, one of iWhlCh is carried by each sleeve 30, there being thus four of these pitmen provided.
Thus by turning the crank handle 39, the machine will be operated to successively move the plungers down into the tub whereby a violent agitation of the water therein which forces the water through the clothes to efliciently clean them. The machine may be easily operated and the plunger mechanism may be readily manipulated to facilitate placing a tub On or removing it from the supports 5.
What is claimed is: I
1. A washing machine including spaced uprights, a shaftmounted in the uprights, a pair of arms carried by the shaft in spaced relation and extending upwardly therefrom,
