Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 15, 1918. Serial No. 228,608.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Fire-Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fire extinguishers and relates particularly to fusible members for automatic sprinklers and similar puroses.
The object of the present invention is to provide a fusible member for the purpose specified, which shall be simple in construction, strong, durable and effective for its designed purpose. To effect this object, a fusible member of my invention comprises the various features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, in whic my invention is fully illustrated,
Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, front and rear face views, on an enlarged scale, of opposite sides of a fusible member embodying my invention.
Fig. 3 is a side or edgewise view thereof.

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view thereof on the line 5-5 of Fig. 41.
Referring now to the drawings, my improved fusible member, designated as a whole a, consists of two plates 1 and 2 soldered together, said plates being preferably stamped from sheet phosphor-bronze or other suitable sheet metal, and being of proper width and thickness to afiord requisite strength. When operating in tension, said plates 1 and 2 are preferably stamped from metal of about 17 gage.
As shown, said plates 1 and 2 are counterparts of each other, being of the same size and shape, thus requiring but one set each of blanking and swaging dies for forming the same, and are symmetrical on both sides of a longitudinal center line.
As shown, also, said fusible member is adapted to be applied through the medium of toggle arms indicated in dotted lines at 3 and 4, Fig. 4:, the relation being such that said fusible member GRri sHAw,
will act in tension. To provide for engaglng the toggle arms 8 an a with said fusible member a and to permit said toggles to separate when said member fuses, each of the plates 1 and 2 is provided with a hole 5 in one end thereof and a slot or notch 6 in its opposite end, and are soldered together with the slot 6 in one thereof in register with the hole 5 in the other, thus providing for pulling said plates apart endwise, as contemplated.
To strengthen the connection between the plates 1 and 2 and thus correspondingly relieving necting said plates,
said plates are provided with interlocking shoulders 7 and 8 formed on the overlapping connected ends of said male shoulders 7 being formed at the ends of portions of said plates struck u from the connected sides or faces thereof, shown at 9, and the female shoulders 8 being formed at the ends of recesses struck back from the connected sides or faces of said plates, as shown at are two sets of said opposite shoulders 7 and 8, the male and female shoulders of each of said sets of shoulders being formed, respectively, on different plates and the shoulders of each set facing in opposite directions.
Said shoulders 7 and 8 will be inclined relatively to the planes of the connecte sides of the plates 1 and 2, the angle of inclination being such that tension applied to said plates will produce a desire component of force tending to effect disengagement of said shoulders and to force said plates apart. For general uses, a desirable angle plates, the

In the preferable construction shown, also, the sides of the portions of said plates between the shoulders 7 and 8 thereon, respectively, are disposed in planes which are inclined to the planes of the sides of the plates of which they are parts, the angles of inclination depending upon the distance between the different sets of shoulders and the distance which they project from the faces of said plates, both of which dimensions may vary within considerable limits, thus producing a corresponding variation in the inclinations of said plates between the shoulders thereon and the sides or faces thereof.
