Description
D. H. WINSLOW.
ROAD SCHAPER.
APPLICATION FILED IAN. I4. I9I9.

DAVID HERBERT WINSLOW, OF RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
Application filed January 14, 1919.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID HERBERT VINs- Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raleigh, in the county of Wake and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and usef-ul Road-Scraper, 0f which the following is' a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for use in repairing roads, one of |the objects of the invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive and eiiicient structure which, when drawn Over a road, will remove ridges Vand other raised port-ions by first loosening the surface material and then scraping it into depressions after which, as a partl of the one operation, the material thus distributed is packed so as to leave the road smooth and free from all undesirable depressions and raised portions.
A still further object is to provide a machine of this character which will operate efficiently on Iall kinds of rural roads Iwhether they be of ordinary soil, of sandclay, gravel or macadam.
Another object is to provide a road machine of this charac-ter which can be repaired easily, and which can be readily manipulated, ythe said machine operating in the same manner as a plane to loosen and shave olf elevated portions and lill in the depressions.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel de'tails of construction -a-nd combinations o-f parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim it being lunderstood" that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit, or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appending claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:

2 an intermediate cross beam and 3 a rear cross beam, all of these beams being connected at their ends by longitudinal side beams l to rthe front ends of which are connected the ends of a chain 5 to which the draft animal or a tractor may be connected.
Spikes 6 which are preferably case hardened are driven through the beams l and 2 and are arranged in longitudinal series. The points of these spikes extend below the beams l and 2 so as 'to dig into the surface of the road and loosen the material thereof. A scraping blade 7 is secured to and covers the front face of the rear beam 3. Arranged back of the beam 3 is a packing section formed of side strips S to the bottom faces of which are secured 'the ends of packing strips 9 which are inclined upwardly and forwardly and arranged in lapped relation as shownin Fig. 2. Chains l() or the like connect the rear ends of beams 4 to the fron-t ends of the strips 8.
In using the device herein described it is placed on the surface of the road "and drawn forward by any means desired. The points of the spikes 6 will dig into the surface of the road so as t0 loosen the material. The blade 7 following these spikes will act as a. slicer and scraper, engaging the loosened `material and scraping away the ridges or raised portions. The material lthus scraped will be drawn along and deposited in the depressions in the surface of the road. The packing sectio-n following the blade 7 will ride over the material thus distributed and will pack it tightly, leaving a smooth road surface free of all undesirable depressions and raised portions. If desired any suitable weight may be placed 0n the packing section.
What is claimed is:
A road scraper including beams, spikes carried by the beams `and projecting therebelow for loosening the surface material of a road, another beam back of the spike carrying beams, a scraping blade upon the front facev thereof, connections between the beams, all of said beams being extended transversely of their path of movement and cooperating to limit the downward movement of the spikes into the surface material of In testimony that I claim the foregoing the road, connected packing strips back olf as my own, I have hereto affixed my signathe 'beams and arranged in lapped relation, ture 1n the presence of two witnesses.
