The -ain plate is mounted tor adjustment in two distinct resi ect-s, that is, about ai: airis which alters the obliquity oi' the cani slot, and bodily transversely ot the machine.. rl1 e obtain the iirst ci these adjustments the plate is "ounted upon a support or table 53 upon which area, series et studs (three are shown), which project into arc shaped slots in the plate, 'lhese slots are arranged about a common center so that the plate may be turned on a trunnion 55 the axis ot which preferably lies somewhere in the cam slot shown,'the pin lill being positioned at that point in Fig. l of the draiviiigs, thus making easier the adjust ment of the plate. rihe movement oi' Vthe cam plate is obtained through bolts 56 in a flange 57 on the table onerbolt being' loosened. and the other tightened to turn the plate, and a scale 5S is provided to show the degree otangula-rity of the'cam slot, lWhen' the plate is properly positioned relative to the table it is secured thereto by tightening the studs 54.
rllhe other adjustment of" the cam plate is obtained by inovingthe table For this purpose the table has a dovetail mounted in a slideway 60 in a suitable part of the frame or bed ot the machine, as in the bracket S1, this slidevvay being arranged transverselyv of the machine and the table being movable bodily in it. The table is adjusted on the machine by a positioning bolt (i2 which may be screwed into the bracket 6l a greater or less distance as desired, the flange 63 on said bolt carrying the table with it through the medium of the piece 64 seouredto the outer edge oi' the table. The lock nuts G5 secure the bolt 62 in adjusted pbsition and carry table with them in the outward adjustment-oi' the bolt. A scale (Sti shows the degree of adjustment of the table relative to the frame of the machine..
lt will be observed that, as shown in the drawings, the tool holder Q5 extends in a generally 'oblique direction, being approxi-l mately parallel With the general direction of the cam slot 43, so that the face t of the tool T, mounted in the tool holder is substantially at a right angle to the genera-l direcy tion ot travel of said tool. Since the cam neet/gees plate 4-2 is so 'mounted that the degree 'of obliqnity et the cani may be changetbit is desirable that the tool be so mounted that it may be readily adapted to the various angles ot' the cam slot and its tace always 70 maintained at the most nearly correct cutting` angle, in the present embodiment of the invention the tool holder is so mount--J ed in the support if) that its forward end may be shitted troni one side to the other relative to the forwardly extending' part 24 and thus vary the angle of the face t of the tool relative to its path of travel. The holder is shown as'having a boss 5l' forming,` pivot for the holder and secured in a socket 68 in the apron Q3 by means of a bolt 6ft. This permits the front end oi the holder to swing laterally between ears 70 on the part Q4 above referred tox Bolts 27 in. said ears position and hold thetool holder, as shown particularly in Fig. 7. A second boss 72, at the iront end of the holder extends upwardly through a slot T3 in the part 2i, and a nut 74 serves to clamp the tool holder when positioned.
lt Will be seen that the tool T, which is V- shaped in cross section, is arranged in a longitudinal slot. 7.5 in the holder 25 and secured therein by a bolt 76 passingv through the boss .72 and' accessible at the upper pro- 95 I jecting end of the, latter. A positioning-` plate 77 is secured to the front tace ot the holder 25 over the slot 75 to locate the front face t of the tool as shown -in the drawings.
it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific form. slioivn herein,- butis capable of modification in various ways Without departing from the spirit or scope ot' the claims.
ila'ving'thus described my invention, what 105 I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isrl. in a gearcutting machine, the combination with blank holdingn mechanism, oi a tool carrier and tool, means for operating the carrier to cause the tool to travel. in a, g'ei'ierally oblique path across the face of the blank, said means being adjustable to change the degree of Obliquity of saidpath, and means tor vadjusting the tool to vary the angle of its cutting tace .relative to its path yof travel.
In a gear cutting machine, the combination with 4blank holding mechanism, .of a tool carrier and tool, means for operating the carrier to cause the toolvto travel in a carved path on an are ota'circle and in a `f ,fenerally oblique direct-ion across the face o .t the blank, said means being' adjustable to change the position of the axis of said are, and means tor adjusting the tool-to Vary the angle ot' its cutting face relative to its path' of travel. 7. "in a geni' cutting machine, the combination 'with the frame, of a tool ce1-rief, means i'oi moving the tool carrier, a, anni plate for guiding `said Carrier in its movement, a. supper 'for said cuni plate, means for adjusting said @um plate about an exis on said support und looking it in adjusted position, un means for' adjusting the support with a movement oi twmsiation rela-tive to the frame and for locking it in adjusted position. j
'In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence oi two witnesses.
