EDWARD GIRTH OF ALTON, ILLINOIS.
TRANSFER-HOLDER.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed August 23, 1918. Serial No. 251,195.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD GIRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Transfer-Holders, of which the following is a specification. This invention is an improved device for use by street railway conductors to hold, punch, and facilitate the dispensing of transfers, the object of the invention being to provide an improved \transfer holder which is simple in construction, which can be attached to a belt worn by the user and by means of which transfers can be readily and correctly punched and expeditiously issued as required.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure. 1 is a plan of a transfer holder constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a-similar view on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 .of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view of the same on the 'plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention, I
provide a plate 1 which is preferably made of sheet metal and which is of oblong rectangular formand is provided at opposite sides with inwardly turned flanges 2, 3 which are respectively provided with longitudinal slots 4, 5. The plate is also provided with slots 4*, 5 which are respectively coincident with the slots 4 and 5. On the under side of the plate are loops 6 through which a belt can .be passed and so that the transfer holder can be attached to a belt At opposite sides of having bearing openings 8 in which the core .adapted to 9 of a transfer roll 10 is mounted for rotation. Said transfer roll is a strip of paper on which a series of transfers, arranged end to end, are rinted and which transfers are separately detached from the roll as they are issued to passengers. A bar 11 is arranged transversely on the plate at a point near the transfer roll and the strip of transfers passes from the roll under said bar and lengthwise on the plate and is engaged at opposite. sides by the flanges 2,
3, said flanges serving to hold the transfer strip pressed closely against the plate. Near the end of the plate opposite the trans fer roll is a transverse slot 12 through which the transfer strip extends and along one side of which the transfers may be torn off as desired, one side of the slot forming a straight edge to facilitate the tearing off of the transfers.
A pair of bars 13, which, in practice, are made of wire, and which are arranged in spaced relation, extend transversely across the plate, near the slot 12. The plate has a trans verse slot 14 at a point between the bars 13 and has downwardly and outwardly turned guide flanges 15 at the sides of said :19 which are slidably connected to the guide flanges 15 so that said slide is arranged across the slot 14 and for movement transversely of the plate. Said slide also has a slot 20 parallel with and also coincident with the slide 17. A U-shaped member 21, has its arms connected respectively to the slides 16, 18 for movement therewith and also for independent movement thereon, the respective arms of said U-shaped member being provided with a punch 22 which is movable in the slot 17 and a counterpunch 23 which is movable in the slot 20. Said punch and counterpunch are for use by the conductor for punching openings in the transfer at the points required to indicate the time at which the transfer is issued. A U-shaped slide 24 is arranged for movement between the flange 2 and the plate and hasan opening 25 in its lower arm, which, is coincident with the slot 4 and carries in its upper arm a punch 26 which is also movable in the slot 4. Said slide with its punch and counterpunch opening may be adjusted as required lengthwise of the holder and is used for punching the transfers to indicate the car lines or cars on which the are to be honored.
transfers A slide 27, which is identical in construction With the slide at is provided for use in connection with the flange 3 and has an opening 28 coincident with the slot 5 and a punch 29 movable in the slot 5. Said slide with its punch and counterpunch opening is for use in punching the date on the transfer.
While It have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention and Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, it claim:
1. A transfer holder comprising a plate having transfer roll carrying means at one end, a tearon slot near the opposite end overhanging flanges opposite sides, ano
mounted on said punching means adjustably having coinciplate, said plate and flanges dent longitudinal slots and means being mounted on said flanges and arranged for movement between said flanges and plate and along said slots.
2. A transfer holder comprising a plate having a slot, bars extending across the plate and in spaced relation thereto, a pair of slides, one mounted on said bars for movement across the plate and the other mounted on the plate for movement thereacross and also arranged across said slot, and a Ll-shaped member having its arms connected to said slides one of said arms being provided with a punch and the other with a counterpunch.
1n testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
said punching
