WASHING-MACHINE.
Application filed August 30, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. CROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chesapeake, in the county of Lawrence and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a washing machine and the object of the invention is to provide a machine more efiicient than those heretofore employed for effecting the purpose required in this class of apparatus.
A further object is to provide a machme including a receptacle having a rubbing device in the bottom thereof, and coiiperating therewith a reciprocable' rubbing device carrying a plurality of clamping members, with certain novel means for operatlng the clamping members and associated directly with the mechanism controlling the operation of the reciprocable rubbing device.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of the machine in vertical section Fig. 2 is a top plan view Fig. 3 is a detail in elevation of shifting mechanism controlling certain gripping elements Fig. 4 is a detail in top plan of structure in the lower central portion of Fig. 1
Fig. 5 is a detail of the structure at the right of Fig. 1, looking from the opposite side.
The machine includes a main receptacle mounted upon standards including legs 12 and provided with a cover 14. This coyer supports a plurality of hangers 15 in which are carried rollers 16 supporting the reciprocable rubbing device designated as a whole by the number 18. A bar or frame 19 is pivotally mounted at 20 on the cover and is provided with an arm 21 carrying a handle 22 and engaging a rack 23 mounted vertically on the cover. Slots 24 through the cover accommodate vertical bars 25 having connection with horizontal bars 26 and 27, the latter bearing against rollers 16. This construction affords means for pressing downwardly the reciprocable rubbing device 18, the latter having connection with the axles of the rollers by means of rods 30.
The bottom of the receptacle includes a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919;
Serial No. 252,062.
corrugated removable rubbing device 31 comprising a plurality of transversely extending members triangular in cross section, as shown.
At one end of the machine, an operating lever 34 is pivotally mounted at 35 in a bracket 36 attached to the Wall of receptacle 10. The lower end of lever 34 has connection with a rod or bar 38 pivotally connected at 39 with a vertically extending bar or lever 40.
A bracket mounted on receptacle 10 serves to pivotally mount arm 46 connected at 47 with lever 40. Lever 40 is pivotally connected at its upper end as shown at 41 with a bracket 42. The rubbing device 18 is operated by means of arm 47 connected at 48 with a standard 49 secured to the rubbing device. Arm 47 is slotted as shown at 47 and arm 46 has a limited degree of movement independent of arm 47 in view of the aforesaid slot.
An operating rod 60 is controlled by a lever 61, one end of this rod having connection with a rocking member 62 having an end deflected as shown, and one of these deflected ends being connected with a rod 63 which in turn is connected with rod 64 extending downwardly along side of lever 40. Upon operating lever 61 and the connecting elements, rod 64 will raise the end of arm 47 with which it is connected, and permit'arm 46 to shift the rod 68 for the purpose described below. Connected with the element 50 is a rod 51 pivoted to arms 52 carried by movable clamping elements 53 00- operating with stationary clamping elements 54, whereby the articles of clothing are gripped and are carried lengthwise of the machine in contact with the stationary rubbing device in the bottom thereof.
In the operation of the machine, the rubbing device 18 is reciprocated by means of the lever 34, through which motion is imparted to rod 38 and lever 40, the latter in turn moving arm 47 and the rubbing device by reason of the connection effected through arm 46.
In changing the relative position of the arm 47, the arm 46 and the rod 68, in order to operate the gripping elements 53, the lever 61 is operated, shifting the rod and the connecting elements, whereby arm 46 assumes a new position with reference to the slot 70, being shifted from one end thereof to the other and stud 73 being locked in the upturned end of said slot. The respective end portions of the slot are designated 71 and 7 2 and are engaged by a stud 73 on arm or lever l6. This lever and the stud have connection with rod 68, controlling the element and the movable clamping members.
The clamping jaws are locked in closed position when the stud 73 is in end 71 of the slot, and are locked in open position when the stud is in end 7 2 of said slot.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a stationary rubbing member therein, a reciprocable rubbing member including a plurality of stationary and a plurality of cooperating clamping elements, means for imparting movement to the reciprocable member, and means connected with said means for imparting movement for operating the movable clamping members.
2. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a stationary rubbing element there in, a reciprocable rubbing element cooperating therewith, said reciprocable element including a plurality of stationary members and a plurality of movable clamping members, means for reciprocating the movable element, said means including an operating arm, and means connected with said arm for opening and closing the movable clamping members.
3. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a reciprocable rubbing device operating therein, a plurality of supporting elements within the receptacle, rollers operating thereon, means for suspending the reciprocable rubbing device from said rollers, the rubbing device including a plurality of movable clamping members and stationary clamping members, and means for throwing the movable clamping members into operative and inoperative positions.
at. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a reciprocable rubbing element mounted therein, including a plurality of stationary clamping members and a plurality of movable clamping members, an operating arm for the rubbing element, a pivotally mounted arm on the receptacle, means for operating said arm last named, a third arm connected with the arm last named and having connection with the arm first named, and means for varying the position of the third arm with reference to the first arm, said third arm having connection with the movable clamping elements.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CLARENCE E. CROW.
