JOHN BRADLEY, or PAwHUsK, OKLAHOMA. i
.SCYTHE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application med May 14, 191s. serial No. 234,489.
T0 all whom z'z may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN BRADLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawhuska, in the county of Osage and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scythes, of which the fol- This invention relates toan improved tool comprising a scythe and also comprising a lcutter for cutting brush, heavy (weeds, trimming trees and for other like purposes, the object of the invention being to provide a combination tool of this character which is extremely strong and durable and which can be readily manufactured at small cost.
The invention consists in the construction, combination andA arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a planv of a combined scythe and brush cutter constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is an elevation ofthe same,
Figs. 8 and 4 are `detailed sectional views on the plane indicated by the linesB-S and 4.-1 of Fig. 1 respectively.
The handle l is curved longitudinally and is made of 'angle iron, so that the handle comprises a web 2 and a flange 3 at the rear side of the web. At the outer end of the web the `same is provided with an upturned flange 4 which extends across the web. Hand holds 5, 6 which are arranged at right angles to each other, are respectively secured to the web and to the ange, rat'suitable points on the handle, by means of bolts 7, 8, k'as shown. The hand holds are arranged at the required angles with respect to each other4 to enable the tools to be readily grasped and used either for the purposes of a Scythe or for `the purposes of a brush cutter or tree or bush trimmer.
A Scythe blade 9 which in practice is about thirteen inches long, is arranged with its inner end bearing on the outer yend portion of the'web of the handle and also bearing yagainst. the fiange,.the liange 4 which is at of the blade as shown. The blade is secured in place by means of bolts 10 which enables the blade to be readily detached when desired. The blade is formed with a rear flange 11, as shown.
I also provide a cutter or knife 12 which comprises a flat plate 13 which is secured on the web of the handle at a point near the outer end thereof by means of bolts 14 which permit the said cutter to be detached from the handle when desired. The cutter is formed at its inner end with an arm 15 which is arranged at a suitable angle with respect to the handle, the said arm having a sharpened inner edge 16. The outer side of said arm is curved and is provided with a sharp cutting edge 17 which edge also extends through the outer end of the cutter.
The cutter is used for cutting heavy weeds, brushes, sprouts and also for trimming trees and when cutting brush or the like the same is caught in the V-shaped notch which is formed between the arm of the cutter plate and the web of the handle, the user of the tool pulling the same toward him after the same has been thus engaged with the brush or bush, and hence causing the sharpened edge of the arm of the cutter plate to coact with the inner edge of the web of the handle in cutting through the bush or brush, only a single straight pull on the handle being ordinarily required.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. A scythe comprising a handle made of angle iron and thereby provided with a web and a rear flange, and a blade having its inner yend secured on the web and bearing against the said flange.
2.' A Scythe comprising a handle made of angle iron and thereby provided with a web and a rear flange, and a blade having its inner end secured on the web and bearing against the said fiange, the handle being also formed with a flange at the outer end thereof and which extends transversely across the web and is united to the rear flange of the handle, said flange bearing against the rear side of the blade.A
3. In a tool of the class described an anthereby provided with a Web and a rear gie iron handle having a web and a flange flange, and hand holds arranged at right anat the rear Side of the web, in Combination gies to each other and respectively bolted to 10 with a blade detaohably secured on the web the web and to the flange. of the handle and bearing against the said In testimony whereof I aX my signature.
flange thereof.
4. A Scythe handle made of angle iron and JOHN BRADLEY.
