To all whom it may concern.
Be it lmown that I, ARTHUR G.-BooLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of-which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for cutting the armor or insulation of cables and particularly electric cables or wires preparatory to removing or stripping such insulation, armor or covering.
The object of the invention is to produce a cutting tool of the class referred to which may be held in theworkmans hand and drawn along the cable with a firm pressure, the construction of the tool being such as to prevent injury to the workman, it being practically impossible for the tool to slip off the cable during the cutting operation.
With the ordinary tools for the purpose referred to now in use, workmen are frequently injured by the tool slipping from the cable and cutting the hands, and in some cases, the hands come in contact with the fine steel wire fabric surrounding the core of the cable with the result that infection rapidly sets in and often times serious results follow.
A further object of the invention is'to provide a tool of the character referred to in which provision is made for adjusting the cutting bit or blade so that any desired depth may be obtained, and a cut may be made either longitudinally of the cable covering or transversely around the same.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.

The 12001 comprises an outer tubular shell or casing 1 which forms also the handle of the tool, one hand of the workman being placed around the shell or casing 1, leaving the other hand free to hold the cable.
At the inner end of the tool or that end which rests against the cable covering, the
shell or casing 1 is formed with diverging guide fingers 2 leaving a V-shaped space between them in which the cable is positioned in the cutting operation as shown in Figs. 2 and 8. Mounted adjustably in the casing 1 is'a bit or blade holder 3 of cylindrical formation, the body of said holder being longitudinally split at 4 from the lower end thereof upwardly a suitable distance, thereby providing bitclamping portions or jaws 5 between which a bit or blade 6 is placed and held. The bit 01'' blade 6 has an upwardly extending shank 7 which is shown as formed separately from the body of the blade and secured thereto by means of a pin or equivalent fastening device 8, the lower end of the shank 7 being formed with a slot 9 to receive the adjacent end portion of the bit 6 as shown in F ig. 1.
The bit holder is formed with 'a reduced and threaded portion 10 having a smooth central longitudinal bore 11 through which the shank 7 is slidingly adjustable. The end portion of the shank 11 is screw threaded as shown at 12 and threaded thereon is a bit adjusting nut 13 which bears against the adjacent extremity of the reduced and threaded por tion 10 of the bit holder as shown in Fig. 7. Adj aeent to its end, the portion 10 of the bit holder is formed with an annular groove 14 to receive the set screws 15 which are carried by the nut 13 andextend radially through threaded openings in said nut, the
inner ends of the screws 15 fitting in the groove 14 as shown in Fig' 7, and preventing the nut 13 from moving longitudinally upon upon the portion 14 of the cutting and adapted to bear firmly against the adjusting nut 13 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 7.
The lower extremity of the body of the cutting bit holder is beveled or conical as shown at 17, thereby forming a depth gage as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 8 by contact with the outer surface of the insulation 18 of the cable 19. The cutting blade or hit 6 is sharpened along its side or longitudinal edges as shown at 20, the cutting operation being performed by the corners 21, the end faces of the bit being flat or not edged as they do not perform any cutting operation. All four of the corners of the cutting bit 6 may be used, it not being necessary to resharpen the bit until all of said corners have been used.
The bit holder 3 is further provided with a pair of longitudinally extending grooves 23 arranged ninety degrees from each other. A set screw 2% is threaded through the shell or casing l, the inner end of said screw bein adapted for insertion in either one of the grooves 23. The set screw 24: thus prevents any relative rotative movement between the bit holder 3-and the shell or casing 1 during the cutting operation. At the same time the grooves 23 admit of the longitudinal adjustment of the bit holder 3 to obtain a desired depth of out.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will now be understood that a cut of any desired depth may be safely made through the insulation or covering of a cable or the like, either in a longitudinal or transverse direction, and this may be ac complished without any liability of injury to the workman who may therefore perform his work rapidly and economically. The lade or bit has four cutting points or corners all of which may be used before it becomes necessary to resharpen the same. The tool is also adapted for use in connection with cables of widely varying diameters, due to the disposition of the centering or guiding fingers or projections 2-.
I claim l. A tool for cutting through the covering of a cable or the like, comprising a tubular casing, cable centering projections diverging from one end of the casing, a cutting bit holder mounted for movement longitudinally and partial rotation within said casing, means for adjusting said -bit holder in the direction of its length to obtain greater or less projection thereof into the angle between said cable centering projections, means for maintaining said adjustment, and means for holding said holder against rotative movement.
2. A tool for cutting through the covering of a cable or the like, comprising a tubular casing, cable centering projections diverging from one end of the casing, a cutting bit holder mounted for longitudinal movement in said casing and comprising a threaded portion, a rotatable but otherwise non-shiftable threaded member engaging said threaded portion for afiecting a longitudinal adjustment of said bit holder in the casing, and a. cutting bit extending longitudinally of said holder and adjustable therewith and also independently thereof in the direction of its length to provide for 'arying the depth of cut.
3. A tool for cutting through the covering of a cable or the like, comprising a tubular casing, cable centering projections diverging from one end of the casing, a cutting bit adjustable longitudinally within said casing and projecting into the angle between said centering projections, means for adjusting said cutting bit lon itudinally to vary the depth of cut thereof, said bit holder being partially rotatable in the casing, and means for limiting such rotative movement of the bit holder.
