Be it known that I, HENRY J. PALMER, a citizen of 'the United States,` and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brookr lyn, in the county of Kings and State of Newr York, have invented a new and Improved Passengers Side Platform for Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to open cross-seat cars, and has for its general object to provide a combined protective cage and side platform whereby the passengers can travel longitudinally of the car without the use of a running-board and be at all times protected from accident, the cage being adjustable into projecting relation at either side of the car, whereby the latter can travel on an up and down double track with thc platform at the outside.

A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a frame mounted on the body of the car and embracing a foldable platform at each side, whereby the frame can be shifted to projecting relation at either side of the car.

With such and other objects in view, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which Will be set forth With particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,

Referring to the drawings, A designa-tes a car which is of the summer type and is constructed in the usual manner, except that running-boards are dispensed with and in place of running-boards are employed longitudinally extending platforms 1 at oppositev sides of the car, these platforms being mounted on a bodily movable cage B which is a framework somewhat- Wider than the car and is as long as the body thereof. This framework comprises horizontal rail members 2 and 3 Which slide on guides 4 and 5 carried by the body of the car.

Extending along each side of the'cag'e is a wire netting 6 or the equivaient, and this netting extends partly across the front at 7. Each platform is hinged at 8 to the cage at Va point on a level with the floor 9 of the car,

so that the platform 1 can fold upwardly to a vertical position, as shown at the left` Fig. 2, or downwardly to a horizontal position, as shown at the right. The bars 3, which are disposed below the Hoor 9. may each be connected with a crank 10 through a slot and pin connection 11, the cranks being mounted on a. shaft 12 which extends longitudinally of the car at a point under the Hoor. At one or both ends of the car is an upright operating shaft 13 connected by gears 14 with the shaft 12, so that when the motorman or conductor turns the shaft, the cage B will be shifted to the right or left, after. of course, the down latform is folded up. When the cage is slliifted the proper platform 1 is lowered so that the passengers can Walk along the same to and from the seats. It is to be understood that the car will have steps in the usual manner and that the platforms Will begin directly at the steps.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method of operation Will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and While have described the principle of operation, tngether with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desire-d as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

I. The combination of a.car body, a Inovable cage mounted thereon and Wider than the body, whereby a passageway may be provided at either side of the body, and a movable platform on the cage at each side to lic between the car body and the adjacent side of the cage.

2. The combination of a car body, a movable cage mounted thereon and Wider than the body, whereby a passageway may be provided at either side of the body, a movable platform on the cage at each side to lie between the car body and the adjacent side of the cage, and means operable at the end of the oar for shifting the cage to one side or the other.

3. The combination of a car body, a protective cage extending along the side thereof and movable laterally, means for moving the cage, and a folding platform mounted on the cage and arranged `at the floor level of the oar.

l. The combination of a car body and side structures extending along the body and movable laterally relatively to the body, said structures having outer Walls substantially parallel with the ear body, transverse connections uniting Said structures to constrain the same to move in unison7 and means to shift said structures to dispose either one in a projected position laterally of the oar body and dispose the other adjacent to the body; together With platforms for the respective structures.
