Specification of Letters Patent; I Patented Mar, 11, 1919.
Application filed November 20, 1916. Serial No. 132,349.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PAUL 'H. ZIMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVisconsim-havc invented new and useful Improvements in Circuit-Controllers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, form ing a part of this specification.
This invention relates to circuit controllers particularly adapted for starting alternating current motors although not limited to such use. I
In my prior application, Serial No. 89,809, filed April 8, 1916, there is disclosed a controller wherein the movable contacts have a compound pivotal and sliding movement to oil position and the arrangement also being such as to insure direct movement of the movable contacts from oil position to starting position.
The presentinvention relates to this general type of controller and has among its objects to provide for a compound movement of the movable contacts which will in: sure the direct movements described, 'while permit-ting use of the extreme position of the movable contacts for establishment of running connections and the intermediate position of said contacts for establishment of starting connections.
A further ohjcctis to provide a controller of the character Specified wherein the movable contacts will be insured firm engagement with their cooperating contacts for establishment of both starting and running connections and yet readily operable manually.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear. I
The invention will now be more fully and clearly described in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof.
In the drawing,
Figure l is a rear elevation of the switch panel of the controller;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1; 1 c y Fig. 3 is a detail view taken on the same section line as Fig. 2, but'showing the parts in a different relation, and,
Fig. 4' is a diagrammatic view of the switch mechanismeinployed to control an I A. C. motor through the medium of a trans former.
Referring to liigs.v 1 to 3, there areillustrated five contact arms 1 to 5 of a well known ty e mounted in'groups upon insulating b ocks 6 and 7 in turn fixed to a single supporting plate 8. best illn' trated in Figs. 2- andfii, eac-iiof theseco tact arms has a bearing plate 9, provided with a stud 10, the arm being penetrated a by the stud and having a transverse bear ing rib 11 on which to fulcrum and further having a spring pressure device 12 'tovyield ingly hold the same against .itsf'bearing plate; These contact arms cooperate respectively with contacts 152, 3-3 t 4",
Lee
' 55",.all of said stationary contacts being mounted u-porl an insulating anel:13.1= 'The contacts 1 to 5* are arrange in horizontal alinement to be simultaneously engagec by" the contacts 1 to 5, while' the contacts .4R and-5 are respectively vertically alined-.;.-- with the contacts 3, i and 5 to been gaged upon rectilinear movement of con tact arms 3, '4 and 5 following disengage mentof said arms from contacts 1" to 55; i
The panel 13, as shown in Figs. 2 and Q:
is supported upon a frame comprising a plate 1-1 having rearwardextensions lo and, 16 and the late 8 carrying" the movable contacts is plvotallysupported upon a carrier 17 slidably mountedupon rods 18 and 19 supported vertically by and between the extensions 15 and 16. The carrier pivotally supports the plate 8 upon spin 20 and has mounted upon said pin 'a friction roller 20 adapted to bear against a spring pressed friction plate 21 provided on the rear side of the plate14. v Also, the carrier has an upstanding-lug 22 to which are pivoted a tats and then slide the same through movement of said member to engage another of sa d contacts, said member having means to oppose its sliding movement to provide for the same sequence of pivotal and sliding movements of said contact element in returning to initial position. a
3. In a circuit controller, the combination with a plurality of stationary contacts, of a cooperating contact element supported for a pivotal movement to abut one of said contacts and for rectilinear n'iovement to engage another of said contacts and operating means for said contact clement including a toggle connection for effecting said movements progressively.
4. In a circuit controller, the combination with a plurality of'stationary contacts, of a cooperating contact element Supported for a pivotal movement to abut one of said contacts and for rectilinear movement to engage another of said contacts and operating means for said contact element including a toggle connection for etl'ccting said movements progressively, and in the same order for operation of said contact element both to and from a predetermined final position.
5. in a circuit controller, the combination with a plurality of stationary contacts, of a coopeating contact element, a movable member pivotally supporting said contact element for abutment with one of said stationary contacts and movable to slide said contact element relatively to said stationary contacts, a toggle connection between said contact element and said su 'iporting member and an operating member for said con; tact element. acting; thereon through said toggle to first move the same pivotally on said member and then slidingly through movement of said member.
(3. In a circuit controller, the. combination with a plurality of stationary contacts, of a cooperating contact element, a movable member pivotally supporting said contact clement t'or abutment with "one of said stationary contacts and movable to slide said contact element relatively to said stationary contacts, a toggle connection between said contact element and said supporting member and an operating member for said contact elei'nent actingthereon through said toggle to first move the same pivotally on said member and then slidingly through movement of said member for both final positioning and return o'i' said contact. clemcnt.
7. in a circuit controller, the combination with a plurality of stationary contacts, oi av cooperating movable contact element. a
'slidalo'ly mounted member pivotaliy supporting said contact, said member having means for opposing its sliding movement and operating means for said. contact, element including a toggle connection between the same and said member to initially rock said contact element toward and away from said contacts in response to reverse operating forces and thereafter effect sliding movements of said member in response to a continued operating force in a direction corresponding to that or the operating force.
8. In acirc'nit controller, the combination with, a plurality of stationary contacts, of a cooperating contact element, a bearing member for said clement upon which the latter is pivotally supported and biased in one direction, a movable carrier pivotally supporting said bearing member and means for moving said bearing member indt-ipendently of said carrier and also by movement of the latter to impart a compound pivotal and rectilinear movement to saidclcment for engagement of the latter with said contacts progressively and also for return of said element from final position to tion.
9. In a circuit controller, the combination with a plurality of stationary contacts, of a coiiperating contact element, a bearing member for said clement upon which the latter is pivotally supported and biased in one direct-ion, a. movable carrier pivotaliy supporting said bearing member and means including a toggle connection between said bearing member and said carrier tor moving said bearing member iinlcpendently of said carrier and also by movement of the latter to impart a compound pivotal and rectilinear movement to said element for engagement of the latter with said contacts progressively and also for return of said element. from final position to initial position,
10. in a circuit cimtroilcr tor alternating current motors, the combination with a pinrality of sets of stationary contacts, a plarality of cooperating: contact elements, and means supporting: said eiementa for movement together first pivotaily to engagecertain of said contacts for establisl'iing starting connections and then rectilinearly to en'- gage other of said contacts to establish running connections, said supporting means also providing; tor return of said elements from final position to initial position witln out reestablishment of starting connections.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
PAUL ll. ZIM'MER.
