CHUmv- AS ERJ To all whom it may concern: I
ton and State of West 1 Churn-Dashers,
Be it known that I, ARTEM'AS E. F.
flowers, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Brax- Virginia, have in-- vented new and useful Improvements in of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to churn dashers and is an improvement on a patent granted to me May 15 1917, Serial No. 1,226,518.
/ As in the a ove named patent, the object of the present invention is to provide a dasher formed of a single piece of material in the form of a disk, adapted to be applied to the dasher staff or a churn and which operates in theliquid as the staff is reciprothoroughlyand effectually agitate the same, wherebythe globules of oil are ruptured and the particles of fat quickly-liberated;
To accomplish this, the dasher is made from asheet of metal preferably in the form of a disk, having its central and peripheral" portions lying in the same plane, the same portions being connected together by radially disposed intermediate portions, there being provided at the edges of the said radially disposed intermediate portions upwardly and downwardly extending wings or blades pitched at acute angles with relation to the plane in which the central and peripheral portions lie. The said central portion is provided with arcuate incisions and the material at the inner edges is formed in semi-conical configuration thereby form-, ing hoods with openings at their outer or larger ends. Each alternate hood 'is disposed above the plane in which the central portion of the disk lies andthe other hoods are disposed below said plane.
It has been found in practice, that a dasher so constructed has a tendency to rotate, due to the inclination of the angularly disposed blades or wings and it is object of cated vertically to the present invention to overcome or reduce this tendency, in order to premit of a truly or nearly vertical movement of the dasher, so'as to direct the material passing therethrough at an angle for proper mixture. This is accomplished by forming openings in the horizontal surface of the disk for the passage of the material acted upon through these openings, the material thereby forma vertical column or stream, which re- 111g sists this rotary tendency. These openings the oppositely disposed dasher comprlses central portion 2 and a the plane Patented Mar. 11, 1919.

areso shaped as to cooperate with the open ings between theangular wings to direct the disk, to cause the broken particles to' comingle. i In the drawings:
I Figure 1 is a plan view of the dasher;
. Fig. 2 is a side view of the dasher secured upon the end of the dasher staflf Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view" on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
'material toward the outer periphery ofthe Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;. g
Fig. 5 isaview'similar-to Fig. a showing hood, this figure being taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is-a showing onemanner of mounting the dasher upon the staff; and i i Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the dasher showing a modified form of blades or wings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
a disk 1 which is preferably circular in plan and which is formed of a single sheet of metal. The disk includes a peripheral portion 3, the said portions lying in the same plane and being connected by radially disposed portions 4:, which also lie in the same plane. The portions 4 are provided at one edge with downwardly disposed wings or blades 5 and at their opposite edges with upwardly disposed wings or blades 6,'to form an angularly disposed passage for the liquid. The
intermediate portion is provided with a series of spaced arcuate incisions 7 and the material of the said portions 1 at the inner edges of these incisions is formed into semiconical hoods 8, the larger ends of which are outwardly disposed to provide additional passages for the liquid.
Each alternate in which the central portion 2 lies and the other hoods are disposed below said plane. The dasher and dasher stafi are intended for use in a churn body of any usual configuration and the said dasher may be eitljifer loosely mounted or fixed upon the sta Upon the downward stroke of the staff, those hoods 8 which arev disposed above the plane of the central portion 2 will have a tendency to force the liquid outwardly and radially and upon the upward stroke the hoods 8 which are disposed below the plane fragmentary sectional view hood 8 is disposed above will have the same effect upon the liquid. 7 In 7 11, the former being preferably circular,
while the latter are radially disposed elongated tapered openings, the restricted portions of said openings being disposed toward the axis o'f'the disk.
- 11 provide for the passage of a vertical column of the liquid, which acts against the column passing through the angularly disdition the restricted inner ings 11 cause the liquid to pass through at posed passa e to counteract the tendency of the latter co umn to rotate the disk. In adends of theropenthis point with more force than at the opposite larger ends of the openings, so that the column of liquid passing therethrough will be directed toward the periphery of the disk, cooperating to thoroughly mix the liquid, and to .cause more rapid separation of the butter fat.
In Fig. 7 is shown a modified form of the invention, in which the blades or wings are arranged in paths along each edge of the Gopiesof this patent may be obtained'for five cents each, by addressing the v Washington, D, G.
' at anacuteangle, the upper These openings 10 and portions the said blades extending upwardly and downwardly and designated by the reference character 12, while the lower blades are shown at 13. This construction provides oppositely disposed angularly passages along each edge of the portions 3, onepassage tending to counteract the rotary effect of the adjacent passage.
p A churn dasher comprising'a disk having central, peripheral and radially disposed portions lying in the same plane, said 'radially disposed portions having. openings therein, larly disposed blades provided along each edge of the radially disposed portions, said blades being arranged in radially alined pairs and. extendingin opposite directions to form opposite angularlydisposed passages between each of the radially disposed portions-and cone shaped hoods provided upon the central portion and disposedsome above and others below the larger ends of the hoodsbeing, disposed out wardly and open.
