UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
BANCROFT A. BAILEY, OF WHEATON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,511, dated July 16, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BANOROFT A. BAILEY, of Wheaton, in the county of Du Page and `State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention consists in a hollow rotating drum or cage to contain the clothes, mounted in a body or Water-tank, and provided with a removable door or section, secured thereto in a novel manner, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a'longitudinal vertical section through my machine, and Fig. 2 is a J[op-plan view of the same.
In constructing my machine I rst provide a body or Water-tank, A, supported on suitable legs, and mount therein a horizontal rotating drum or cage, B, having its surface composed of slats, with openings between them to `admit the Water, and to one of `Jthe journals of the drum attach a crank, O, by which to turn it. The drum I provide on one side with a detachable door or section, D, to admit of the introduction and removal of the clothes or other articles. To the ends of the door or section D I secure blocks e, and to the ends of the drum attach swinging stirrups or loops E, arranged so as to lock over the blocks e and hold the door or section rmly in place. To prevent the door from slipping laterally the drum is provided with dowel-pins t', tittin g into the door, as shown. To prevent the stirrups from slipping 011' accidentally I provide each of the blocks @with a button or latch, f, Which may be turned np outside of the stirrups, as shown in Fig. 1. When the drum is to be opened the buttons f are turned down flush with the edges of the blocks e, and then the stirrups' slipped oft' so as to release the door or section, which may then be removed.
In using the machine, the articles to be Washed are placed in the drum, the drum closed, and the body lled With Water, and then the drum rotated by the crank. The stirrups, arranged as described, serve to hold the removable section firmly in place and prevent it from being forced off by the mass of articles which are thrown against it during each revolution of the drum,While at the same time they permit the section or door to be easily and quickly detached when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- TheWashing-machine, consisting of the body A, and the hollow drum B provided With the removable section D, stirrups E, and buttons f, all constructed and arranged to operate as described.
