Be it known that I, MAsoN 1D. Cowman, a citizen of the United States, residin at Florence, in the county of Final and itate of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can lPerforators and Covers. of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a cover for cans containing food stuffs and is more particularly adapted for use on condensed mllk cans, evaporated cream cans. and similar cans, which merely require perforations in one end thereof for the purpose of dispensin the contents thereof.

he primary object of the invention is to provide a removable cover which is adapted to fit over one end of the can and punch the perforations so that either one may be used to pour the contents from the can. the device being adapted to be held in position so that .the perforations will be closed when the can is not in use whereby the contents of the can will be protected.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof ref erence is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, which 2- Figure I is a side elevation of the invention showing its manner of application to a can, lines.

Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views an annular band 1 is adapted to fit around the exterior of the can at one end thereof and is of comparatively short length so that only a portion of one end of the can is embraced. Mounted on one end of this band is a ca 2 which consists of the top circular plate 3 aving an annular flange t at its outer marginal edge, this annular demo 4 being adapted to embrace one end of w it t ular band 1. At dietrically the latter being illustrated by dotted opposite points, the flange 4 is provided withscrew threaded tended the screw threaded studs fingers 6 which have their terminals curved inwardly toward the band 1 so that they may be received in depressions 8 formed at, diametrically opposite points on the band 1. The top plate 3 of the cap 2 is provided with punchers 9 each of which consists of a spur 10 having a restricted neck portion 11 and a relatively short tapered shank 12 which is rigidly wedged into the plate 3 so that the puncher is held in the proper position. Each; punch projects into the space beneath the plate 3 at diametrically opposite points within the can when in position.

The restricted neck portion 11 is provided with a washer 13 which rests upon the top of the can when the spurs 9 have been forced into the top thereof. The fingers 6 are for the purpose of retaining the cap 2 and the annular band I in their proper relative positrons since it will be noted that the members 6 may be swung on the studs 5 to cause the curved terminals to disengage the recesses 8 whereupon the cap may be removed from the annular band. In use, the device as illustrated in Fig. 2'will be laced upon the end of the can and forced partly downwardly until the punchers provide the perforations in the can at diametrically opposite points, this will facilitate removal of the contents since one hole will serve to pour the milk while the other will permit the air to enter the can to permit the flow to be continuous. When the can is to be set aside or packed away for future use, the cap will bereplaced and the fastening elements will be swung on the stud 5 until the ends thereof engage the recesses 8 whereupon the cap will be held suiiiciently snug to prevent casual or accidental displacement and since the washers on the restricted portions of the punchers will surround the perforations in the end of the can it will be obvious that no leakage Will occur and the contents of the can will be thoroughly protected.

The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might beconsidered to be the preferred or approved form of my invention. I desire it to be understoodthat I may make such changes in the construction combination and arrangement of parts, materials dimensions et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.

1. A device of the character described comprising a removable annular band havin a cap mounted thereon and removable with the band, punchers carried b the cap and means carried by the cap an enga eable with the band to releasably hold t e cap in engagement with the said band.

2. A device of the character described comprising a cap having depending spurs provided at diametrical y opposite points, an annular band, and rotatablefastening devices carried by the cap and adapted to engage and disengage the said band to releaswbly hold the said cap in position on the band.

3. A device of the character described comprising an annular band rovided at diametrically opposite points with recesses, a cap mounted on one end of the band and provided with spurs dependin into the space embraced by the said banii, and feetemng devices carried by the cap and adapted for reception in the said recesses to mamtam the said cap in position on'the end of the band for preventing displacement of the said punchers.

4. A cover adapted for mountin on the end of a can, comprising an annufitr band adapted-to embrace one end of the can, a cap removably mounted on the end of the band and provided with spurs adapted to perforate one end of the can, and fastening devices carried b the cap and adapted to engage the annu ar band to maintain the said cap in position on one end of the can.
