Protecting Safes Against Fires.
Patented July 16, 1872.

PATENT QFFICE;
STEPHEN MARTIN, OF GHILLICOTHE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROTECTING SAFES AGAINST FIRE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,484, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing new and useful Improvements in Protecting Safes Against Fires, invented by STEPHEN MARTIN, of Ohillicothe, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois.
My invention consists in suspending safes, by means of a hinged metal platform or bars and wooden bars connected therewith, in such a manner that when the latter burn the safe will fall into the bottom of a vault, where it may be protected from undue heat, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safe and part of the floor of a building, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the floor and front elevation of the safe, and one arrangement of supporting apparatus. Figs. 3 and 4. are details of some of the supporting apparatus.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A hole will be made in the floor over the vault as large as the safe, and by preference a platform, A, will be arranged in said hole for the safe to rest on, and this platform will rest on any kinds of bars, 0 or a door or other contrivance, hinged at one end or side, and held up at the other end by wood bars E with notched ends, on which they latch, said bars E extending along up to the top of the safe, and held thereat by a bar of wood, F, arranged across the top, and temporarily holding them by headsGr in notched ends H, or in any other manner, so that they will be sufficiently secure until fire occurs, when it is designed that their connections shall fail as quickly as possible, when the fire comes in contact, and let the safe down. I may, however, have the levers or bars 0 held up by cords of flax or other substance loosely woven, so as to burn quickly; or the cords may be charged with oil or anything to facilitate the burning.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 The combination, with the safe, of the supporting metal bars 0 and wood bars E E, said bars 0 being hinged to the floor at one end and sustained by the wood bars E E at the other end, substantially as specified.
STEPHEN MARTIN.
