COLLAPSIIBLE MOLD.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS SELFERD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Molds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to molds, and isa device of this character adapted for molding cement and concrete .blocks to be used for building purposes.
Its principal object is to provide a device of this character in which the blocks can be molded in pairs, the individual blocks of each pair existing in spaced relation to each other, thereby providing a building block which, when used with other similar blocks, will make a wall which has an air space between its two faces.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mold for casting the aforesaid blocks, so that they may be adapted for use in straight walls and in corners.
A still further object is to provide a mold which may be completely collapsed when not in use.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a collapsible core for the mold which core fills the space which becomes the air space between the pair of finished blocks.
A still further object is to provide a device of the kind mentioned which is simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Still further and other objects will appear as the invention is set forth in detail in the following description. l
The drawings illustrate and the specification describes a particular embodiment of the invention but to this embodiment it is not to be restricted. Continued use in practice may make manifest certain desirable changes or alterations and the right is claimed to make any which do not deviate from the scope of the subjoined claims.

, Referring to the drawings, the mold is shown as comprising a base plate 1 with the upstanding side walls 2 and 3 and the end walls 4. The several walls stand upwardly from the base plate and surround the latter on its perimeters. The side walls 2 and 3 have formed on their inner face and adjacent their ends, V-shaped depressions 5, the two depressions on opposite walls cooperating to form substantially a V-slot. The ends of the end walls are beveled to conform to these V-shaped depressions so that the end walls may be connected each with two opposite side walls by having their beveled ends engage the V- shaped depressions.
As a means for securing the side and end Walls together, there are provided hasps 6 which are hingedly attached to the side walls adjacent their ends and swing around in front of the end walls, the latter being provided with fastening devices 7 which engage the hasps and lock them to the end walls after they have been brought into contact with the latter. j
The base plate 1 may be omitted, if there is a suitable level surface on which to assemble the several walls, but if there is not, the use of the base plate is essential, so that there may be a level base on which to cast the blocks, for which this invention is designed.
Positioned within the walls just referred to, there is a core block which operates as the spacing medium between the blocks formed in the mold. This core block comprises two plates 8 which are wedged-shape in cross section and which are formed in sections that are interconnected by means of tion in the holes 26 formed therein.

The two plates are adapted for attachment to each other and when they are in "use as a spacing member between the blocks being cast, the plug members are with the eye-members 9 just referred to.
Thus the several eye-members 9 and the eyemembers 11, when the plug members are inserted between the plates 8, provide for the assembling of the plates and plug members by means of a rod member 12 which passes through the eye-members and which at one end is provided with a right-angled bend 13,
by which it maybe inserted and withdrawn from the eye-members.
I The two plates are so proportioned that, when the plug members 10 are between them and their thicker longitudinal edges are together, the distance between the outer faces of the two at their thicker edges is the same asthe distance between the outer faces of the two at their thinner edges. Thus when the plug members 10 are withdrawn, the core may be collapsed by bringing together the thinner; edges of the two plates 8.
Onthe inner faces of the end walls a; and medially disposed between the beveled edges thereof, there are formed dove-tail slots 16. The core plate is designed to be attached to theend walls by means of this dove-tail slot and'tor this purpose, the dove-tail tenons 15 are'formed at the free ends of the core plate. These tenons correspond in cross section to the cross section of the clove-tail slots.
The core plate as a whole comprises two sections, one of which is about one-fourth of the length of the other and the two sections are interconnected by a double dovetail bar17, whichengages corresponding dove-tail slots l t formed on the interconnecting' ends of the two sections. The length of this bar is substantially the same as the height of the walls of the mold, the core plate when in position being also of the same height as the mold.
v The side wall 3 is provided with a dovetail slot'lS which is identical with the dovetail slot 16 and one of the plates of the smaller section of the core plate is provided with a dove-tail slot 19. The slots 19 and 18 are provided so thatthe smaller section of the core plate may be detached from'the larger section and the, end of the smaller sectionmade to engage the slot 18 and the bar 17 made to engage the slot 19 This provision of making the core plate in two sections so as to shift the position of the smaller section is for the purpose of casting the straight block and the end block shown in Figs. 6 and 7 respectively.

In the construction of the core, the manner of attaching itsseveral parts is the same in both sections, each'sectionbeing identical with the other except in the matterot length.
In Fig. 9, there is shown a plate 30to' be used for filling the dove tail'slot 16 on one of the end walls, orthe dove-tailslot 18 in the .side wall '3, this plate, of course,

These recesses 20 are-provided for the purpose of receiving the tie rods 21,- so that the lat-tor may be held intheir proper relative position while the cement or concrete is being cast around them.-
In Fig. 6, there isshown a spaced block comprising two cement or concrete units (the two interconnected units being considered one block). In castingsuch a block, the core is attached between the two end walls e and the two sections'of the former are interconnected at their ends. The'mold is then filled on both sides: of the core. After the material is set, the side walls are dropped downout' of position by disconnecting the hasps 6 from theend walls. The rod member l2is then'withdrawn, leaving the plug members 10 loose to be disconnected from between'the two'plates 8. The end walls are then'remov'ed by" disengaging the dove-tail slots 16 from the dove tail tenons l5. The'two plates 8"may then be loosened from the block by 'pressing'their' thinner upper edges toward each other, the two sections of the core having first been separated by the withdrawal of the double dove-tail bar 17 to permit the upper edges of the plate 8 to be pressed'toward for corner work. In casting this block, the c core is arranged so that the tenon 15 of its shorter section engages the dove-tail slot 18 and this section is connected with the longer section by having the bar 17 engage the (love-tail slot 19 and the slot 14: in the end of the longer section. The core when arranged in this manner is substantially L-shape in plan and the pouring of the material-in the mold between the walls thereof and the core results in the formation of a block like that shown in Fig. 7 consisting of an L-shape cement block 23 and a shorter block 21, the latter being interconnected with the former by the tie rods 21, and this latter block standing in spaced relation to both lugs of the L-shape block.
It will be observed that the block shown in Fig. 6 is adapted for use on straight walls, while that shown in Fig. 7 is adapted for use in corner work, thus walls may be built by the employment of said blocks, so that an air space will intervene between the inner and outer faces of the walls. Each air space will serve to efi'ectively preclude dampness.
It will be further observed that the particular arrangement of the core into sections, capable of being assembled longitudinally provides for the casting of the straight blocks shown in Fig. 6 in batteries, so that a whole layer of blocks may, in the building of a wall, be cast with one setting of a multiple of the cores assembled longitudinally, it being only necessary in such an employment of the invention to omit the end wall t where one of the molds connects with an adjacent mold and to provide for the interconnection of the cores in the manner in which the sections of the two plates 8 are interconnected, such as by pins 25 and holes 26.
In Fig. 8 there is shown a solid core 27, divided longitudinally into sections which interconnect by pins 25 held in one section which engage holes 26 formed in the other section, this manner of connection being identical with the manner of connecting the two sections of the plates 8. That section of the core 27 which carries the pins 25 is, as is the collapsible core, provided with transverse recesses 20 adapted for holding the tie rods 21.
The core 27 has a dove-tail tenon 29 for engagement with one of the dove-tail slots 16 and carries on its opposite ends, a dovetail slot 26 for engagement with the double dove-tail bar 17.
This solid core 27 is adapted for use in place of the collapsible core, when it is so desired.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A mold of the character described comprising side and end walls and a sectional core plate having certain of its sections designed for connection in alinement with or at an angle to the remaining sections, the core plate connecting with certain walls of the mold, whereby there may be cast building blocks consisting of units standing in spaced relation to each other.
2. A mold of the character described comprising side and end walls detachably connected together, and a sectional core plate certain of whose sections may be connected either in alinement with or at an angle to the remaining sections, the core late being connected with the two end wal s when its sections are in alinement and connected to an 'end wall and a side wall when its sections are at an angle to each other, whereby there may be cast, so that they stand in spaced relation to each other, building blocks adapted for straight walls and for corners.
3. A mold of the character described comprising side walls, end walls detachably connected to the side walls, the end walls and one side wall having dove-tail slots formed on their inner faces, a core plate composed of two sections, so that the core plate may be connected between the two end walls, either section having a dove-tail tenon for engaging a dove-tail slot, and means for connecting the two sections of the core plate together.
4. A mold of the character described comprising side walls, end walls detachably connected to the side walls, the end walls having beveled side edges, the side walls having V-shape depressions at their ends, hasps hingedly connected on the side walls, devices on the end walls for connecting with the hasps, and a detachable core having means for connecting with certain of the walls.
5. A mold of the character described comprising side walls, end walls detachably connected to the side walls, the two end walls and one side wall having dove-tail slots formed therein, a sectional core plate comprising one relatively long section having a dove-tail slot in its end and a short section also having a dove-tail slot in its end and a dove-tail slot on one side, and a double dove-tail bar for interconnecting the two sections of the core, whereby the smaller section may be placed in alinement with or at right angles with the longer section, the free ends of the two sections being provided with dove-tail tenons for engagement with the dove-tail slots of the side and end walls.
6. A core comprising two plates wedgedshape in cross section, eye-members secured to each of the plates on their thinner longitudinal edges, core plugs tapering in thickness and designed for insertion between the wedged-shape plates at their thinner edges, eye-members attached to the thicker edges of the core plugs and so positioned as to aline with the aforesaid eye-members, and a in thickness and designed for insertion berocl member sliclably engaging all of said tween the wedged-shape plates at their thineye-1nembers ner edges, and means for connecting the 10 7.
