erreur oni-erom VALVE OR, TAPPETI ADJUSTXNG DEVICE.
Application led October 3.
To all whom. t may concern:
lie it known that l. llounr lV. lilixxixo, a citizen of the 'United States. residing at Riverside. in the county of Providence and State of Rhode lsland. have invented a new `and useful improvement in Valve or Tappet Adjusting Devices. oi' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a valve or tappetJ adjusting device, and it has for its primary object to provide a device attachable either to the lower end of the valve stem or the top of the tappet for eiieeting a closer relation between the tappet and valve to eliminate pounding in the engine.
Thev invention consists broadly in a holder that is adjustably mounted on the lower end of a valve stem or the upper end of a tappot. which holder is provided with a bottom wall constituting a bearing surface., a wedge interposed between the bottom wall or" the holder and the holder carrying element. and
means for urging the 'Wedge inwardlyv across the bottom wall to always maintain a close relation between the latter and the element which is not sup orting the holder.
The invention 'nrther consists `in the fea tures o1 constructionand the ar `angeinents and combinations oi parts hereinafter specifically,Y described and si'iccintl)Y claimed, reference being had ltothe accompanying drawing wherein- T Figure l is a side elevation of the irn-` proved device applied to the lower end of a valve stern.
n ig. 2 is a horizontal section on lino 2-2 of Fig. l, showing the adjusting device in plan. l
Fig. 3 is a vertical section therethrough.
Fig. 1lis an end elevation of the device in its operative position, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan thereol.`
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing. the numeral i. designates either the lower end of a valve stem or a tappet, the latter of which may be of that type disclosed in the patents to B. W. Manning.

slide ot Wedge to pressure for urging the latter longitudimillxY on its support. i
The holder preferably formed of sheet metal bent into U Jform and disposed horizontally about the lower end of the stem 1. a bolt passing through the arms G and eooperating with a nut 7 to contract or release said arms. the metal from which the holder is formed possessing suflicient resilien'e)Y for such purpose. The lower edges -of 'the holder are intnrned to provide ledges S which constitute a bottom wall that extends across the lower end of the valve stein and is preferably beveled or inclined, as depicted in Fig. 3.
lhe wedge member is supported by the Y bottom wall 8 for sliding across the lower end ot' Ithe stein l, the side walls or arms serving as guide means for the wedge. The *forward or attenuated end of the .wedge projects through a slotI 9. provided at the rear ot' the holder and defined at its lower edge by the bottoni wall 8 and the rear end of said wedge is formed with a seat l() which en gages one end or terminal of the coiled spring 4.
The coiled spring encireles the screw bolt- 'and has itsopposite end hooked over the adjacent side wall of the holder. Consequently, when the nut 7 is loosened the spring will be free to force the wedge inember across the bottom wall and project it farther through the slot 9. Such move nient oit' the wedge will, therefore, cause the bottoni i'all to be further spaced from the end face oi the valve stem or in other words effect a sliding of the holder along the stein in a downvard direction.
To guide the holder durin such sliding action and to also lock the lgiolder against free rotative movement, the upper ed e of the holder is provided with a pair o diametrical slots 1l adapted to receive the pin 12 which is employed to hold the valve seating spring on the stem, said spring being` omitted in the present showing. The 'forward slot 11 is delined by the opposing ends ot a pair of lingers 13 bent inwardly from the side arms or Walls of the holder, thus giving the upper portion of the latter a eir- `cular cross sect/ion, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
1i operation, the holder is mounted either on the tappet engaging end of the Valve stein or the steinLengaged part of the tappet, as slio\\'n,`\vith the wedge member initially lll() disposed in a retracted position, as depicted in Fig. l, and bearing against the stem end. As' wear takes place between the stein and tappet, or, as in the Vpresent instance, loetween the bottom wall 8 and the tappet, the nut 7 is unscrevved to )ermit the spring sliding; the wedge inwarldly across the bottom wall and eli'ect down movement of the holder -`to taleup the space between the tappet and valve steni The action of the spring` on the wedge may he znade entirely automatic by leaving the nut loosened so that the sides of the holder do not bear or hind on the wedge, if suoli action is desired.
It will therefore loe noted that the wear is automatically `or otherwise tal-:en un as it occurs and that any possibility ot pounding will he entirely eliininated. The terms valve stem or steni7 are used in their hroadest sense in the foregoing description and the following claims to include also the tappet when the model or construction.l of the engine is such as to preventthe mountina` oi the device on the valve stein.
Having thus described my invention, what .l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. 1n combination with a valve steun a holder adjustabh` carried by the tappeteng'aging end of the steinxand comprising` a sheet metal bodyy bent into ll-'lform and horizontally disposed in straddliug relation to the stem, means connectinff the arms or' the U-holder for creating a. Irictional grip on the stem, a wedge member slidahlv snpported across the specified end of ll a stein in Contact therewith, and a spring` for urging the Wedge across the end olf the valve stem. i
In an adjusting' device, a holder oil lliorm adapted to embrace the tappct engaging end of a. valve stem, the lower edges el' the holdeiheing inturned across the stem. end, a Wedge nieinbecslidably supported. by the inturned edges against the specified end of the valve stein, and means for movingl the Wedge across the lattern medina 3. in adjusting device comprising a helder having its lower edges inturned, a Wedge member slidably supported by the inturned edges, and a coiled spring carried by the holder and having one terminal portion bearing against the adjacent end of the ywedge to move the latter in its inountino'.
el. An adjusting device comprising a holder slidably supported on a valve stein and 'formed with vertical slots ior receiving the spring supporting pin of said stem, the lower edges of the holder being intiirned across the end of the stein, the iaces of the inturned edges that oppose the stem end being inclined transversely thereof, and a spring pressed edging member slidablv supported by the int-urned edges ot the holder.
An adjusting' device romprising a holder of U-form adapted to embrace the lower end of a falve stein, the upper edge ot the holder being provided with vertical slots adapted to receive the springY holding pin oi: the stein for guidance, and the lower tit edge ol? the holder heine,` inturned 'from onposite sides, the upper t'aces of the intnrned edges being beveled, a wedge member slidably supported on the inturned edges. a screw holt connecting," the arms ot' the U- holder, anda coiled spring encircling the holt and having one terminal hearing against the wedge member to urge it across the inturned edges.
5, Stn adjustinw device comprising a holder adapted to ne mounted on the tappeten ragiiig,u end ol2 a valve stein and provided with a bottom wall opposing the end ol? the stem, and a wedge member slidahly snpported hy the bottoni wall for movement hctiveen the latter and the end of a valve stein.
ln testimonyv whereot' l have signed niv naine to this specification in the presence et' two snbserihing witnesses.
