.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Winnmir A... Smm, a, citizen ofthe United States, residing; at Denver, in the county of Denver and State oColorado, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Rock-Drills, of which the following` is a speciiioation.
The present invention relates more particularly to rock drills of the hammer piston type, this application being a division oi' Serial No. 137,363, filed December i6, i916.
The primary object of the invention is to provide novel mechanism of a simple and practical character for delivering cleansing fluid to the drill bit, Said means 'being under the constant control ci the operator, and furthermore coactingwith the means for ,governing the supply of motive iiuid to the drilling motor.. v
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a structure ernbodying the present inn vention.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale of the cleansing luid controlling means.
Similar reference numerals designate correspondingr parts in all the g'ures oi the drawings. j
In the embodiment-illustrated the motor consists of a barrel or cylinder member 3, within which reciprocates a piston @e having an extension 5 of vless diameter than die piston proper.' Thisypiston is ci the type, the extension 5 operating on a drill hit 6 detachably' located in a rotatable chuck l and having a rbore 8 therethrough, said here providing` means for conducting' cleansing fluid to the lloottonu of the drill hole. rihe drilling motor is ci' the so-called valveless type, fthe piston constituting the means igor controlling' the distribution oij the motive fluid to actuate said piston.
It is believed to be' unnecessary for the purposes of the present inventionto go into a detailed description of the motor, as the same is fully disclosed in the shove iden ilied application. It is sufficient to Isay that this motive fluid, is supplied to the' piston chamber by apassageway 9 leadingg to ports and channels controlled by the piston hammer. The exhaust takes piace throughjiu jpassagevvayy l0 having ports li alternately covered and uncovered. by the ends of the piston upon its reciproeation.
For the purpose of supplying motive fluid llLCllU der memier, the piston Foei `1; hollowed out,
i6, to accommodate said exas shown at tension.
Slide bly mounted in the rear head and in the socket of the extension 15 is a tuloular neck 17 which carries a handle 18. The handle is provided With a lateral inlet passageway 194 to which may loe coupled the communication With the bore il@ of the neck 17, which neck `has its inner end open, and is thus in communication with the socket oi the extension l5. The said neck furthermore is provided with a lateral port 2l that is mov-able into 'communication with the passageway il when the handle is moved t0- ward the motor, said vport being closed when the handle is in its outermost position. It `will thus he seen that when the handle is pushed forward tue port 21 will be brought into communication with the passageway 14:, so motive fluid supplied to the passage way 19 will into the motor to operate the same.
The piston hammer 'i and its extension is provided with a longitudinal axial bore 22 alined and communicating' with the 'bore 8 of the drill feit. Fluid under pressure is delivered to the llore 22 and consequently to the here 8 means 'of a conducting tube 23, rear end of which is slidahly mounted the handle i8, said tube passing through the nbore 550 oi the neck i? into the bore The* tuile has a rear closed end and is provided with a lateral port S/i that is mov# able into and out oi communication with the duid supply passage i99 accordingly as the tube is moved forwardly and backwardly in the handle member. The mounting for this tute includes `a plus; .25 through which said todos slidehly passes and against which itis usual hose line, and this passageway is in arranged toa-but to limit its outward movement. The 'rear end of the tufbe is -provided with a thumb or finger piece 26 arrangedV within the Vhandle in convenient relation to be pressed upon by the operator, and a spring 27 is interposed'between the lin er piece and the plug 25,-this spring as will e evident, holdingr the tube in its rearmost po.-
sition, with the port :24 'thereof out of communication withy 'the passageway` 19.-
4When the handle is pressed forwardly,
` the tube will, ofcourse move 'forwardly with 'ift and motive fluid, as already explained,
will be delivered to. the` drilling motor. Whemthe tube 23 is pressed with-respect to the handla'the'port 24 therein is brought into communication with the passageway 19, and consequently fluid under pressure can enter the tube 23 and discharging from the 22 into the bore 8 of the drill bit;
The operation of this tube is not depend- :front end thereof will pass through the bore lent at all upon themanipulation of the v handle. That is to say, the cleansing fluid can be caused to flow into the drill bit irrespective of-the position of the handle, and
whetheror notvit is in a position to deliver motive fluidto the drilling motor.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construct-ion, operation and many advantages of thel herein described .invention will be a parent to those skilled'in the art, With-f out t rther description, and it 4will be under- Vstood that various changes in the size, shape,
proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing -Afrom the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad- -vantages .of ythe invention. l
Havin thus fully described my invention,
