Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT curios.
WILLIAM s. sen-Ans, or BROOKLYN, AND WYA T w. TAYLOR, OFSPUYTEN DUYVIL,
NEW Yonx.
COATING MATERIAL FOR HANDLES OF SPORTING AND TRADE IMPLEMENTS AND METHOD OF APPLYING SAME.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. SnLLARs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and WYATT W. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spuyten Duyvil, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Coating Material for Handles of Sporting and Trade Implements and Methods of Applying Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved grip material or coating for all sporting or trade implements It is applicable to all handled articles, such for example as golf clubs, ball bats, tennis rackets, garden and farm implements, steering wheels or any other implements of commercial or private use.
A leading object of the invention is to provide and apply to a handle or grip surface a specially compounded material having properties of elasticity, adhesiveness, nonabsorptiveness, permeability, durability and the particular property of being easily and quickly applied.
Another object is to provide an improved grip solution, that will adhere to all kinds of surfaces or materials and will present a nonfatiguing surface to the hands, in that the whole body of the material after drying is of such a highly elastic and yielding nature that it readily moves slightly under the hands and thus conforms to the shape of the hands and fingers without taking a set form and thereby perfectly adapts itself to every slight change in pressure or position of the operators hands.
Another object is to provide a grip coating that can be easily and quickl applied over any other grip material alrea y on handles without any particular preliminary preparation, the coating being applied in solution, preferably by immersion; it immediately permeates every crevice and all pores of leather, cloth or other fibrous grips al- Specification of Letters Iatent.
and method of applying same.

ready on the handles and dries into an elastic, non-absorptive grip as described.
It is applicable to Wood or metal surfaces and will adhere to any material used in the arts and industries and while we have described it as particularly applicable to grips of sporting and trade implements, the material is in every way as suitable for a coating on either flat or irregular surfaces where a coating is desired that is highly elastic, yielding, non-absorptive, plication.
The coating material which is the subject of this invention is prepared by combining gutta percha and balata rendered liquid by a suitable solvent. We have found from experiment that a proportion of about one half gutta percha and one half balata with a solvent produces a composition that wears Well and 1s very elastic and yielding under the grip of the hand and does not become sticky or tacky from the heat of the hand while in use.
A preferable method of applying this solution to handles of golf clubs, for example, is by simple immersion. The material is placed in a suitable vessel and the grip end of the club immersed therein; if it already has a leather or other grip, this is not removed, as these old grips usually make an excellent base for the new grip, and as the gutta grip wears away from constant use, another immersion will renew the grip and keep it in good condition. This can be repeated indefinitely, it not being necessary to remove the worn gutta grip in order to renew it. This last is a feature not enjoyed by any other grip coating now known to the applicants and constitutes one of the important features of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, .what Weclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A coatin for the handles of sporting and trade imp emcnts, comprising material, includin gutta-percha and balata, soluble in a suitab e solvent and when applied to the durable and easy of aphandle of such implement readily drying out free'from stickiness under ordinary temperaand leaving said material in the form of 2m tures of use. adherent, elastic, non-absorptive surface free Signed this 27th day of August, 1914, in from stickiness under ordinary temperatures the presence of two Witnesses.
