ATTACHMEIN '1 FOR GAS-DRUMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed April 18, 1918. 7 Serial No. 229,400.
valve for gas drums, is more particularly directed to the provision of a simple and inexpensive means for preventing the freezing of the regulating valve by the discharging gas, such means being preferably shown in the form of a casing partially inclosing the valve and provided with means for heating the same. One object of the invention is the provision of a simple means for maintaining a uniform temperature at the regulating valve. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a gas drum provided with a regulating valve and having heating means attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a similar view, but omitting the greater part of the gas drum and showing the regulating valve partially inclosed in an open casing, to which the heating means is attached; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through a modification of the device shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4, and is a transverse vertical section of a further modified form of my device.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a gas drum 1, which is of the usual construction largely used for holding nitrous oxid and other highly compressed gases for use'in hospitals and other places. Attached laterally to the top of the gas drum is a conduit 2, which extends to a gas regulating valve shown as inclosed in a substantially cylindrical casing 3 and operated by a hand wheel 4. The gas passes through this regulating valve and out through the conduit 5 and through a second controlling valve operated by a hand wheel 6. As the gas expands in passing through the regulating valve, which is usually in the form of a diaphragm or disk provided with a small aperture therein, the effective size of which may be controlled by the hand wheel, the gas becomes very cold as it gives up its heat in the expansion to that portion of the gas which passes through this opening. This decrease in the temperature of the gas freezes what moisture there is in the gas, of which there is always some, and forms a film of snow on the diaphragm and around the edges of the valve opening, and in a very short time effectively closes this opening. If the regulating valve is opened to its full extent the discharge ofthe gas therethrough will be intermittent, since after some gas has passed through the opening will be closed by the freezing of the opening, which then will have to thaw out before any other gas passes out. For this reason, as stated, the discharging of the gas will be intermittent and will be interrupted every few minutes for a short time, due to th freezing or closing of the opening in the regulating valve. This is an extremely objectionable feature of such a device, as at the time when the gas may be needed most it suddenly ceases to flow and the regulating valve must be thawed out before any further discharge can be secured. It is this objectionable feature the present invention is intended to overcome.
In Fig. 1 the cylindrical casing, which contains the regulator valve, is provided with a threaded boss 7 extending downwardly from its lower side for the attachment of a small heating lamp 8. This heating lamp may be of any suitable type and may be operated with alcohol or other fuel, and is provided with a framework consisting of rods 9, which carry an internally threaded nipple l0 engaging over the boss 7. The flame of the lamp is inclosed by a gauze cylinder 11 to prevent explosion or combustion of any gases that may be in the atmosphere of the chamber in which the device may be in use. The operation of even such a small lamp as the one shown has been found to be sufficient to prevent any freezing in the regulating valve and to secure a constant and steady fiow of gas therethrough.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown another type of heating means, which consists of an open casing 12 in the form of an uncovered box, which is provided at each of two op posite sides with hooks 13, which; engage over the two opposite conduits 2 and 5 and maintain the boXes in a substantially-horizontal position below and partially inclosing the valve casing 3.- This casing 12 may be filled with water or any other suitable heat-- ing liquid to a sufficient depth to contact the casing 8, and a lamp 8,-such as is shown in Fig. 1 may'thenbe attached to a stud 1i disposed at the bottom'of the casing 12. Such a ,devicew-ill cause aneven closer regutheshape of the regulating valve casingB, being attached thereto by any suitable 7 means, such as lugs, and will bespaced ap at all points.
proximately a uniform distance therefrom This casing 15 isprovided with a stud 17-at its bottom, to which a lamp 8 maybe attached as in device already de scribed. Instead of b'eing formed as a part of, or attached to the valve casing' 3'in themanner shown, I this casing 13 may be mounted upon the conduits 2 and 5 by means of hoops similar to those usedfor forming the casing 11.
Other modes of applyingthe principle of I my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as- Gopies of this patent'may be obtained for cylindrical casing regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means'stated by any'of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. The combinationof a compressedgas regulating device, an open liquid contain ing casing attached thereto and inclosing the lower portion of said device, and a lamp attached to said casing and adapted to heat said casing and the liquid therein?" 2. The combinationofa compressed gas regulating device, provided with a threaded stud projecting downwardly therefrom, and l a lamp adapted to be removably-engaged on said stud and being also'adapted to heat said device. V,
3. The combination of a cylindrical com pressed gas regulatingv device, an'open semiconcentrically 1- spaced from and partially inclosing thelower'portion of said device, and a lamp attached to said casing and adapted toheat the-same.
4:; The combination of a-cylindrical-com= pressed gas regulating} device having-"con duits ext-ending laterally in opposite directions therefrom, an open semi -cylindrical casing provided with straps engaging over said conduits and supporting said casing concentrically and in a: spaced relation to said device, and a lamp-mounted on said casing and adapted to heat'jthefsamei- 5. The combination of a I compressed 1 gas regulating device and a lamp ad'apted to b'e: suspended adjacent said deviceandha-ving' a connection thereto, such connection being of heat-conducting material.
