INKING DEVICE FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it mayooncem:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. KOEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking Devices for Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is in the nature of inking devices for printing presses and has for its object to generally improve the construction and operation of such'mechanism, and with this object in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and afterward claimed.
In order that the construction and operation thereof may be readily comprehended, I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, and will now proceed to describe the same in connection with said drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a printing press showing my improved inking mechanism applied thereto,

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures, 1 indicates the side frames of the printing press, to the upper ends of which is attached an arch 2, having an ink containing fountain 3 at one side and between depending brackets 4 carried by the arch, and in order to regulate the flow of the ink from the fountain, a roller 5, preferably of steel, is mounted upon a shaft 6 rotatably mounted in said arch.
In order to control the flow of the ink from the fountain, a spring plate 7 is extended longitudinally of the fountain and attached at one edge to the wall thereof, the opposite edge resting adjacent the surface of the roller 5 and adjusted with respect to said roller by means of thumb screws 8. By moving the plate toward or from the roller, the amount of ink removed from the fountain by the roller will be regulated. In order to prevent leakage at the ends of the roller 5 washers 9 are introduced around the shaft 6 between the ends of the roller and the depending brackets, said washers being preferably constructed of felt, or similar material, such as will form a non-leakable joint.
The shaft 6 is provided at one end with a sprocket wheel 10 which carries a sprocket chain 11, which passes around a sprocket wheel 12 carried by the main driving shaft 13, said driving shaft being journaled in the side frames 1.
Mounted upon the'driving shaft 13 and adapted to oscillate thereon is a distributing roller-14, preferably of steel, said roller having a seat 15 for the reception of a feather 16 carried by the shaft 13, causing the roller 14 to rotate with the shaft but permitting it to oscillate thereon. Each end of the roller 14 is provided with a bevel end 17, the bevel at one end being parallel with the bevel at the opposite end, said bevel faces being engaged by screws 18 carried by the brackets 4, and adjustable whereby the longitudinal movement of the roller may beincreased or decreased as desired.
Mounted between the rollers 5 and 14 is a feed roller 19, preferably constructed of a composition, said roller being mounted on a shaft 20, the ends of which project through elongated slots 21 in the brackets 4 so that the roller 19 may be raised into engagement with the roller 5 to obtain a supply of ink and then descend into engagement with the roller 14 to deposit ink upon the roller 14, said roller 19 being likewise movable lengthwise for the better connection and distribution of the ink.
In order to oscillate the roller 19, a cam 22 is fixed to the driving shaft 13 at each end of the roller and between the side frames and depending brackets, said cams having cam faces 23 which engage the rounded ends 24 of the shaft 20 and as said cam faces are opposed to each other, the shaft, with the roller 19 will be moved lengthwise, in opposite directions as the cams rotate with the driving shaft.
The roller 19 is raised and moved into engagement-with the roller 5 by securing to the inner ends of the earns 22 elongated cross cams 25, the ends 26 of which are adapted to pass below the shaft 20 and engage and move the same upwardly until the roller 19 engages the roller 5, said ends holding the roller in an elevated position a predetermined time, when they pass frombelow the shaft and permit the roller 19 to descend by its own weight into engagement with, the roller let thereby distributing the'ink, gathered by rollers being preferably constructed of com position so as to properly distribute the ink over the type carried by the cylinder without injuring the type.
In operation, the fountain 3 is filled with ink and the plate 7 adjusted by means of the thumb screws 8 with'respect to the roller 5 to discharge the proper amountof ink from the fountain. When power is applied to the driving shaft 13, the roller 5 will be rotated and the ink will be spread in a thin coat around the roller depending. upon the adjustment of the spring plate 7. The rotation of'the cam and the cross cams carried thereby will result in raising the feed roller 19 into engagement with the roller 5 and by means of the oscillating movement of said roller, 19 the ink will be transferred from the roller 5 to said roller 19 and as soon as the cross cams 25 have passed from the shaft of the roller 19, said roller will immediatelydescend and engage with the distributing roller 14:, the ink carried by the roller 19 being in turn distributed over the surface of the roller it. The ink is then transferred from the roller 14 to the two auxiliary rollers 27 and from thence on to type carried by the cylinder 28 and by arranging the multiplicity of'rollers as shown, the ink will be supplied'to the type carried by the cylinder 28 in uniform thickness and consistency.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. In inking mechanism for printing presses, the combination of a main driving the beveled ends, bevel cams on the driving" shaft, cross eams adjacent to the bevel cams, a shaft journaled in a vertical slot above the driving shaft resting upon the cross cams and having its ends in contact with the bevel cams, a feediroller'on the last named shaft, above the distributing roller, an ink reservoir, an inking roller aboveand in vertical alinement with the distributing and feed rollers, and means for driving the inking roller from the main driving shaft.
2. In inkin'g mechanism for printing presses, the combination of a main driving shaft, a distributing-roller having reciprocating movement-loosely splined thereon, adjustable means carrie'd'by the frame for controlling the reciprocating movement of said distributing roller, an inking roller mounted above said distributing rollerand driven from said main shaft, a feed roller mounted for vertical movement between said distributing and inking roller, and means carried by the driving shaft for simultaneously reciprocating and raising and lowering said feed roller into and out of engagement with said inking and distributing rollers.
3. In inking mechanism for printing presses, the combination of'a main driving shaft, a distributing roller having reciprocating movement loosely splined thereon and provided with beveled ends,'anadjust able screw positioned through the 1 frame to contact with-said beveled ends to regulate the reciprocating movement of said distributing roller, an inking roller 'mounted above said distributing roller and driven from the main shaft, a feed'roller mounted in the frame for vertical movement, and means carried by the main shaft for simultaneously reciprocating and raising and lowering said feed-roller into and out of engagement with said inkin'giand distribute ing rollers.
