Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 19119.
Application filed November 28', 1917. Serial No. 20 45368.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, G s'rAv KoMARnK, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Material- Feeders for Briquet-Machines, of'which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and had to the accompany' g drawings,'form1ng part -of this specification. a
My invention relates generally to briquet machines and more particularly toan ap aratus for feeding the material from which the briquets are formed, directly to the briquet forming press or machine, and the particular type of feeder herein shown and described isdesigned for use in connection with the type of briquet machine disclosed in. my copending patent application filed February 5, 1918, Serial Number 215,445.
he briquet ing application just referred to includes a pair of cooperating rolls, the peripheries of which are provided with mold cavities and each roll being carried by a pair of pivoted frames or levers, and it is the principal object of my present invention to mount a material feeding box and feeding mechanism upon the roll carrying frames or levers so that the opening or outlet from said feedbox always occupies the same relative :position with respect to the periphery of the roll.
Further objects of my invention are, to
provide a comparatively simple and easily operated feediig mechanism which will be positive and e cient in performing its intende I functions; to provide simple means for accurately regulating the feed of the material from the box to the mold cavities in the periphery of the briquet forming roll, and further, to provide simple means for pressing the plastic material into the mold cavities, thereby insuring the filling of said mold cavities, which action is necessary to eflect the production of briquets, the bodies of which are of uniform density.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my-invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and mately on the line 33 of Fig.
press disclosed in my copend- .an outlet or feed 0p improved construction, the same being assoclated with the forming roll of a briquet press; Fig. 2 is an elevational view .taken looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 2 1n Fig. 1, wit parts in section;
ig. 3 is a vertical section taken approxi- 1g. 4 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
eferring by numerals tothe accompanying drawings, 10 designates one of the rolls of a briquet press, the same being mounted on a shaft 11, which latter 1s journaled in suitable bearings formed in a pair of substantially upright frames or levers 12, the latter bemg fulcrumed near their lower ends upon a horizontally disposed shaft (not shown). a
Located on the periphery of this roll is a series of rings 13 in which are formed mold cavities, and arranged between these rings are chains 14, the links of which serve as end walls forthe mold cavities. The links of these chains are substantially wider than the grooves between the mold rings 13; consequently said chains project a substantial distance beyond the peripheries of said rings. (See Fig. 3).
ixed in any suitable manner to the upper ends of the levers 12 is the upper part 15 of the feeding box said upper part being preferably cast in a single piece and comprising a pair of side walls and a pair of end walls.
Fixed in any suitable manner to-the lower portions of the walls of the box member 15 and depending therefrom is the lower part of the box, the same comprising a pair of side walls 16 and end The lower portion of the curved inwardly the lower portion of 18 is curved nated by 20. 1
The space between the lower ends of the inwardly curved portions 19 and 20 forms ening 21 and when the box is properly positioned on the levers 12,
end wall 17 is as designated by 19 and walls 17 and 18.
. wheel (not shown),
till
'journaled in suitable bearings said feedopening above the upper e (See-Fig.3.)
J ournaled in suitable bearings formed in the side walls 16 of the lower part of the box are shafts 22 and 23, said shafts extending through one of the levers 12 and being provided with meshing pinions 24. One of these shafts extends through the lever 12 on the opposite'side of the machine and is provided with a sprocket wheel 25 upon which operates a sprocket chain 26, the latter, passing around a suitable sprocket which is carried by the shaft on which the levers or frames 12 are fulcrumed. Those portions of the shafts 23 within the feed box areprovided with radially disposed fingers 27 which, when the device is in operation, serve to efiectively stir the briqueting material within the lower portion of said box same to feed evenly out through opening 21.
Arranged for horizontal sliding movement beneath the inwardly projecting portion 19 of wall 17 is a plate 28, the same being held for operation between suitable guides 29, and formed integral with the inner ed e of this plate is a series of fingers 30 whlch project into the spaces between is positioned directly dges of the chains 14.
withdrawn from chains with the result that the amount of material fed into the mold cavities of forming drum is very accurately regulated. Carried by the outer portion of plate 28 is a transversely disposed shaft 30 and loosely connected to the ends thereof are the lower ends of a pair of links 31. The upper ends of these links are fixed to the end portions of a rock shaft 32 which is 33 on the lower portion of wall 17. Fixed to one end of this rock shaft 32 is an upwardly projecting lever 34, the upper end thereof being bifurcated and terminating adjacent to the upper portion of box member 16.
Pivotally mounted on the upper portion of one of the side walls of box member 15 is the inner end of a horizontally disposed rod 35, and loosely mounted on the outer portion thereof is a collar 36 to which is pivotally connected the bifurcated upper'end of lever 34. Interposed between this collar 34 and the connection for the inner end of said rod is a com aratively stifi compression spring 37. T e outer end portion of rod 35 is threaded and screw-seated thereupon is a hand wheel 38 against which collar 36'normally bears.
Journaled in suitable bearings 39 on the lower portion of end wall 17 is a transversely disposed shaft 40 and fixed thereto in any suitable manner are depending links rollers occupy outer end of said rod is hand wheel 47 against which the and cause thethe ' highest pressure 41 in which are journaled the ends of a transverse shaft 42. Carried by this shaft 42 are rollers 43,- the peripheral portions of which extend into the spaces-between the chains 14 on the briquet forming roll 10.
Obviously, there are the same number of rollers 43 as there are teeth 30 on plate 28 and the corresponding pairs of teeth and the same vertical planes.
Secured to one end of shaft 40 is an upwardly projecting lever 44, the upper end being bifurcated and pivotallyconnected to a collar 45, which latter is on a rod 46. The inner end ofthis rod is pivotally connected to the upper portion of the side wall of the box member 15 and the threaded and receives a collar 46 normally bears. Interposed between collar 45 and the inner end of a rod 46 is a compression sprin 48.
When the press with w ich my improved feeder is associated is in operation, sprocket chain 26 is driven, thereby imparting rotary movementto one of the shafts 23, and this motion is transmitted to the other shaft through the gear Wheels 24. Thus the shafts 22 and 23 are rotated toward each other with the resultthat the stirring fingers 27 are operated within the lower portion of the box or container, and consequently, the material which is in plastic form will be fed downwardly through opening 21 and fill the mold cavities in the rings 13 and the spaces between chains 14.
Plate 28 provided with the fingers 30 can be moved toward or away from the pressure roll by proper manipulation of hand wheel 38, and thus the amount of material fedonto said roll can be very accurately re ulated.
he rollers 43 operating in tween the chains 14 press the material into the mold cavities, thereby insuring the proper filling of said cavities just rior to the time the briquets are subjected to the of the forming rolls, and by proper manipulation of the hand wheel 47, these rollers can be moved toward br away from the chain carrying roll 10. Thus it will .be seen that plate 28 performs the functions of a gate or scraper which may be readily adjusted to regulate the amount of material fed into the spaces between the chains and further, that the rollers 43 provide simple means for pressing the materia thus fed between said chains, into the mol cavities, and as a result of this accurate feed and the forcin of the material into the mold cavities, a l of the briquets formed between the rolls have practically the same density when finally compressed. This insures a uniform product and is effective in reducing to a minimum the breakage of briquets while being handled.
the spaces belid lib
opening, and pressing rollers associated with said conmea re It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction 0 the various parts of my improved feeder can be made and substituted for those heredescribed, Without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
