VALVE-GRINDING DEVICE.
State of Texas, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Grinding Devices, of which the following is a specifica- `tion.
My present invention relates generally to valve grinding devices, and more particularly to an arrangement whereby the several valves of a multi-cylinder engine or motor may be simultaneously ground, my object being the provision of a. simple, inexpen'slve apparatus, the structure of which provides for ready interchangeability, repair and ads justment of the working parts, as well as ready attachment of the device in operative posi-tion, and its removal therefrom.

Referring now to these gures, my invention contemplates the provision of a valve grinding apparatus which includes a suport in the formfof a U-shaped bracket 10, -aving upper and lower horizontal extensions 11 and 12, respectively, the latter of which is provided with openings for the reception of bolts 13 and the like, by means of which it may be rigidly secured upon an en gine or motor, a portion of which is seen at 14 in Fig. 1, adjacent to the line of valves 15. The upper extension 11 carries a rigid cross arm 16 adjacent its free end, and is also provided with an upright stud 17, to which is pivoted one end of an operating lever 18, having an intermediate longitudinal slot 19, for a purpose which will be presently described.

This shaft 25 is eX- tended vertically through openings in the upper and lower extensions 11 and 12 of the bracket 10, and oscillation thereof by movements of the operating lever 18 in opposite directions are transmitted through the connecting arms 23 and the several crank portions 22 to the various valve'grinding rods 21, whose lower ends have yokes and pins or other devices at 26 for engaging the several valves 15.
The valve grinding rods are furthermore held downwardly against the rods 15 in use, and under uniform pressure by virtue of a spring 27 coiled around each of the rods aud by a lower cross arm 30 if desired, throughA which the rods are extended, and in case this lower cross arm is utilized, 1t will be slotted in the same manner as previously described in connection with the cross arm 16, so that the several valve grinding rods may be individually or independently removed for purposes of repair or substitution of parts.
It is obvious therefore, that my invention provides for uniform engagement and pressure upon the various valves of a series thereof, as well as for simultaneous grinding movement, so that the process of regrinding the valves may be carriedout in a comparatively short space of time, and with minimum work.
It is obvious, furthermore, that my invention provides an extremely simple, inexpensive apparatus for the above purpose, which will be eifectivein use, and the moving parts of which may be readily detached for purposes of repair, adjustment and substitution.
I claim y 1. The combination of a vertical series of valve grinding rods having valve engaging means at the lower ends thereof, and having upper crank portions, of a supporting bracket, a cross arm carried by said bracket and in which theseveral rods arejournaled, a shaft journaled in the bracket and having an upper crank portion, connecting rods joining the crank portions of said shaft and said valve grinding rods,'and an operating lever pivoted on the bracket and en aging the crank portion of the said shaft or the purpose described. A valve grinding apparatus compri ing a support, a cross arm carried by thesupport, a plurality of valve grinding rods removably journaled in the said cross arm to oscillate therein, and having valve engaging means at one end, an operating lever pivoted on the support, means between theoperating lever and the opposite ends of said valve grinding rods for simultaneously oscillating the latter, and a spring adjacent each of said valve grinding rods engaged between a portion of the sanie and the said cross arm, as described.
3. A valve grinding apparatus comprising a U-shaped supporting bracket having upper and lower extensions, a rigid cross arm 'carried by the upper extension of the bracket and having a plurality of openings, and slots communicating with said openings, -a plurality of vertically disposed valve grinding rods journaled at their upper portions 1n the said openings and shiftable into and out of the same through said slots, said valve grinding rods having valve engaging means lat their lower ends, and having upper crank portions, the latter located above the cross arm, springs carried by the several rods,

A valve grinding apparatus comprising a'U-shaped supporting bracket having upper and lower extensions, a rigid cross arm carried by the uppereXtenSiOn of the bracket 40 and having a plurality of openings, and slots communicating with saidopenings, a plu-v rality of vertically disposed valve grinding rods journaled at their upper portions in the said openings and shiftable into and out of the saine through said slots, said valve grinding rods having valve engaging means at their lower ends, and having upper crank portions, the latter located above the cross arm, sprinf/s carried by the several rods and compresser. between portions thereof and the said cross arm, an operating lever pivoted upon the supporting bracket, ashaft journaled through the extensions ofl said supporting brackets and having upper crank portions and engaged by the operating lever, and connecting rods connecting the said crank portions of the shaft with the crank portions of the said valve grinding rods, as
described.
