The pump'l operates continuously in the operation 0f the engine 6 to raise gasolenc or other fuel liquid from a supply tank 20 preferably embedded in theV ground, and to deliver the fue-l thro-ugh a check valve pipe 21 to an overhead feed tank 22, from which the fuel is supplied through a conductor 23, by gravity or ,otherwise` to the carbureter 24 connected with the intake or intake manifold of the engine. The excess amount of oil supplied to the tank 22 drains back to the reservoir 20 through an overflow pipe 25, and a pipe26 is provided for filling the tank 2O whenever its replenishment is required.

A starting mechanism is provided for automatically starting the motor 6 when the water in the tank 4 falls below the required level and for throwing the starter out of action after the engine has reached a predetermined speed, so that the engine may keep working while the starter, having performed its function, is thrown out of operation, until the water is again pumped to the desired level, when the ignition circuit will be cut out and the motor brought to a stop. rlhis starting mechanism comprises a compressed air cylinder and piston 34 carried by a bracket 35 mounted to tilt in a vertical plane upon a fulcrum 36, the said piston being arranged to drive a starting gear 37, adapted by up and down pivotal movements of the starter to be thrown into and out of engagement with the gear teeth 8 of the engine fly wheel 7. The bracket 35 is connected with the piston member of an actuating cylinder and piston 38, whereby the starter may be raised to throw the gear 37 into mesh with the teeth 8, and held in such position by the pressure of air behind the lifting piston and until such pressure is relieved, when the starter tilts back by gravity to normal position.
Leading from a compressed air storage tank 39 is a main air supply pipe 40, from which leads a pipe 41 having a main controlling valve 42 therein and which is connected with a pipe 43 leading to the lifting cylinder 38, and from which leads a branch pipe 39 to the cylinder 34, which pipe 39 is preferably provided with a jointed section which accommodates itself to tho pivotal movements of the starter. The pipe 43 is provided at its juncture with the pipe 41 with arcontrolling valve 44 having an actuating arm 45 connected with the stein of a spring retracted piston 46 arranged. within a motor cylinder 47, connected by a pipe 48 with the pipe 41, so that when air is admitted to said cylinder 47 behind the piston the latter will be raised and actuate the arm 45 to open the valve 44, the air pressure maintaining the parts in such position until released. A controlling valve 49i is arranged at the `iunction of the pipes 41. and 48, and this valve is provided with a crank arm 50 coupled by a connecting rod or link 51 with the switch:V lever 3l, so that the valve 49 will be opened and closed simultaneously with the opening and closing of the admission circuit and by the switch lever 31. The pipe 43 is provided with a vent or relief outlet 52 having a vent or relief valve 53 therein, provided with a crank arm 54 coupled by a connecting vrod- 55 with one arm of a bell crank lever 56 connected with the stem of the valve 42, so that when the main valve42 is open for the supply of air to the starter cylinder 34 and starter lifter 38 the valve 53 will be closed to retain the air pressure, `while when the valve 42 is closed the valve 53 will be simultaneously opened for the release of air from the cylinders 34, 38 and 47 so that the pistons in said cylinders may return to normal position. ln the pipe 39 is a valve 57 provided with a crank arm 58 coupled by a connecting rod 59 to the cylinder 34, so that in' the rising and falling movements of the generator the valve 57 will be simultaneously and alternately opened and closed. The starter piston working in the cylinder 34 may be spring actuated, or any suitable type of slide valvemechanism may be provided for admitting air to positively operate the piston in its back and forth motions.
It will thus be understood that when the water in the tank 4 falls below the predetermined level the ignition circuits whichl will be closedy and the valve 49, which is normally closed, 'will be opened to allow air to pass through the normallyopened valve 42 to the cylinder 47 whereby the valve 44 will be opened to supply air to the generator lifter -which will be raised to operative position, the upward movement of the generator at the same time opening the valve 57 to supply air to the starter cylinder, whereby the starter will be thrown into actionto start the engine the parts being maintained in this position until the engine reaches a speed greater than that of the normal speed of the starter gear 37, at which time an automatic governor mechanism will be thrown into operation to throw the starter out of action while permitting the engine to continue working. When the starter is thrown out of action the valve 57 will be automatically closed, and the valve 42 will be simultaneously closed by the governor mechanism, thus cutting oli' the supply of air to the starter cylinders and opening the valve 53 for the vent of the air to the atmosphere, the piston. 46 on returning to normal position simultaneously closing the valve 44. The valve 49 will, however, remain open, without influence, as long as the float 33 remains below the predetermined level of the water in the tank 4, so that the ignition circuit and motor will remain in action to pump water into the tank 4 until the normal level of the water therein is reached, at which time the ignitionl circuit ,will :be thrown out of action andthe motion of the vengine andthe water pump arrested, aspreviously explained.
The governor mechanism lreferred .tacomprises la centrifugal type of governor 60 having yits weighted governor arm l61 ronnected as usual with a grooved ysliding collar 462, for raising and lowering said collar on thegovernor staff inthe inwardand outward movement ofthe governor balls. The shaft of this governor is driien by a suitable gearing 63 from the sha-ft of .the engine f6, andthe grooved collar 62 is operatively connected with Vbell crank :lever 64 which is coupled by a rod 65 to the other arm of the bell crank -lever 56, whereby when 4the speed of the engine reaches acertain degree the outward movement of the governorballs in drawing the Lgrooved ,collar upward will communicate `motion through ythe connection 65 to close the normally open valve 42 `and thus throw the starter out of action, the valve 42 remaining closed as long as the engine is in action and until it is stopped, whereupon the grooved collar in its descent will reopen and reset the valve 4t2 in normally open position for action as .hereinbefore described.
Thus it will be understood lthat the governor mechanism will automatically effect the cutfod of the supply of air Atothe cylinders associated with the starter, wherein1 the starter will -be caused `to return to nor mal `position and its gear actuating cylinder and piston simultaneously thrown out of operation.
In practice, the air reservoir 39 is initially primed or charged with air compressed yto a desired density, and provision 4is made `for replenishing this reservoir with air when the pressure therein falls-below that intended to be constantly maintained. The device for keeping the air tank charged with air comprisesan air supply pump 66 the cylinder of which is provided with a check `valve intake 67 and a check valve outlet 68. the latter being connected with the main air supply pipe 4 0 by a feed pipe 70. The pump plunger or piston 71 has its rod or stem 72 connected with a reciprocating Ahead 73 movable in cross head guides 74 in which lalso moves a cross Vhead 75 coupled by a connecting rod 76 with a pump driving gear 77 drlven from a gear 78 lon the motor shaft. The pump plunger is adapted to be operated 0n its backward stroke :by an actuating spring 79 connected with the head 73, and to be impelled on its forward stroke ,by .the cross head 75. The pump `plunger is normally held inactive and at the limit of its forward or discharge stroke by a latch dovice consisting of a latch member 8O on the rod Aor stern v72 which is engaged by f1 latch member 81' on the longer arm of a lever 82. 'Ehe said long arm of .the Jever ,82 is adapted.
toeberetractedby the action of a spring- 88 and isilimited in vits 4retracting movementl by a stop 84 on .the guide 74. -When the latch member `81 :is retracted thepiston is free to be drawnlbaokward-,by a spring 79 and to be forced forward on its compression and discharge stroke by the vcross head 75. The short arm of the lever 82 is connected with a piston in acontrolling cylinder 84, which is connected at its upper end by a pipe 85 with a branchpipe 86 leading from the pipe 70, .whereby the piston in said cylinder 84 is normally subjected to the pressure in the air `feed line and is forced downward in said cylinderithus holding the latch member 81 in engagement with the `latch member 80 to maintain the pump in an inoperative condition as will be readily understood.
A relief pipe 87 is connected with the upper end of the cylinder 84 and has arranged therein a valve 88 the stem of which is vprovided with a crank arm 89 coupled by a connecting rod 90 with a plunger 91 in the pipe A86, sald plunger being normally held depressed yto hold the valve 88 closed, thus maintaining the pressure in the cylinder 84 to hold the latch member 81 projected. In the pipe 85 is a controlling valve 91 which is connected with a. lever 92 controlled by yan actuating spring v93 yand pivoted to the connecting rod 90, the construction being such thatthe valve 91 is normally held in open position when the plunger 90 is depressed against/thc resistance of the spring 93, which is thereby `held in a tensioned condition. vWhenphowever7 the .pressure in the air tank 39 and the air feed line falls below a predetermined degree, the spring 93 overcomes the pressure against the plunger `90 and raisessaid plunger thereby closing the valve 91 against the supply of air to the cylinder 84 and opening the valve 88 to permit the air contained in the top of said cylinder to exhaust,.thus allowing the spring 83 to draw the long arm of the lever 82 downward and throw the latch member 81 out of engagement with the latch member 80, whereupon the spring 79 will be free to move the pump plunger on its suction stroke and said spring and the cross head 75 will reciprocate the head 73 of the pump plunger back and forth, whereby the air in the tank and air line will be replenished and restored to normal working pressure. As soon as this occurs the plunger 90 will again be forced downward, thus closing the valve 88 and opening the valve 91 to again supply air to the cylinder 84, thus resetting the latch member 81 to engage and hold the pump plunger from backward movement, whereby the pump will be thrown out of operation. The operation above described whereby the air pump is thrown into and out of action will be re.- peated in the running of the driving motor whenever the pressure inthe tank falls below the predetermined degree, ,thusv keeping the air pressure at the properl stage for supplying air to operate the starter.
F rom the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my improved water pump will be readily understood, and it will be seen that the invention provides a pump operated by an internal combustion motor combined withv means, controlled by the level of. the water in the receiving tank, to throw the motor into and out of operation whenever a replenishment of the tank with water up to a prescribed level is required, the construction being such that the apparatus requires little or no attention, care being only necessary to keep the parts in proper working condition. llfhile the construction and arrangement of parts disclosed is preferred, it will, of course,
be understood that changes in the form, pro-v portion and arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims may be made without departing from the spirit or sacri*- ficing any of the advantages of the invention.
I claim l. In a water pumping apparatus, the combination of a water receiver, a water pump, an internal combustion motor for driving the pump, a starter for starting the motor, ignition means for the motor, a pivot-- ally mounted frame and fluid pressure means connected therewith for rendering the starter operative and inoperative, means controlled by the speed of the motor for governing said Huid pressure means for rendering said starter inoperative, and fioat controlled means governed by the level' of the water in the receiver for controlling said ignition means and Huid pressure means to start the motor. y
2. In a water pumping apparatus, the combination of a water receiver, a pump, an internal combustion motor for driving the pump, ignition means, a fluid pressure controlled starter for starting the motor and including a source of iiuid pressure supply, means controlled by the speed of the motor for governing the fluid pressure means to throw the starter out of action, .means governed 'by the level of the water in the receiver for controlling the ignition means and also for controlling the fluid pressure, means to throw the starter into action, a pivoted frame for mounting said iiuid pressure controlled starter, and fluid pressure means for throwing the frame into position to render the starter operative.
8. In a water pumping apparatus, the combination of a water receiver, a pump, an internal combustion motor for driving the pump, ignition means, a starter adapted to be thrown into and out of gear with the motor and normally out of gear therewith, fluid pressure means for throwing the lstarter into gear with the motor and operating the same, means controlling said fluid pressure means and governed by the speed of the motor for throwing the starter out of action, said starter including a motor, a wheel driven thereby and a frame pivotally mounting the motor and wheel, and means controlled by the level of the water in the receiver for governing the ignition means and also controlling the fluid presi sure'means for throwing the starter into action.

In a Water pumping apparatus, the combination of a water receiver, a pump, an internal combustion motor for driving the pump, ignition means, and a governor driven from the motor, a starter movable into and out of gear with the motor and normally out of gear therewith, fluid pressure means for controlling, the starter and operating the same, a float in the receiver for controlling the ignitionmeans and also controlling the fiuid pressure means for throwing the starter into action, and means controlled by the gov-v ernor for controlling said fluid pressure means to throw the starter out of action when the speed of the engine reaches a predetermined point, said means controlled by the governor ,including a. pressure cylinder and a piston therein, an inlet pipe for the cylinder, a valve in the inlet, means controlled by the Hoat for operating the valve, a valve controlled by the plunger for admitting pressure to the means throwing in the starter, an inlet valve controlled by the engine governor and a valve simultaneously and reversely operated by the governor for relieving pressure on the plunger.
5. In a water pumping apparatus, the combination of a water receiver, a pump, an internal combustion motor for driving the pump, means governed by the level of the water in the receiver for throwing the motor into and out of action, a fuel reservoir, a fuel receptacle above the level of the fuel reser. voir, a pump actuated by the motor for constantly raising fuel from the reservoir to the receptacle, and an overflow connection for returning the excess amount of fuel from the receptacle to the reservoir, and pressure controlled means comprising a plurality of plungers and cylinders, and a plurality of valves one of which is opened when the other is thrown to closed position by a given movement of one of the plungers, for rendering inactive one element of the pump last named lby reason of the movement of the other plunger. i
