UNITED STATES PATENT onnion.
WILLIAM H. LEE, 0]? SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SYRACUSE CHILLED PLOW COMPANY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
PLOWSHARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed July 16, 1915. Serial No. 40,270.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Plowshare.
This invention relates to the manufacture of plates used in earth turning elements of plows, as the share or the mold board, and has for its object the production of such a plate which has a hard chilled surface for engaging the earth and a soft tough unchilled backing for the chilled surface; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of a plow share made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
F Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line A-A,
This plow share or plate for the earth turning elements of plows has alternate chilled and unchilled zones located interiorly of the body of the plate between the smooth front working face and the rear face thereof and extending substantially parallel to each other, the chilled zones extendlng inwardly from the front face, that is, the face engaging the earth, and terminating short of the rear face, and the unchilled portions extending inwardly from the rear face and extending between the chilled zones and' terminating short of the front face.
1 designates the share, and 2, 3 the chilled and unchilled zones. The chilled zone 2 extend inwardly from the front face and terminate short of the rear face of the share so that there is a comparatively thin back ing or layer of unchilled material 4 between the thickest part of each chilled zone and the rear face of the share, and the unchilled portions 3 in addition to the thin layers 4 include thick portions which extend between the thick parts of the chilled zones and terminate short of the front face of the share leaving thin layers 5 of chilled metal connecting the thick parts of the chilled zones 2. Hence the entire front face of the share is chilled and substantially all the entire rear face of the share unchilled so that the hard chilled front is backed by a tough strong unchilled body.
The line of demarcation between the chilled and unchilled parts when viewed in cross-section, as seen in Fig. 3 is a wavy line. The chilled zones extend along the lines of penetration, that is, parallel to the direction of the earth over the share. This facilitates cleaning or shedding.
The cutting edge or margin 6 of the share is chilled throughout as seen in Fig. 3. Some of the unchilled zones are formed with holes 7 through which bolts are passed for securing the plow share in position.
The chilling is effected by bringing the heated metal when poured in the mold against the cold surfaces of strips spaced apart, these strips being near enough together so that the chilling effect extends laterally and forms the thin chilled portions or layers 5. The outline left by these chilling strips is shown by lines 8, Fig. 1, this outline being visible on the share after the chilling is completed and the share is cooled, although the chilling effect extends laterally from said lines.
Usually, the chilled margin 6 is chilled from the rear side of the plate and this edge is sufliciently thin so that the chilling efi'ect cart-ends entirely through said margin 01 e ge 6.
As will be understood by those skilled in the art, chilled plow shares or mold boards have heretofore been warped more or less and not in the exact shape desired. Owing to the arrangement of the chilling in my plow share, the share is practically unwarped.
What I claim is A plate for use in the earth turning elements of plows, the plate having a smooth front working face and provided with alternate chilled and unchilled substantially parallel zones located interiorly of the body of the plate between the smooth front working face and the rear face thereof, the chilled entirely through the margin, substantially as zones terminating short of the rear face of and for the purpose described. the plate, and the unchilled zones extend- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 10 ing between the chilled zones and terminatsigned my name, at Syr acuse,,in the county 5 ing short of the front or Wearing face of of Onondaga-and State of New York, this the plate, and the plate also having a, 28th day of May, 1915. chilled cutting margin, the chill extending WILLIAM H. LEE.
