GEARING FOR WIND1VIOTORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL ARAIZA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Victorville, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Wind-Motors, of which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to gearing for windmills. p
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a windmill having vanes which may be controlled to olfer variable resistance to the wind without interruption of the rotation of the windmill head, said control being such as to regulate the speed of rotation of the mill and the power developed thereby under varying weather conditions, as well as to practically discontinue the operation of the mill, when desired.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating the completely assembled windmill with parts broken away to more clearly disclose the sail controlling mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section as seen on the line 22 of Fig. 1, particularly illustrating the disposition of the sail actuating elements.
Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section as seen on the line 33 of ig. 1, particularly disclosing the sectional ormation of one of the sails.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a supporting structure upon which the rotor 11 of a windmill is carried. This structure may be of any desired design and is here shown as fitted at its upper end with a bearing plate 12 throughwhich a vertical pump shaft 13 extends. Mounted upon this shaft and resting upon the bearing is a supporting collar 14. The shaft extends upwardly from this collar to support the rotor frame upon which a plurality of sails 15 are mounted. In the present embodiment of the invention four sails are used, although it will be understood that any other suitable number may be utilized without departing from the spirit of the invention. These sails are of peculiar design, each one being substantially arcuate in transverse cross section, as particularly shown in Fig. 3, and having longitudinally tapering Application filed July 19, 1917. This design causes the sails to readily catch the wind and utilize its power.
In order that the effective action of the sails may be adjusted, each of the sail members is provided with hinged brackets 16 and 17 at their upper and lower ends. These brackets are in longitudinal alinement and are adapted to receive a hinge bolt 18 which passes through both of the brackets and also through bearing members 19. These bearings are secured to angularly disposed frame members 20 of the rotor frame and therefore cause the sails to be supported at an angle to the rotating shaft, as particularly shown in Fig. 1.
The upper ends are formed with okes which constitute a part of universal oints 21. These joints are connected with driving shafts 22 which extend horizontally and are rotatably secured upon the upper plate 23 of the rotor frame. This plate is secured to rotate with the shaft 13. Mounted upon each of the driving shafts 22 are spur pinions 24 which are in mesh with vertical racks 25. The racks are slidably positioned through openings in the top plate 23 and when they are reciprocated will act to rotate the spur gears and their shafts, this motion, in turn, being imparted to the hinge rods 18 and the sails fixed thereto. The racks are fixed to upper and lower sliding bearings 26 and 27 which are positioned above and below the rotor frame, respectively. These bearings are fitted with keys which register with a longitudinally extending key-way 28 formed along the shaft. An intermediate supporting bearing 29 is secured to the racks and midway the distance between the bearings 26 and 27. By this arrangement the racks may be vertically reciprocated by a shifting rod 30 which is formed with a yoke 31 engaging a grooved collar 32 at the lower end of hearing 27.
In operation, the windmill is assembled as shown in Fig. 1 and its sails set to catch the wind. This is accomplished by raising or lowering the shifting rod 30 to either swing the sails out to present their cups to the wind, or incline them so that the wind will not strike so forcibly. As the shifting rod 30 is moved it will act by means of the yoke,
31 to raise and lower the sliding bearings 26' and 27. The racks 25 will thus be reciprocated and will cause rotation of the gears 24 and the drive shafts upon which they are bearing plate fixed upon 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for mounted. These shafts will act through the universal joints 21 to swing the sails upon their hinge supports.
It will thus be seen that the sails may be regulated, irrespective of the speed of travel of the rotor and that the performance of the windmill may be easily controlled.
While I have shown the preferred construction of my gearing for windmills as now known to me,-it will be und'erstood that various changes in the combination, con
struction and arrangement of parts maybe made by those skilled in the art without 'departing from the spirit of my invention.
