FRED WABTHER, OF DOVER, OHIO.
ROLL-POLISHER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED VVARTIIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dover, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and 1111.-
proved Roll-Polisher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for polishing the rolls of a rolling mill during the operation of the mill. An object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which can be easily attached to a rolling mill and with which the polishing of the rolls may be carried on during the working of the mill.
Another object of the invention is to provide a polishing device for rolling mills in which the carrier of the polishing means is detachable so that the same can be removed when the device is not in use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a polishing device in which the polishing member is maintained yieldingly against the surface to be polished.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a'rolling mill provided with a polishing device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 3;
Fig.3 is a side elevation of the mill, the polishing device being shown in dotted line;
Fig. 4: is an enlarged section on line 14, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a similar section showing the polishing device in inoperative position.
Referring to the drawings, 7 is a polishing-stone carrier or support which has a restricted opening 8 through which the reduced end 9 of the polishing member 10 projects. The head 11 of the polishing member is accommodated within the carrier and it prevents the yielding member 12 within the carrier from forcing the polishing member out of the carrier. Preferably a plate 13 is interposed between the head 11 and the yielding members 12. To facilitate the introduction and removal of the polishing Specification of Letters Batent.

member, pin openings let are provided in the carrier so that pins may be inserted in front of the plate 13, thereby relieving the polishing member 10 of pressure from the springs 12.
The carrier 7 has a yoke 15 open at the lower end so that the carrier may be hooked on to a bar 16 the ends of which are connected to move with links 17 which are suspended from a frame 18 of the rolling mill. The bar 16 has preferably a shoulder 19 to engage the end of the yoke 15 and increase the stability of the carrier on the bar. To facilitate the longitudinal movement of the carrier on the bar, rolling members 20 are interposed between the upper edge of the bar and the yoke.
Theswingingmovement of the bar and, therefore,'of the carrier thereon to and from the roller 21 of the mill is controlled by cams 22 which have their bearing on the frame 18 and which cams act against the links 17. The weight of the carrier and bar normally tends to move the polishing member from the roll. The movement of the cams against the links forces the polishing member 10 into engagement with the roller 21 against the resistance of the springs 12.
The longitudinal movement of the carrier on the bar is controlled by a screw 23 to which motion may be imparted from any suitable motion-transmission means 21. Preferably a clutch 25 is provided between the motion-transmission means and the screw so that the rotation of the screw may be arrested at any desired time without interference with the motion-transmission means and to allow the polishing of any part of the roll. The carrier 7 is provided with a lug 26 having threads 27 which mesh with the screw when the bar is moved by the cam to bring the polishing member 10 into engagement with the roll. This engagement of the carrier with the screw causes the carrier to travel along the bar and polishes the roll while the same rotates.
The thread of the screw stops short of one end so that when the carrier reaches the end of its travel it is disengaged from the screw. The carrier can then be directly removed from the bar, and for this purpose an opening 28 is provided in the upper part of the yoke (see Fig. 1) to facilitate the engagement of the tongues to raise the carrier of the bar. It is self-evident that when the cams are released from the links the carrier ished, a bar mounted to swing to and from the roll, a polishing-member carrier mounted to travel along the bar, and means for swinging the bar to and from the roll.
2. In combination with a roll to be polished, a bar mounted to swing to'and from the roll, a carrier mounted to travel along the bar, means for feeding the carrier along the bar adapted'to be disengaged from the carrier when the bar is swung from the roll, and means for moving the bar toward the roll whereby the carrier is brought into engagement with the feeding means.
3. In combination with a roll to be polished, a bar mounted toswing to and from the roll, a carrier mounted to travel along the bar, a polishing member yieldingly mounted in the carrier, means for moving the barteward the roll whereby the polishing member is caused to engage the roll, and means for feeding the carrier along the bar adapted to be engaged by the carrier when the polishing member engages the roll.
4:. In combination with a roll to be polished, a bar mounted to swing to and from the roll, a carrier removably suspended mean"? I from the bar,"a polishing member yieldingly supported within the carrier to engage the roll, means forv feeding the carrier along the bar, and means for bringing the bar toward the roll whereby the polishing member is brought into engagement with the roll and the carrier into engagement with the feedmg means.
5. In combination with a rollto be polished, a bar, links for suspending the bar so that the same may be swung to and from the roll, cams for engaging the links whereby the bar may be moved toward the roll, a carrier suspended from the bar and mounted to move alongside of the bar, a polishing member yieldingly supported within the carrier, and a screw, said carrier having threads adapted to engage the screw when the bar is moved by the cams toward the roll and bring the polishing member into engagement with the roll.
6.' In combination -with a roll to be polished, a bar suspended to swing to and from the roll, eccentrics for moving the bar toward the'roll, a carrier removably suspended from the bar, a feed screw, and a polishing member yieldingly supponted within the carrier, said carrier having a threaded portion adapted to engage the screw when the bar is moved by the eccentric toward the roll to bring the polishing member into engagement with the roll.
