Description

' 'l T o all whom z' may concern.'
Tias-PATE Beit known that' I, ARTHUR' JACOBS, al
citizen ofthe UnitedStates, and resident of Cleveland, in the 'county of Cuyahoga'and. ,State ofOhio,4 haveY invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in *Combined Register a'nd'Addiiig' Machines, Of-Which I hereby vdeclare the following to be a full, clear, and :exact description, such as 'Wolll y.
1 require' more enable others skilled'in the art to which it a'ppertaiiis to make and use the same.
, The objects 'of'th'e invention are to prol -loosely mounted .upon a shaft Gr8 and' op-` videV improved tripping" and advancing mechanism 'for operating the dogs, which actuate 'the 'adding wheels and dials of .an adding machine and are indicated herein as improved mechanism to be employed in the operation' of a cash register for 'ordinary mercantile business,` combined with an'add' '20 v secured, each dog1 ing attachment, such as shown and described in'an application for Letters Patent sled by me `J une 30, 1914, and bearing v'Serial'hla 848,116, in-which' the adding dogs are actuated by means of a 'curved plateft'o which av series of cam shaped extensions'v are .in succession being actuated byone' of t ese ca'm extensions.
' To simplify the construction and to' pro- U vide practical and veflicient mechanism for as to` app'ly the cams in successionto. theV V'operate the dogs.
this' purpose, the mechanism including a main cam-shaft andl series of cams spaced thereon and inclined in a graduated series. for ythis purpose, vto
of vangles is employed The invention further includes means for rotating the shaft in one direction1 only so dogs which actuate the adding ratchets.
It f urther includes the combination and` 'arrangement of parts and construction of .details as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanyingdrawings andspecically 4 pointed-out in the claim.
In the'ac'compan'ying drawings Figure 1v is a transverse sectionl of the machine; Fig.
' .2 is a broken rearelevation, the rear wall being removed; Fig. '3 is a detail view of the ratchet and pawl mechanism which vdrive the cam shaft; Fig. Litis anrear elevation of one of the operating dogs'for the adding In these' views the general fportionspf or sales dials, the exterior 'operating lever land. adding dials, operated thereby, l also- Applicationled april' 2, 1915. -Serial No.1l8,6\54.

been Clep ment of the -respective Afinger .levers by I means offthe following mechanism.
*The dialsv are 'read through openings H in the casing A. kEach'finger lever B is provided with a springpressed pawl B3 whichengages the'teeth of a main ratchet wheel I provided with teeth,"whi ch moves when `actuated by its corresponding lever linger levers moves. f A,
Eachl ratchet wheel I" serves as. a`l spur' gear to engage and operate a second `gear with the number of digits through which the y I, which is attached to and in 'turrf rotates one of the adding dials. Each addingv dial contains three series of digits (eachnumbered from4 0 to 9 respectively) vand does not rotate backward b'ut moves constantly -wheels are manually operated by -meansff the-upward movement of the finger levers,
which Ais obtained by moving-the. exterior-1` lever forward, .and al'lbut theirst dial-areautomatically operated, each by the move- -ment of the next preceding ratchet Wheel I to advanceone digit inthe scale of num-4 VAbers, thus adding 10.,v 100, 1000, etc., in
turn to the'total sum obtained at the time that the exterior lever is moved back to its starting point. l This result is accomplished by special tripping and advancin mechanism constructed to operate as follows:
A tripping ratchet when J is secured to 'andturns withv each ma@ ratchet wheel I,
and they-are connected by means of a sleeve J8 looselymounted upon the shaft C. The tripping ratchet wheel is provided with s ix at every tenthl space (equivalent to theseries -in the samedirectiomso that .when the digit I.
`teeth J2, J2, which are arranged to engage I' shaft J4, and toelevate the same to release i main ratchet wheel.
a spring pressed pivoted arm J".
This pawl J 1 is provided with a shoulder J2 which engages the extremity J 1 of lne pivoted arm J upon a shaft J1". A spring operated pawl J 7 pivoted on this arm engages with the main ratchet wheel I which operates the next succeeding adding Wheel.
It is understood that each set of main and tripping ratchet wheels are connected together in pairsand that one pair will operate lthe next succeeding pair of ratchet wheels, and thereby the corresponding gear and adding dial.
Each adding dial H and its respective gear. I are secured upon a commonlsleeve and gears and-dials operate 1n pairs together. When held by the tripping pawl in the position shown in Fig. l the spring pawl J7 is not operating the teeth of the dog J 3 is raised to drop the arm Jx a roller 4J9 comes into engagement with a cam secured with others of a series of cams upon a common shaft K.
These cams are arranged .to pass entirely out of engagement with the rollers Ja on the forward movement of the exterior lever G", but to engage in turn lwith the rollers J upon the arms J 2 and to release thetripping dogs J3 when the exterior lever Gr7 is raised upon the rearward or return movement thereof. n
This acts to remove each spring pawlv J1 in turn into engagement with the main ratchet wheel and to move the ratchet Wheel the distance of one tooth as the cam moves backward, which advances the corresponding dial the space of one digit.
The meansfor rotating the cam shaft in one direction to engage the tripping mechanism whenthe exterior lever .is raised is shown in Figs. l `and 2.
Here K- is a gear loosely mounted upon lever.
But when the tripping the shaft K11 and K3 is a pawl upon said gear. This pawl engages a shoulder KA1 upon a disk K5 fixed upon the shaft.
. A segmental rack L upon an arm Lf integral with the arm G and pivoted u on the shaft C, is operated by Vmeans of a/ ink G2 pivoted in the gear I and the shaft G8, and gear G and shaft G, to which the main lever Gr7 is secured.
'Ihe pawl and ratchet mentioned permits the tripping cams K to operate in one direction only and to remain quiet dur-ing the interval.
The advancement of the adding dials for the purpose of addition is obtained by the return or rearward movement ofthe exterior These movements are made to alternate in this manner so that the adding dials will remain quiet before the tripping and advancing movements begin.
A dog J1 for each main ratchet wheel prevents backward movement thereof.
What I claim as new and des-ireto secure by VLetters Patent is:
The combination in an addingmachine, with main gears and tripping Wheels secured theretov in pairs, o-f a tripping exteriorly projecting lever, a segmental rack operatively connected therewith, a cam shaft and rigid cams thereon, said cam shaft rotated by said rack a series of advancing spring dogs operated in sequence by said cams, each dog engaging one of said main gears, an extended -rockarm upon which each dog is pivoted, and an opposite arml rigidly connected therewith, a tripping lever engaging with each arm, said tripping levers released 'by said tripping wheels 7in turn, and return springs f or said dog supporting rock arms. In testlmony whereof, I hereunto set my hand this 19th day of October, 1914.
