To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CHRIsTnNo'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVeede, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Elevating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in water'elevating apparatus and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character embodying a series of buckets traveling in an endless path and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby each of the buckets may be operated to discharge the contents thereof when the bucket has reached a predetermined point above the source of supply.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved apparatus of this general character including a bucket mounted for movement in a vertical plane together with means for inverting said bucket upon reaching a predetermined point in its upward travel and for maintaining the same inverted for a predetermined time during its upward movement so that the discharge of the contents of said bucket is assured.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a'novel and improved apparatus ofthis general character especially designed and adapted for use to elevate water for the purpose of irrigation and wherein means is pro vided to assure the proper delivery of the water to a receiving flume.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved water elevating apparatus whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accom panying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical'sectional view taken through awater elevating apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the upper end portion of my improved apparatus as herein embodied;
Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the structure disclosed in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4: is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a pair of parallel members or beams of predetermined length and which are adapted to be supported in any desired manner in substantially a vertical planewith the lower end portions thereof extending a material distance below the level of the source of supply from which water is to be elevated. The opposite end portions of the members or beams 1 rotatably support the shafts 2 and mounted upon each of said shafts 2 is a pair of sprocket wheels 3. The wheels 3 of each shaft are positioned adjacent opposite ends of the shaft and the wheels of one shaft are in alinement with the wheels of the second shaft. Also supported by the members or beams 1 inwardly of the upper shaft 2 is a driven shaft 4 adapted to be coupled to a suitable source of power in any desired manner. As herein disclosed an end portion of the shaft 4: is provided with a pulley 5 around which a driving belt is adapted to be directed. The opposite end portion of the shaft 4 has fixed thereto a gear 6 meshin with a gear 7 carried by the adjacent end portion of the upper shaft 2 whereby requisite rotation may be imparted to said upper shaft 2. Disposed over the wheels 3 of the shafts 2 are the endless chains 8 and positioned between said chains are the buckets B preferably rectangular in form and having their upper ends open. Extending laterally from the side walls of each of the buckets B at a point above the longitudinal center of said bucket but at the transverse center of the side walls are the trunnions 9 which are rotatably engaged with a pair of transversely alined links 10 of the chains 8 whereby the bucket B is capable of rotary movement. As each of the buckets B travels downwardly the open end thereof is upwardly disposed, and
by contact of the rollers 14, carried by thebucket with the chains 8, said bucket will hang on an angle relative to the members or beams 1 and as said bucket comes into contact with the surface of the water, said bucket will assume for a short period of time a substantially horizontal position which is further assured by the buoyancy afforded thereto by the air within the bucket. When the bucket B is initially brought into contact with the water, the pull is upon the trunnions 9 and as said trunnions are beyond the longitudinal center of the bucket, said bucket will be inverted as it passes downwardly through the water so that when said bucket passes beneath the lower shaft 2 it will be filled with water. The weight of the water vwithin the bucket will cause the same to maintain a vertical position as it passes upwardly.
Extending upwardly from the ends of the bucket B at the top or open end thereof and immediately adjacent the outer face of the bucket when the same is traveling upward are the arms 11. The free end portions of said arms have extending in opposite directions outwardly of the end walls of the bucket B the stud shafts 12 upon which are mounted the rollers 141-. Extending forwardly from each of the members or beams 1 or in a direction toward the series of buckets B traveling upwardly are the arms 15 and which arms are in horizontal or. transverse alinement. The outer ends of the arms 15 terminate in the upwardly directed extensions 16 and it is preferred that the junction between each of the arms 15 and its extension 16 be rounded as indicated at 15*.
Hingedly connected with the upper end portion of the extension 16 is a longitudinally curved arm or switch member 17 which is forwardly or outwardly directed and which is normally maintained by gravity in its lowered or open position. At a predetermined point above the arms 15 the members or beams 1 have extending therefrom in the same direction as the arms 15 a second pair of horizontally or transversely alined arms 18. The outer end of each of the arms 18 has secured thereto the vertically disposed trackway 19 in longitudinal alinement with the extension 16 immediately therebelow. The lower end portion of the track 19 is continued by the outwardly disposed extension 20 herein disclosed as substantially at right-angles to the track 19. 'The junction between the track 19 and its extension 20 is preferably rounded as at 21. It is also preferred that the upper end. of each of the tracks 19 be disposed on an upward and outward curvature as indicated at 22. My improved apparatus as herein disclosed is particularly adapted for use in the elevation of water for irrigation purposes and to deliver the water to a receiving fiume and which flume F has its receiving end portion ex tending a predetermined distance inwardly of the extension 20 of the track 19. As each of the buckets B travels upwardly the rollers 14s arranged at the upper end of said bucket adjacent its outer face will engage the extension 16 with the arms 15 and contact with t e curved arm or switch member 17 and throw the same upwardly into contact with the inner end portions of the extensions 20 of the tracks 19. The rollers will then travel over said curved arms or switch member and outwardly of the extensions 20. During this period the bucket B will be substantially inverted so that the contents thereof will be delivered to the receiving end of the fiume. eled along the extensions 20 the curved arms or switch members 17 will drop into their lowered or open position. 'When the trunnions 9 pass above the extensions 20 the rollers let will travel inwardly of said extensions 20 and then upwardly of the track 19 so that for a predetermined period the bucket B will be maintained substantially inverted and on such inclination as to assure the fiume F receiving the water which may be dis charged from the bucket during its upward movement in this position. When the rollers 1 1 reach the upper end portions of the tracks 19 the bucket B will swing by gravity in a position with its open end at the top so thatthe same will be in proper position to be refilled upon its descent.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a water elevating apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and fa cility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in prac-.
tice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A water elevator comprising a suporting structure, a pair of endless memers coacting therewith, means for moving said members, a bucket positioned between said members and pivotally engaged therewith, oppositely directed members carried by the sides of the bucket adjacent the top thereof and in close proximity to the outer face thereof when moving upwardly, vertically disposed tracks carried by the supporting structure, the lower ends of said tracks being provided with outwardly directed extensions, vertically swinging switch members arranged below the extensions of the tracks and adapted for contact therewith, said switch members being normally open and positioned in the line of travel of the lateral extensions of the bucket when said bucket is After the rollers 14: have travmoving upwardly, said switch members assuming by gravity their normal or open position.
2. A water elevator comprising a supporting structure, a pair of endless members coacting therewith, means for moving said members, a bucket positioned between said members and pivotally engaged therewith, oppositely directed members carried by the sides of the bucket adjacent the top thereof and in close proximity to the outer face thereof when moving upwardly, vertically disposed tracks, the lower ends of said tracks being provided with outwardly directed extensions, vertically swinging switch members arranged below the extensions of the tracks and adapted for contact therewith, said switch members being normally open and positioned in the line of travel of the lateral extensions of the bucket when said bucket is moving upwardly, said switch members assuming by gravity their normal or open position.
3. A water elevator comprising a supporting structure, a pair of endless members coacting therewith, means for moving said members, a bucket positioned between said members and pivotally engaged therewith, oppositely directed members carried by the sides of the bucket adjacent the top thereof and in close proximity to the outer face thereof when moving upwardly, vertically disposed tracks carried by the supporting structure, the lower ends of said tracks being provided with outwardly directed extensions, vertically disposed members arranged below the tracks and in alinement therewith, the upper ends of said members being spaced from the lower ends of the tracks, and vertically swinging switch members pivotally engaged with the upper end portions of the members and adapted for contact with the extensions of the tracks, said switch members being normally open and positioned in the line of travel of the lateral extensions of the bucket when said bucket is moving upwardly, said switch members assuming by gravity their normal or open position.
