Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizenof the United States, and resident "along its stitched line is insured by means for adjusting the parts. while the mechathe signature in therotary movement of the H U TE srarns PATIENT OFFICE.
HOWARD M. BARBER, OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR '10 0. B. COTTRELL &
. I SONS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
SHEET-HANDLING MACHINE.
of Stonington, in the county of New London andState of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet- Handling Machines, of which: the following [is a specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in signature stitching and folding mechanisms whereby accurate folding of the signature nisms areoperating.
My invention morepartlcularly includes 1 a rotary sheet carrier such, for instance, as the cylinder forming part of a folding;
" mechanism, grippers on the carrier, means for operating the grippers at their taking' I itsjtable, a sheetstop for the. stitcher table,
a cam on the rotary sheet carrier arranged and releasing points, a stitcher mechanism,
"to operate the sheet stop 'to permit the stitched signature'to be taken by the grippers on the rotary carrier at the proper I time, and means for adjusting the position of theusheet stop with respect to the taking I point of said grippers whereby the grippers will be caused to close onto the signature at varying distances from the head of the machine is in operation; .it being understood that the stitcher mechanism is adjusted together with the sheetstop to maintain the predetermined distance between the sheet stop and the stitched line.
is represented in the accompanying drawings in which, f Figure'1 represents .in end elevation sopractical embodiment of my invention j much of a' sheet handling machine as will give a clear understandingof my invention,
thefemale folding cylinder bcing removed;
Fig.2 is asection taken in the .plane 'of the line II'II of Fig. 1, a portion of the :femalerfold'in Fig. 3 is a V V t ail seetion at the sheet step cylinder being shown.

, Fig. 4 is across section taken in the plane of the line IV-'-IV, of Fig. 2, and
Fig. .5. is a detail section taken in the plane of the lineV-V of Fig. 4. i
,The stitcher table is denoted by 1, the
. stitcher mechanism generally, by 2, and its driving shaft .by 3, which stitcher maybe of any well known or approved construction adapted to stitch a signature while the movement of the signature is arrested on .the
The signature may be fed from the cross-shaft 10 supported in the side frames 11,12, of the machine. The free ends of these stop fingers 6. when the sttp is lowered, are located in the circumferential grooves 13 ot'the rotary sheet carrie'r 14, which, in the present instance, is one member of a pair of coacting folding cylinders, namely, the member which carries the folding blade 15 which'coacts with the folding jaw 16 carried by the other member 17 of the folding cylinders. This rotary carrier 14 is mounted on a suitable crossshaft 18, and it carries a set of tumbler actuated grippers 19, the tumbler 20 of which grippers is engaged by its actuating pin 21 at the taking point for the grippers ar d by the actuating pin 22 at the releasing point for the grippers, this mechanism being of well known and approved form.
The mechanism for controlling the opera- "tion of'the folding blade 15 and folding ]21WS 16, is not shown herein, but it is understod that it may be of any well known or approved construction operative to cause the signature to be folded oif from the carrier v1 1 onto the carrier 17. The rotary carrier 14 is provided with a peripheral cam 23 arranged in position to engage a stud or roller 24 carried by a two-armed lever 25, 26, fixed to the cross bar 7 of the sheet stop, at the proper time to raise the sheet stop to permit thestit hed signature to be transferred from the stitcher table'l t'o'the grippers 19. -A rod 2741s attached at one end to the arm 26, and slidably engages a stud 28. A spring 29 interposed between this stud 28 and a collar 30, tends to yieldingly hold the stop in its operative position With the fingers 6 in the circumferential grooves 13 of the carrier 14.
The means which I- pro' vide for 'adiusting the fold line with respect to the stitched line of the signature is constructed; ar
ranged and operated as follows:
mechanism has fixed thereto, by, suitable screws 32, a pair-of studs 33'Which extend into the main frame 34: of the stitcher mechan s a Means for mOvingtheauXiliary frame-ineludes a cross -lsha ft -35--having worms 36 meshing With-worm gears 37: which havea threaded engagement ;;with; the; tstuds" 33. j1'1his shaft '35T is providedwith asuitable hand .wheel 38, and by; turning-this hand wheel, the auXil-iarv; frame, .is mo ved longitudinally o'f the table 1.
