'1 h (1/! r /mm it any} concern:
Be it known that l. H
States, residing at Chicago. (ook t'ounty. Illinois, have invent"- ed certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrometers or Storage-Battery Testers, of \vhieh "the following. taken in connection with the drawings. is a description. I
My invention has for its object the pro duction of a ltvdronu-ter or storage battery tester designed who used in testing the. specifiegrin it of liquids. more particularly so nsed in connection with aut mobiles.
Heretofore. devices of thi kind have been construeted of glass tubes which were easily broken. and which were ditlieult to read.
owing to the shape and construction of the o that it (an be easily read.
My invention is designed to oven lties. first by constructing same of transparent. non-breakable material. and second by shaping the same sothat the printing is placed upon plane surfaces,
same. come these :hlficu A further object of my invention is to provide a guide member to be placed inside of the syringe when the ame is used in con? nection with a tester sueh as is now found on the market.
A further object of my inventioui to produce a deviee of the (la s deseribed whieh shall be so constructed, and adapted for the purpose that friction in movement of is praetieallv eliminated. thereb;- very aceurate results when used. 3
A further object of the. invention is to produce a device of the class described which is simple, cheap. and durable. not liable to or use w en needed. 1 i
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated what I now consider the preferred form of my invention. althoi'igh certain details of eonstruetionmay be changed without'departing from-the spirit thereof, and in these drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my hydrometer:

' Refeuring' to the drawings. which is angular in cross seeti transverse seetiouul .view of on. as shown g. 3. This casing H more preferabl formed of celluloid, pyralin, or other non-breakable transparent material, so shaped that thesides thereof will presentplane sin-fares. In this instance have shown the casing formed of"three at I eontmnplate making it square, hexagonal. octagonal; etc, as desired.
(*aps, aa, are cemented or otherwise seat the top a'nrl bottom of this casing, Each of these forming Glfilll'fi for same.
opening there'- t-aps is provided with an through. of the rubber bulb. A reiving the end of the which provides a passageway ner chamber. a. of the casing, A.
Positioned within this easing, .A, float formed of transparent material comand the, cap a, retubular member, a, into the ini prising a hollow elongate-d body, B, which This float is weighted .as at b.
' connection with th vided with openings therethrough tnod'ate the hydrometer. C.
terminates in an elongated neck portion, 6.. at the bottom thereof Arranged on all of the faces of the neck portion, 6. are calibrations, b, gi-iged to indicate the, specifi ravity of the liquid to be tested. The, disii s, N -b are secured to the upper and lower extremities of the Heat. respectively, and are designed to contact with the sides of the easing, A. thereby reducing to a rninimum'the friction caused by the movement of the float, When it is desired to use a glass tube in e angular casin A, I
guide, C,
provide a y of angular plates.
fortned of rf-c' cc. sition by strips, C secured thereto at the edges t hereof, as shown more clearly in Fig. 6., The plates, e-a''-c*.c, are pro 0 accom- These, openmgs. d, are of suitablesize to allow the hydrometer to float in the liquid but not large enough to allow the shoulder, d. on the tube to pass through the plate 0,
When a hydmmeter of the construction retainin a plurafit .\v is a easing the cap,'n. receiving the stem, (1
w ich is spaced apart and held in po-v I Patented Jan. 14. I919.
shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is used, the liquid to be tested is drawn into the casing, A, through the tube, a, by the COIIIPIQSSIOII of the bulb, A, and the weighted float B, will sink in the li uid, indicating the specific gravit of said liquid by the readings on t e ca ibrations, b.
The calibrations and readings presented on the hydrometer are displayed through the transparent material of the flout and the casing by being placed upon the inside of the neck of the hydrometer and displayed through the same.
I claim:
1. A liydroinetcr syringe comprising an elongau-d transparent casing, angular in cross section, and means for drawing liquid into eaid casing.
12 A li ,droini'tvi' syringe roniprising an elongated, non-frangible, transparent caslug, angular in crossz-u-rtion, means for drawing liquid into naid casing, a liydrolneter or float in said casing, also angular in cross section, and provided with (ali brations readable through the body of said hydrometer.
3. A ll \tll'l litt'i(l' syringe roinprising an elongated, non-frangible, transparent easing, angular in cross section, means for drawing liquid into tllll casing. a li \'di'oni-- eter or float in said tuning whivh in an gular in cross section and provided with calibrations readable through the body of aid hydrometcr, said hydrometcr oonforniing in general outline to the form of the casing. disks closing th top andbottom of the hydrometi-r bod mid disks being, larger in dianu-tvr than the width of the liydronieter MM In testimony whom-oi l haw tgllhtl this specification.
