AUTOMATIC VALVE FOR LOCOMOTIVE-BLOWERS. I
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. MELLOR, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, having made application to become a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Valves for Locomotive-Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blowing systems and apparatus therefor for use in connection with locomotives, and more particularly to blower devices adapted for use when steam from the cylinders is not being exhausted through the smoke box in sufficient quantity to be effective, or additional draft is required for any purpose.
The principal objects of my present invention are to provide improved devices for creating a. draft in the smoke box of a locomotive or blowing out the same when no steam or an inefficient quantity thereof is being exhausted therethrough from the cylinders; the provision of improved means for supplying fluid imder pressure to a locomotive blower from a source external of the locomotive; to provide improved means for supplying fluid under pressure to a locomotive blower from the locomotive or from a source external to the locomotive; to provide an improved form of locomotive blower fitting and generally to improve, simplify and cheapen the construction of such devices.
For attaining these and other objects and advantages to be hereinafter set forth, I have provided a construction, one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a portion of a locomotive smoke box with my improved blower fitting applied thereto;

Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 3.
My improved blower fitting comprises a body portion 5 having a curved portion 6 which is adapted to fit the curved face of the smoke box.
The blower fitting is fastened to the smoke box by bolts 8 passing through apertures in the part 6. The body of the fitting is provided with'an extension 9 adapted to project into an aperture in the smoke box 7,
the inner face of which extension is substantially flush with the inner face of the smoke box so that lodgment of dirt or abra sion is avoided as far as may be. If the part 9 extended only part way into the aperture in the smoke box a recess would be formed for the collection of dirt; and, on the other hand, if it projected beyond the inner face of the smoke box, a projection would be formed on which soot, etc., could deposit, or which might become eroded by abrasion.
The part 9 is threaded as shown, for the reception of pipe 10 which leads to a point underthe smoke-stack of the locomotive.
Two connections are provided for supplying fluid under pressure to the blower fitting. The first of these, 11, is provided for the purpose of supplying boiler steam or compressed air from the locomotive for operating the blower, and the second connection 12 is provided for enabling fluid under pressure to be applied to the blower fitting from a source external to the locomotive such as a stationary boiler in a round house. This connection is used for clearing the smoke box after the engine has come into the round house, or for aiding in raising steam in the first instance, and also for other purposes.
A check valve 13 is provided for allowing fluid under pressure from such external source to flow to the blower, while preventing escape of steam or compressed air admitted through connection 11. The check valve is advantageous as enabling the use of an external globe valve or other shut off to be avoided. The check valve 13 is normally held in position shown by means of a spring 16 adapted to hold the valve down under locomotive operating conditions, as is required to prevent the jiggling which would otherwise take place since for the greater part of the time there is little or no pressure on either side of the valve 13. The spring 16 is preferably contained in a housing 17 lower part of the body of the device for receiving a drain valve or plug or the like.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a blowing device for locomotives, a
connection comprising a casing having co1nmunicating chambers one of which is provided with an outlet and an inlet to normally afiord communication between the steam supply and smoke box of a locomotive and the other with an inlet for connection with a fluid pressure source external of a locomotive, and means positively closing communication between the chambers against the action of gravity, inertia and in ternal pressure, said means being yieldinglv movable to open communication between said chambers only by fluid pressure from said external source.
2. In a blowing device for locomotives, a connection comprising a casing having communicating chambers one of which is provided with an outlet and an inlet to normally afford communication between the steam supply and smoke box of a locomotive and the other with an inlet for connection with a fluid pressure source external of a locomotive and means yieldingly but positively closing communication between the pressure in both of said chambers or against the action of gravity, inertia or internal pressure.
3. In a blowing device for locomotives, a connection comprising a casing having a partition therein provided with an opening and forming communicating chambers one of which is provided with an outlet and an inlet to normally afiord communication between the steam supply and smoke box of a locomotive and the other with an inlet for connection with a fluid pressure source external of a locomotive, and a spring seated valve normally positively closing the opening in the partition against the action of gravity, inertia or internal pressure and movable to open position only by fluid pressure from said external source.
