Description
L. B. WHITE. Improvement in Plows.
@wim 5:
"maria UNITED STATES 'AA'InNT OFFICE.
LEWIS B. WHITE, or; NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification describing Letters Patent N o. 129,076, dated lTuly 16, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Plow, invented by LEWIS B. WHITE, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia. l
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line c c, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is adetail longitudinal section of the plow-point 5 and Fig. 4, a sectional side view of the weederstock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new plow, which is provided with an adjustable share, moldboard, beam, and weeding attachment, in order to be adjustable to all kinds of soil and manner of preparing the same. The invention consists, `irst, in providing the share and mold-board with backWardly-projecting slotted ears, whereby they are secured to the standard, and, owing to the slots, adjustable thereon. The invention also consists in providing the mold-board with detachable extension pieces or wings; also in the use of reversible ,and up-and-down adjustable weeders, applied to a longitudinally-adjustable stock orholder; and linally, in making the beam adjustable on the standard and handle, or vice versa, to regulate the width of furrow and the inclination of the plow-share.
Ain the drawing represents the plow-beam, pivoted by a vertical bolt, a, to the cap b of the plow-standard B. The rear end of the beam A is by a pivot-bolt, d, connected with the step C' of shoe C, which is, by a bolt, c, fastened to the plow-handles D, betweenwhich a rearprojecting flange, a, of shoe G extends, the same being slotted to be vertically adjustable. By setting the shoeG up or down on the handle, the relative directions of the beam and bottom of the plow will be varied to regulate thereby the inclination of the plow-point and the depth of draft. The horizontal step C' of the shoe O is slotted to receive the bolt d, to enable the beam to swing on the pivot a, and the plow-share to be moved more or less obliquely during a straight draft. The plow-standard B is made iiat, as shown; also its base f, on which the brace g of the' standard and the handle D rest.
E is the plow-share or point, and F the moldboard. The share has a backwardly-projecting ear, h, slotted and fastened, by a bolt, t', to the standard, as shown in Fig. 3. The moldboard has also a baclrWardly-projecting ear, j, fastened by a bolt, 1, to the standard, as is indicated in Fig. 2. The ears h and 7' are both slotted to allow the convenient adjustment of the share and mold-board, or else the standard may be slotted for like purpose where the fastening-bolts pass through it. This mode of fastening the plow is morev practical and economical than the ordinary method of tting the bolts through the blades, exposing theirheads on the face. G G are Win gs, applied against the edges of the mold-board to extend it laterally. They are, by braces m, staples n, and pins O, fastened at the back of the mold-board, and have the edges contiguous to the mold-board -rabbeted, as shown, to insure a reliable connection. They can be replaced by other wings of different size when the width of the moldboard is kto be enlarged or reduced. H is the Weeder-stock, fitted over the base f .of the plow-standard, straddling the same, 'and fastened thereto. by a bolt, p. It is slotted7 to be back-and-forward adjustable, to t the position of the weeders to the width of the moldboard. I I are the weeder-blades, fastened to the wings r of the stock H by bolts s s. The
blades are lslotted' vertically, to be up-anddownI adjustable, and have their upper as well as their lower edges sharpened, so they can be reversed from one side of the stock to the other when worn on one side.
The wings of the weederlstock are or may be horizontally slotted to permit the lat-eral extension of the weeders.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The plow-share E and mold-board F, provided with the backwardly-projecting ears h j, respectively, and united by means of bolts i l to standard B, in the manner and for the purpose specied.
2. The sweep-stock H, litting over the base or shoe f, and adjustably secured thereto by means of bolt p, and having the win gs r r, in
combination with the detachable and reversiport for therear end of the plow-beam, which ble sweeps I, all us and for the purpose speciis adjustabiy secured to it by means of bolt; d,
fied. all as and for the purposes specified.
3. The shoe C, provided with horizontal LEWIS B. WHITE. step c' and rear-projecting plate n, the latter Witnesses: being clamped between the handles by means T. B. MOSHER,
of a bolt, e, and the former serving as a sup- W. A. GRAHAM.
