Description
D. TROXELL.
Improvement in Children's Carriages.
N0.129,072.' Patentedluly16,1872.

//d/Z fad/66%, ig/MK 55%}; f x I UNITED STATES DANIEL TROXELL, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDREN'S CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,072, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improveddents by the rolling' of the carriages down hill or into gutters during the momentary absence or inattention of the persons having them in charge. The invention consists in the use of spring pawls or arms, which bear against projecting ears of the wheel-hubs, and are by strings or rods connected with the handle, so
that when, together with the handle, such strings or rods are grasped, the said pawls or arms will be drawn up clear of the ears on the hubs, while, whenever the handle is released, the pawls or arms will by theirstrings be carried into the way of the ears on the hubs to prevent the rotation of the Wheels.
A in the drawing represents the carriagebody. B B are its'rearwheels, hung on an axle, (l. D is the handle of the carriage, fastened to backwardly-projecting arms a in the ordinary manner. On the hubs. b of the wheels B are formed projecting ears, pins, or protuberances d d, of suitable form, size, and number. They may be directly fastened in the hubs, or applied thereto by means of rings, or in other suitable manner, To the sills E E of the carriage-body, or to any other convenient part of the latter, are pivoted pawls, arms, or levers e e, which are so placed and of such eX- tent that they are, by means of springs ff, crowded against the hubs b in the way of the ears d, to serve as obstacles to the said ears, and prevent the rotation of the wheels. By means of strings g g orrods, or both, the pawls e are connected with the handle D, preferably in such manner that the said strings or rods cross each other directly under the handle, as shown in Fig. 1, so that they can be easily grasped whenever the handle is grasped. When they are-thus taken hold of by the person moving the carriage the strings or rods are drawn or moved in such manner as to draw the pawls 0 off the hubs b and clear of the ears d. Only when the strings or rods 9 are let go will the springs f resume their power over the pawls, and place them in the way of the ears d.
It is evident that the invention can be applied to but one wheel in place of two, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the carriage-handle D with the string or rod. g, spring-pawl e, and with the projection don the wheel-hub, substantially as herein shown and described.
DANIEL TROXELL.
