Be it known. that I, ELBERT .CnRoLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in theco'unty of Worcester and I connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The p resent invention relates to a clutch,
and means for frictionally connecting said membersat will. In the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawings,
and hereinafter described and claimed, my
invention is applied to a rotatable wire drawing block and serves -to connect the shell or winding surface of said block wi'th its driving mechanism. However, my invention is not limited to such a use, but 1s applicable to any and all uses wherein it is desired to transmit considerable A-power with the least possible shock to the mechanism in starting.

Referringto the. drawings. 1 denotes 'a driving shaft, suitably journaled in a fixed bearin 2,' and having secured to its lower end a ge tive movement, from a source of power, not

The hub 6 rotates with the shaft 1, and its rotation is adapted to be imparted to the Anormally stationary memberf4 and to the wire receiving surface .of vthe block by the mechanism about to be described. The member 4 has an' outer upstanding annular rim 10, -provided at 'its base with a flange 11 which is adapted for the support of ashell 12, the periphery of which forms the winding surface of the block. The shell 12 has an internal recess 13 formed in its side wall,'within which fits a projection 14,
on the rim 10 of the member 4, whereby said member and' shell are connected together to rotate in unison. The shell 12 projects upwardly'in surrounding relation to the member 4` and hub 6, and is provided with apreferably integral cover section'15, spaced f surrounded by a depending boss 16, through which loosely extends the upper reduced portion of the shaft 1. The spring acts to retain a projection 52 on the inner edge of said latch against the periphery .of the -plate 17 The said. periphery has a depression 53 within which, inthe stationary condition ofthe mechanism, shown in Fig. 3, the projection 52 lies, thereby holding the free end of said latch 45 inwardly, in the path of the shoulder 47. when said projection 52 rides upon the circular portion of the periphery of the plate.
In operation, with the parts in the positions shown in Figs. 2 and `3, the latch'45 holds the lever 41 in the full lineposition,
the flexible connection 40 extended beyond said shield to provide for the attaching of the wire thereto. When this is accomplished, the rotation of the mechanism is started by thewithdrawal of the posts 22 from the' support of plate 17, permitting the beveled face of the flange 20` of said plate to make frictional contact with the correspondingly beveled face on.the flange 21 of the rotating driving hub 6, under the pressure aof' spring 18. The'initial vrotation of the plate 17 in the direction of arrow A, Fig. 3, as a consequence of the supplemental frictional clutching action, above described, moves the end of latch 45 outwardly. This movement allows the'flexible connection 40 to be withdrawnA immediately within the rim 38 by the spring 43,- in case the the attendant, due to swinging of said connection by centrifugal force in the rotation of the block. During the movement of the plate 17 to effect the above described release of the 'lever 41 from the latch 45, the travel `bf the end of said arm 28 along the raised cam track 29 is not sufficient to cause any appreciable movement of said arm, owing to the substantially radial disposition of the inner portion of said track, indicated at 54, Figs. 3 and 4, which the free end of the arm during this time. Further rotation of said plate, however, brings the main section'of the cam track 29.against the end of said arm, with the result that the 'arm is forced outwardly, effecting the rocking of stud 27 to carry through an opening 46 j n held in, the shoulder 47 by a force of spring 43, with lto the wire drawing block, through themedium of band 35, which'is drawn tight upon the driving hub 6 by power furnished z by the machine. The power necessary to so tighten the band 35 is transmitted by vmeans of the supplemental friction produced betweenthe driving hub 6 and the plate 17; and by the arrangement of the cam track 29 and arm 28, they force which is thus transmitted by the friction clutch between the hub 6v and plate. 17 is greatly multiplied in order to insure the appllcation of ample force to tighten the band 35.
In other words, the plate 17 is caused to rotate through a'considerable are to effect a very small movement ofthe small end'. of said band, and it will be apparent that the multiplying effect, abovedescribed, may be varied at will by changing the contour of cam track 29 and the relative proportions of arms 28 and' 30.
During the drawing operation, the shaft 1,'mem'ber 4 and shel1 12 rotate in unison, with theend of arm 28 bearing' against cam track 29, in a position farther or nearer the inner end of said track as determined by the tension of the wire in opposition to the rotation of the shell. When the drawing operation. is completed, or when it isL -desired to stop the mechanism, the plate 17v is raised `by elevation of the ring 23, thereby eliminating the supplemental friction produced between the hub -6 and said plate. The operative connection between' the hub 6 and the shell 12 is thereby destroyed and the rotation of said shell comes to an end because the elastic band 35 becomes loosened l on said hub due to the resilience of the elastic band 35. The' plate 17 is drawnback into the position shown in Fig. 3, under the influence of the spring 50, causing .the end of arm 28 to assume its former position on the portion 54vof the track and effecting the inward movement of latch 45" to hold the lever 41 in itsfull lineposition, Fig. 2. In order to prevent too: great a recoil of the plate 17, a-raised lportion 55 is provided and is adapted to Contact with the arm 28 and to guide it into contact with theyportion 54 of trackl29, in readiness to move thereon when the clutchingmechanism is again rendered operative. The return of the plate 17 to the position-shown in Fig. 3 again causes the latch 45 to be interposed in the path of lever 41, whereby the latter is held in the full line position Fig. 2,-in-
