Patented Jari. v, 1919.
ApplicationfiledJanuary 1G, 1916. SerialNo.` 2,111,145.
To all whom 'it may concern Be lit. knownthat I, Sites WILLIAM Woon- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at` Roxboro, in the county loffAdams, State ofWashington, have invented anew and useful CurrentaWaterfWheel; and I do hereby declara the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersf skilled-r in the art to which it appertainstomake and use the same. l
This invention relates to an improved current water wheel', and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a power wheel of this kind adapted to be mounted upon a bed of a stream of wa'ter and having means whereby it may be belted to any suitable source for generating power for running small machinery.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind, which may be manufactured for a small costand sold at a reasonable profit, and which comprises improved features of construction.
One of the features of construction is the provision of a body member consisting` of two sections secured together and having bearings, in which the stems of the propeller blades are mounted, so that said blades may partially turn or rotate, whereby the blades may feather through the water on their return movements as the wheel rotates. An-
other feature of the invention is the provision of means for limiting the blades in their' feathering positions 'and in their positions when propelled by the water.
In practical `fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth sho-wn in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the imp-roved current water wheel constructed in accordance with the invention. y
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of F ig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of a portion of the body of the wheel, showing the mountingl of one of the propeller blades.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring more especially to the drawing, 1 designates a suitable supporting frame, which may rise upwardly from the bedfof a. stream of` water andmay be anchored inVany` suitablemannen 'llhe current water wheel comprises then body 2 consistingofQ twocircular sections onplates 3 and 4; The lower section 4 is provided with a downwardly extending shaft, which is axially.` concentric with the body of` the wheel: This. shaft comprises a largerA portion and: af reducedi portion 5 6. (whchi is mounted; lin; bearings 7 and r 8` of; the supporting framel) iandi an `intermediate shoule der 9 which engages the top of the frame 1. rfhis shoulder 91 together4 with `the collar 10 (which is secured by a pin 11 to the reduced portion) engaging the under face of the top of the frame 1 prevents axial movement of the shaft of the circular section 4 of said body. The upper circular section 3 of the body has an upwardly extending shaft 12 which is axially concentric with the body, and is designed to be of sufficient length to project above the surface of the water of the stream and may be mounted in a bearing (not shown). The upper end of the shaft 12 is provided with a suitable pully 13 to which a belt (not shown) may be connected for transmitting power to any suitable source for operating light machinery. By means of bolts 14 and nuts 15 the two circular sections 3 and 4 are secured together. The adjacent faces of the circular sections are provided with radially disposed semi-circular recesses 16 and 17, which, when the circular sections 3 and 4 are fastened together', as shown, form cylindrical bearings for the stems 18 of the propelled blade. The upper circular section of the body is provided with rectangular openings 19, which are elongated, and are arranged concentrically with the center of the body of said power wheel. The stems 18 of the propeller blades are provided with lateral. extending lugs 20. The upper face of the circular section 4 of the body is provided with rectangular recesses 21, which adjoin the semi-circular recesses 17, and are arranged concentrically with the center of the body of the wheel and in registration with the openings 19. When the blades are in operative position, whereby the water may propel the wheel, the lugs 20 are disposed perpendicular and are designed to abut the ends 22 of the ends 19, so as to hold the blades in such operative positions. When the propellers feather the water the lugs 20 resi3 l and engage the recesses 21,
thereby holding the blades in such feathered positions. The stems are provided With longitudinally 'bifurcated extensions 23, in which the blades 24 are secured by rivets or the like 2,5. The blades 24 upon their' opposite faces are provided with strips 26 and 27,'Which are secured by the rivets or the like 28, for reinforcing and strengthening said blades, whereby the blades may withstand the strain exerted by the Water.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new Aand useful isz- In a current Water wheel, a circular body consisting of a pair of circular disk sections, means for fastening the disk sections together,` the adjacent faces of the disk sections having radially disposed registering recesses semi-circular in cross section forming cylindrical bearings, the inner face of one of the disk sections having rectan- Y gular recesses adjoining the se1ni-circular radial recesses, the other circular disk sections having openings concentric with the center of the body and registering with the rectangular recesses of said inner face of the other disk section, propeller blades having stems rockable in the cylindrical bearings, said steins having lugs to engage certain ends of said rectangular openings and to engage said rectangular recesses to limit the blades in their operative and feathering positions.
In Witness whereof I have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SILAS WILLIAM VOODLAND.
